Can you surf from work?

Are you able (not necessarily allowed) to surf the Internet from work?

If you are, do your managers/supervisors/whatever mind, provided you get your work done, or is going online risky business?

Jesus Pimp 04-22-2003 07:51 AM

I do it every day I work. They don't care. When no one is around, I look at the titty board.

kreskin 04-22-2003 08:32 AM

Where I work, hell no. Not only do they block most sites like this, and where the titty board would link from, but they killed off the webproxies so I can't even go around the firewall. On top of they they monitor my web activity, so they know everything I try. Very annoying.

ARTelevision 04-22-2003 08:33 AM

everything I do on the Net is research.
that's always in my job description.

ratbastid 04-22-2003 08:35 AM

We're a web development company. I've always got at least one web browser window open.

We're pretty lax about what people can surf, provided they get their work done. It's never been an issue.

Met22 04-22-2003 08:36 AM

I surf, not necessarily what the firm wants me to do, but sometimes I need to find product information.

oane 04-22-2003 08:37 AM

Yes, but only normal sites for search, email, news, etc. I doubt thp would be allowed...

boatguy234 04-22-2003 08:52 AM

Go_AVS 04-22-2003 09:04 AM

I always have, don't really care or know if it is allowed but as long as I perform above expectations, why should anyone care.

gov135 04-22-2003 09:10 AM

Not at work, never. Have access, it would be stupid to come here using it. I check Yahoo! e-mail and CNN and the like though, but for maybe 15 min. a day.

More people have access and use it to come here than I would have thought, this is interesting.

greytone 04-22-2003 09:12 AM

Rarely I will check E-mail and occaisionally I will search other sites. When I do it is usually work related. The most common is the CDC travel health site. I would never come to the TFP at work.

Sticky 04-22-2003 09:26 AM

You all say that you don't surf at work. But if you are all online right now, when do you work?

sixate 04-22-2003 10:47 AM

Nope. I don't have a computer near me. Even if I did I doubt that I would. I never have understood how so many people had the time to surf at work unless it had something to do with their job. If I was a boss and my employees were surfing the net all day at work I'd fire them in a minute.

Cynthetiq 04-22-2003 10:56 AM

i got lots of time and lots of research to do all the time... i also have a TV, VCR, and stereo... I'd love to get a DVD player...hmmm.. maybe I'll bring in a DVD attachment for the laptop.

*Nikki* 04-22-2003 10:57 AM

There are brief moments when I can get online. However I don't come to the TFP. That is a trail I wouldn't want to leave at work!

splck 04-22-2003 11:14 AM

If I'm at home working, I'll check a few things but when I'm out in the field i'm lucky enough to get cell service let alone an internet connection. I'm glad my job has nothing to do with the web, surfing would seem like work while I'm supposed to be having fun.

440sixpack 04-22-2003 12:09 PM

Doing so right now. ;)

I'm kinda torn actually, I can't really use the Titty board at home cause my damn dialup connection is way to slow, but then I don't want a huge ton of porn flowing through the high speed connection at work either. It's all about moderation.

World's King 04-22-2003 12:18 PM

I was able to surf at work...

I worked at home. Now, I'm still home but it's not work anymore

ataylor20 04-22-2003 12:21 PM

My job depend 75% on having a break to look at porn every 15 mins or so.. IT rocks.. My boss is cool.. He doesnt mind at all.. but We are in a enclosed office and We are the IT directors :)

i8one2 04-22-2003 12:51 PM

Nope! no computer, just people wanting to chat and eat, wow I deal with real live people for 11 hours a day.

Atropos4 04-22-2003 01:28 PM

Can't where I work. Only the bosses have computers. Besides even if I did have access it wouldn't matter. I'd never have the time to use it.

onodrim 04-22-2003 04:27 PM

No computer where I work. Although if I had a laptop, that would be perfectly accpetable. Maybe I should invest in one :)

KillerYoda 04-22-2003 04:30 PM

The waves are way too narly heading to work, so no, dude.:D

merkerguitars 04-22-2003 04:58 PM

I do all the time cause 90% of the computer work i do is involving downloading stuff...windows updates..virus updates...etc.....so I really have nothing else to do....otherwise i would look really unproductive

Darklight Adept 04-22-2003 05:16 PM

I work IT Tech Support, so I have quite a bit of leeway. Still don't risk browsing NSFW, and I have to turn of avatars when I browse the tfp for obvious reasons ;)

SecretMethod70 04-22-2003 06:03 PM

I really depends how you look at it. When I'm working (mostly only in the summer) I have complete control over my schedule. This will change a bit this summer as I'm being promoted to an assistant manager in which case I'll have a bit more of a set schedule. That said, when not doing assistant manager type activities, I can take time off whenever I feel like it, so, in that case, yes, I can surf while at work. All I'd have to do is stop off at home and start surfing. BUT, if you consider it based only on whether or not I can surf while ON THE JOB, then no. When I'm actually working and doing things I get paid for, I'm either at someone's home whom I don't know very well or in a small office where there is only one computer and one e-mail station.

louiedog 04-22-2003 06:08 PM

I prepare old, donated computers for people in the community that can't afford them and get paid for it. I wouldn't be doing a very good job if I didn't test the networking and browser. :)

Zotz 04-22-2003 06:31 PM

I can surf but have to stick with the SFW sites. Big Brother keeps a close eye on things......

TheDave87 04-22-2003 07:03 PM

I work for an ISP... and i helped build the place from the ground up... i still need to be mostly good though, even though the boss and i are like brothers

phredgreen 04-22-2003 09:40 PM

i'm a little frustrated with this question. i have a computer with internet access at my desk and i do use that access on a very regular basis (finding shipping rates to charge customers, arranging freight pickups, so on and so forth...), but when my "supervisor" (not really a sup, but the guy who hired me and therefore is responsible for me) found me checking out a couple of things linked off of mefi, he suggested i make better use of my time. this aggrivates me. when i go into his office during his downtime he's surfing rush limbaugh's site. the service manager spends a great deal of time searching ebay for classic cars, and the shop foreman is constantly checking the airline sites for rates to his next dream destination. is this fair? i don't know. is this frustrating? incredibly. can i do any damn thing about it? nope. one of the many "perks" of being the new guy.

yournamehere 04-22-2003 09:41 PM

I can now - pretty soon I'll probably have to turn off avatars, though. I had to quit surfing at work right before TFP3.0 crashed - because of the "Anna / Britney Sex video" and Matt's Models ads that kept showing up. I understood, though. Business is business - it takes money to run this site. I certainly don't surf the Titty Board at work, though.

scapegoat 04-22-2003 10:28 PM

I can surf the net at work, but my company has this idotic firewall installed that wont let let me surf TFP dammit!

I can access just about everything else :p

krazykemist 04-22-2003 10:45 PM

I work for an Internet Company so yeah.
I can do pretty much what ever when not on the phone.
They've got a firewall setup to stop p2p programs and ICQ for some reason also. Doesnt really acoomplish much though. Plenty of alternate IM clients and we are able to get Kazaa Lite around the firewall. If thats not enough we just fire up the FTP client.
I usually surf an average of about 3-4 hours a night at work. About 1 hour on the phones and the rest of the time doing homework, watching a movie, playing some annoyingly addictive flash game or listening to music.

Baricua2782 04-22-2003 11:04 PM

as long as my agenda is met i can restrictedly surf the net.

alpha phi 04-23-2003 04:34 AM

we used to be able to surf the net at work, on breaks, at lunch but the company found out a couple of people were surfing away 6 out of 8 hours!
now explorer only surf's the company website.......borring

rekinom 04-23-2003 04:37 AM

Post removed.

troit 04-23-2003 04:56 AM

I'm not in IT but am at the top of the food chain -- so surfing is not an issue. I'm sure they know what I'm up to but I've got so much dirt on the IT guys it wipes my slate clean...;)

blkdmnd 04-23-2003 05:41 AM

I own the company so I do what I want. It mainly depends on how busy I am. Lately not too busy so I get a fair amount of time to surf and I usually stay here. My post count should actually be much higher with as much time as I spend here.

I have two employees. One sits at the front desk in a very visible position. That and the fact that her pc is an antique and crasehes all the time keeps her off line.

My other person has a semi-private office and gets to surf quite a bit. Sometimes it pisses me off but the nature of her job is that sometimes she just isn't very busy. She can surf wherever she wants just as long as she doesn't get busted for inappropriate material by one of my clients. Kind of a perk for her.

Hey, If you get the job done like your'e supposed to, then WTF?

G_Whiz 04-23-2003 05:47 AM

Yep, I surf at work. Basically my job requires a lot of research, so there is no problem if I surf to TFP. I do have be careful when the threads include posts from *Nikki* or Jadzia and I avoid the Titty Board when I'm at work.

I can't use mIRC at work, but they have no problem with me listening to radio on the internet. Go figure.

I think that's the bottom line - work comes first - then, if there's time, what's the harm?
