Been smoking for about a year now. My regular brand I smoke is Marlboro lights.
Why did I start? You get through the day a whole lot easier by smoking instead of just playing your brain with thoughts or trying to pretend your happy with your job. Whatever. Glad I started but will probably regret it down the line, but what the hell? You only live once. |

Been smoking for 20 yrs. Started at 13 my buddy and I thought we would be cooler if we smoked. Started with Camel filters snuck out of the house in the middle of the night and bought them from a cigarette machine in a back hallway at the Holiday Inn. Now I smoke a pack a day Marlboro Medium in a box, if they are in a soft pack I usually mash them so bad that I end up losing 2-5 per pack so box is the only way to go.
I quit nov. 5 2000 was sitting at Puter on Feb 23 2001 at around midnight and noticed that I had a freshly lit cigarrette in my hand I thought I had grabbed it from my wifes pack. I thought to myself " Hey stupid you quit smoking" I put it out and no sooner than my hand left the ashtray than I reached in my pocket and pulled out a new pack missing 3 and a new lighter. I figured right then that it is stronger than me for now, but one day I will beat it, I hope. |

Hey Smokers~
Thanks for responding. Hey Non-smokers...Thanks for being cool. I Remember picking up cigarettes for my mother at the corner ARCO(gasoline)station when I was 10 or 11. Two Quarters and a nickel would satisfy the machine enough to give me the pack of Salems that my mom required. I remember being VERY anti-smoking as a kid. begging my mom to quit and even drawing anti-smoking cartoons with political messages to get my point across. something happened though. at the age of 13 or 14 I began stealing smokes from my mom and step-father and saying"I'm going for a walk" Kent- golden lights.......100's After a while I began Marlboro(Mayberrys) (only) for the longest time..... *Addiction occurs when you accept a menthol after years of "non-menthol only"behavior ![]() Then Marlboro Light. (many years go by) Then Basic Lights T H E N and up to the present I started rolling my own(well, injecting my own would be a better description) I started rolling my own as an answer to the rising cost of killing myself. 1 cigarette machine($4.95)~ pays for itself carton of 200 filtered tubes--Premier($2.99) One can of Bali-Shag rolling tobacco($9.95) I like American Spirit tho Goodnight and God Bless

I tend to go nervous if I have not one spare pack of cigarettes with me (a closed one, not the one i'm currently smoking of). Usually, when I have only 2 spare packs, I go buy new ones. (for the moment I have 17 spare packs... But that's because I bought the ciggy's in Luxembourgh, they are € 1 cheaper there (bought 32 packs there, that trip saved me € 20 or so, with the gas for driving already counted off ) |

You buy the pipe tobacco; either crumbled up already, sliced, or a solid block (called a plug). The latter two types need to be crumbled up before going into the pipe. I've heard, when filling a pipe, that the first third is packed relatively loosely; pushed (tamped) down with the little finger; the second third more firmy (index finger) and the final third with the thumb. This is only a rough guide - in the end, it's about experimentation. Smoking: hold a match (long matches are preferable) just over the bowl and draw air through the pipe. The flame will be sucked down over the leaves and they will begin to ignite. When lit, you'll need to keep pulling air through the pipe to keep it lit. Expect to go through a few matches. If it's packed poorly, don't be afraid to repack and start again. The bowl of the pipe should be quite warm to the touch. Tobacco should be a little moist. Some smokers even put a small sliver of apple in their tobacco pouch if it's too dry. The more a pipe is used, the better it gets - if you find one you really like, stick with it. They used to have pipe smoking competitions. Competitors got ONE match to light their pipe. When their pipe went out, they lost. When finished, clear out the bowl. Use pipe cleaners to keep it clean, or you'll be sucking on nicotine. Don't worry, figuring all this shit out through trial and error is kinda fun. ![]() Last thing to know? - alt.smokers.pipes Anyone else, feel free to correct me. ![]() |

had smoked a few times on and off through highschool, only to try it out, never really enjoyed it.. come 19, started work in a restaurant to supplement my college tuition.. id say roughly 90% of the employees smoked, so i got started on marlboro reds.. never really had the problem some do with harsher cigs. went from that to try out other brands, smoked gauloises, gitanes, dunhill.. now i have the occasional pack of Nat Sherman Havana Ovals, nonfilter, and mostly subsist on American Spirit nonfiltered. really cant stand generic brands, the tobacco is too dried out, the taste is fairly horrible, and the "hit" doesnt seem to pack enough punch for my taste.
have tried quitting a few times now, had a fair amount of success.. oddly enough, liked the taste too much to continue with it. back on american spirits nonfiltered now ![]()

I've been smoking since sometime in highschool, not sure exactly but I seem to think it was my junior year. that makes it about 12-13 yrs ago. I have changed brands a few times. Used to smoke Winston Select a lot, but I've been smoking Camel Turkish Gold since they came out. I have tried the new Marlborro Blen 27 and they are quite nice as well.
Oh, and a Zippo is the only way to go as far as a lighter is concerned, none of that sulphur tase you get with matches and much more reliable than disposables. |

I've also taken to rolling my own, I find I spend about half the money I normally would, and I smoke a fair bit less than when I was buying packs, I guess because I have to 'work' at making smokes.
My lighter was a gift from some employees when I managed a production cell at JDS Uniphase. It's a silver Zippo with "CSN Death Squad" engraved on it, stemming from a joke I made about forcing everyone in our cell (named CSN), to get a 'Death Squad' tattoo. Apparently, the guy at the engraving booth was a big metalhead and was so excited that he got to engrave 'Death' on something that he carved a small design on the back of the lighter for free. It's one of the few things I own with a cool story behind it. |

Camel Lights here. I started in college, vowing that I would quit when I graduated. Fortunately, I dropped out, so I haven't technically broken my vow.
Bidis kick ass too. I've been wondering for a long time, are Bidis worse for you than cigarettes? I've heard they're worse, but I don't understand how they could be since they have so much less tobacco. Anybody know? |

I'm a pipe smoker. About once a month. I've got 5 pipes, and am always on the lookout for more. They are great collector items, and look very nice on display. And you always have the option of what kind of tobacco to smoke. It's an endless choice - the quest for the best pipe tobacco.

Tip for pipe smokers: just enjoy it. I used to get so frustrated at packing the pipe. It would go out, I'd relight, it'd go out again, etc. I thought, how the crap do you do this???!!! But, learn the 3-layer method like Macheath described and then just relax. If it goes out, relight. No problem. A pipe is supposed to be smoked slowly and enjoyed. Relighting and retamping is (usually) inevitable. I know this guy who's been smoking one for a long time. He packs his tobacco with his index finger WHILE HE SMOKES! Cool.
