need help I.Ding an insect
Sorry for the shit quality.
I have never seen this bug before. It was about 3-4 inches long, and had wings similar to a dragonfly. I am in southern Ontario, Canada. Can anyone help? http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=1 http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=2 http://groups.msn.com/askaaska/shoeb...hoto&PhotoID=3 |
Here I'm asking myself why I ever clicked the link. Why why why!!? That is one of the most hideous bugs I've seen and at this moment I'm unsure of what kind that may be.
|
Looks like the furbious Snozwangler to me. Are you still alive, or has it burrowed into your brain yet? If not, be glad you're not an Umpa Lumpa.
|
Damn, I live in Southern Ontario, and have never seen a bug like that. Seen similiar ones like big Katydid's and stuff, but not that one.
/me goes to find out what that is. |
Hail Bug Hunter!
I had one of those crawl out of a wound once. I always wondered "which species was that?" I promptly ate it. I will now begin my research for you. I am done. -GH |
Hmm looks like some cross between a Katydid/locust and a Cicada. Weird looking mofo.
|
I live in upstate NY; looks like a Katydid or Cicada to me; we get 'em fairly often around here; ugly but harmless (raises hell with the windshield, though!)
|
wow, im glad i live in BC cause thats one of the most scaries looking bus ive ever seen.
|
I don't know. In my world this is a katydid...
http://www.photo-trio.co.nz/rsp/images/katydid.jpg and this is a cicada. http://www.ne.jp/asahi/julesandjames...ure/cicada.jpg What you've got is neither and looks to be quite nasty. ----- Edit: Found it! Dobsonfly http://collections.ic.gc.ca/biodiver...orydalidae.jpg Not as dangerous as they look, actually. Used as bait by fishermen. |
I was just about to say, I know them as hellgrammites... Which, thanks to your link platypus, I now know that name refers to the larvae. Interestingly, I see them every once in a great while and I'm in the mid-easteren united states... so apparently, they come down from canada now and then.
|
Whats pretty freaky is those bugs that come from continents away. Living in LA, we have a pretty diverse society down here but that also brings some pretty foreign bugs.
A few years ago jumping flying spiders weren't around and suddenly its like "attack of the super bugs" or something lol. |
Damn, that's a ugly bug!!
|
thats a scary looking bug. I live in southern ontario and aint ever seen a bug like that!
|
thanks guys! that been's bugging me for quite awhile!
|
disgusting.
|
Heh I remember doing bug collection projects for school and I still cringe at having to stick needles through huge bugs like a potato bug or something ugh
|
Whilst we are on the bug topic, I have been searching for about a week regarding one that I saw on my car.
I am in Southern Ontario as well. My wife and I were walking to the car when we saw this fly roughly 2 to 3 inches long. It looked similar to the cicada posted by platypus, but it was gloss black with clear wings. Nothing else. It was nearly invisible on my car as it is black as well. It looks to be in the horse fly family, but that's all I can find out. I really wish I had my camera on me.... I normally do, but the real estate lady we were with said no pictures allowed so I left it at home. Any thoughts? ---- Edit: After hitting the link Platypus posted, I had read there were indeed 9 types of cicada that are common in Canada.. I think it was one of those, though I am still looking at picks for more. It does look alot like this one: http://members.fortunecity.com/cicad...9/1e7c63f0.jpg It may be a Tibicen chloromera... whatever that is heh. |
oh my god that thing scared the crap outta me. . . just kill it, its to ugly to be flyin around. . . that thing would make me run out of my house or where ever i was even if i was driving just to get away from it. . . i freak out around bugs and thats a big scary bug
but thanx for waking me up alot |

Cheers |

I now officially hate the Dobsonfly |
I hate bugs lol.
|

Strong work, platypus!!
I suggest that you capture this insect and hide it in your sister's underwear drawer. |
Underwear drawer sounds like a great idea... I don't get it. I'm 18, used to love bugs at age 10ish, just recently realized how I detest bugs this summer while biking (ingesting gnats.. fun stuff).. All this bug talk reminds me of the time I was chased, along with two friends, by a giant horse fly back in scout summer camp..
Damn bugs. |
lol .... you guys crack me up! All bugs are ugly...
|
I dunno, I think he;s kinda cute :) ugly things need love too...

i think the bugs in my house are evolving
ive had these little black beetles for a while, and recently ive learned they can fly, and their exoskeletons are becoming more indestructable by the month |
My wife just had me call to have the house sprayed because there are a few spiders and the occasional cricket. The spiders are never more than 1 cm and the crickets can't be more that 2 or 3 cm. She would have called the fire department if she saw an insect that big anywhere near our home, especially one that flies!
|
I've seen that insect before, although I couldn't for the life of me remember where. Good catch on the Dobsonfly ID
|
That is one freaky ass bug...though I really hate horseflies more.
|
That is about the most revolting bug I have ever seen, and to have it crawling around your house. echhh
