Being cheap
 

Is it worth being cheap in every day life? For the past year or so I have been extremely cheap and havent spent much more then Ive had to (food, gas, bills, clothes, girlfriend etc...). Is it smarter to save everything you make and then spend a lot on somthing big such as a family vacation/car/boat or somthing to that extent.

Or are people happier in life spending money whenever they find somthing they want such as a faster computer (even though the one you already own is fine), more clothes then you actually need or electronics you could live without.

I think Im going to change my lifestyle and start spending more. I may as well buy stuff that I want while im still young and have some fun.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being cheap. Actually, I should probably be cheaper, I tend to overspend on small useless things :\

I think being cheap is a problem if it is an obsession that interferes with your ability to enjoy life (like if you deny yourself EVERYTHING you want), or if it's a practice for its own sake.

If you're being cheap to save for something else, or because you find it a fulfilling practice, then hell yeah - it's a better financial practice than conspicuous consumption or irresponsible deficit spending, in my book. A lot of stuff we waste money on doesn't make us happy the way we thought it would when we wanted it. Pinch those pennies!

I am very cheap, unless it comes to my computer or car. Then I go balls out. Probably why I don't have a girlfriend anymore. Oh well.

I wish I was more cheap, as I'd not have to worry about losing my job since I'd have plenty put away for such a rainy day.

if u are saveing for soemthing big then yea its ok. i dont spend lotsa money on stuff cause i dont have lotsa money. but when i have the money and its a good deal i go for it. spend wisely instead of cheaply

I manage to blow money on absolutely everything - it just disappears. I've got fuckloads of stuff to show for it, but strangely my identical twin brother is the exact opposite - tight as a duck's arse, and richer for it.

i'm not cheap, i'm not frugal. I'm conscious about how and where I spend my money. it has value to me because i work hard at getting it.

Have to go with lurkette here...being cheap and frugal are two very different things. Keep up with the frugality, as long as it doesn't detriment your long and short term happiness.

Don't be cheap just to be cheap; you should get some things that you want, but keep everything in balance.

Decide how much you want to save in a given year. Then decide in advance, what things you really want to buy. Space out your purchases so you can make your savings goal and still get the stuff you want.


This is a good approach because you still buy things for yourself, but you avoid impulse purchases. You only buy the things you really want, so you'll never get buyer's remorse, "Why did I do that?" Also, if you wait a while, you may decide you don't want the item after all. And if you still want it, you know you _really_ want it.

I'm pretty cheap, but then again, I don't make much money. I drive an extra five miles to get gas thats 10 cents/gallon cheaper. I used the internet to buy the parts for my cheap and assembled it myself, saving more than 300 bucks. I see nothing wrong with being cheap, if you're not hurting yourself.

I find myself arguing for the cheap, but possibly because I earn the money and my wife spends it. On stuff I don't always agree with. (Does anybody really NEED a $10 gorilla that dances and plays a recording of the macarena?)

im cheap when it comes to what i want and what my wife and kids need..

ill go with out .. but for a few things i need daily.. food or such..

ill save a bit to get something.. but tend up spending it on the family..

being cheap is fine. its those people who will whine five years over being fucked over due to losing a dollar.

i am cheap. my friends see me as cheap. funny though, when i go to buy the shit I want i get it... and they don't cuz they're broke.

now i'm not gonna ruin a month to save $10, either. its just this:

get your priorities in order. make mental/paper lists of everything you need then want then can do and when you can do it.:)

see, i get very $$$ cash. so its precious to me. i plan 'big buys' months in advance.

i will say this, though. on the gf side. if your cheap like 'let's go to the movie an hour early to save $4-10' then i thinks it's reasonable. eating at home too.
but if its like 'we will do nothing cuz it costs money' you will probably be single soon - and justly.

I was going to say basically the exact same thing.

I am kind of the opposite, but i have changed.

If i have the money, i will buy things for people or buy anything for myself.

I got to take something back that i purchased just out of nowhere a little while ago though. That was a nice 90 dollars back into my hands.

I do things like that though, which is horrible. I'll go out and see something that i figure someone will like, or i see something i like, and i buy it. It's really hard to save money when you are like this. I also used to work in a mall about a year ago. I used to buy the most usless things when i worked there.

Anyway, it's hard to save any money at all when you go out and just spend it.

I am saving a lot of money right now though. I have about 800 dollars saved for my business that i am starting. I just spent 300 of what i had saved on business stuff, so all i need to do is save 300 more and i will be ready to roll. I think it feels better to have saved a lot of money for something worth while that you are actually going to use and have fun with and something that will last in your memories or whatever for a long time.

I'm cheap but only because i'm poor.

Being frugal is usually a good thing but don't forget to enjoy life. You won't know when your time is up and it would be a shame to have spent all your time saving and then check out before you could enjoy it.

I hate cheap asses especially hippies. Moderation and buying what you need is key.

Delayed gratification.

Most people want it and they want it now. Save for it, then it is all the more a victory because you worked for a goal and attained it.

I used to never be cheap... as far as I know. But my wife has told me as of recently that not only am I cheap but I'm a cheap bastard.

I stepped back and took a look at myself and yes I am cheap. I don't even know how i got that way.

One day many years ago my goal was to have enough money to buy a bag of chips whenever I wanted and know I price check the mother fuckers for the best bargin.


But when I do spend now. I spend big. I hate cheap stuff.
