Do you still read magazines? Do you subscribe to any? Which are your favorites and why?

I do. While more and more content from magazines is being moved online, and I don't read a lot of the magazines I used to, there are some magazines that I still enjoy. I am subscribed to Women's Health and Cooking Light at the moment. The latter was a gift I hope will be changed to a subscription to Cook's Illustrated, which I currently read every month at the library. My husband's paternal grandmother subscribes to Good Housekeeping and gives me all of the issues she's read since she saw me last every time we get together for a family dinner. I also have a stack of Better Homes and Gardens I got from her. Yes, I read and enjoy both.

I am still in love with magazines, despite the pages and pages of advertising. I like the glossy look and feel that they have. I like the monthly dose of advice and tips I receive from them, although sometimes I think I have more fun arguing with my issue of Women's Health as to why the particular scientific study they're writing about probably shouldn't be generalized to a larger population just yet. I admit, I have a great time pulling apart their science writing :lol: When it comes to Cook's Illlustrated, they do a great job of getting into the nitty gritty of baking method, reviewing kitchen equipment, and offering tips to help me in the kitchen. I love that. Good Housekeeping is full of more general information, but full of tips on everything from a cleaner house to better Christmas cookies to make-up.

A gift subscription to a magazine I'd laughed at, Southern Living, is likely responsible for my love for cooking. I still love to read them and my most coveted recipe comes from their pages (Hummingbird Cake).

Much as you've said, I love the glossy pages and pictorials. I often scan through my daughter's Seed magazine and can usually find at least one piece that pulls me in, although I'm not much of a science freak. I also love to scan decorating and art magazines for ideas.

Love getting magazines and they won't ever be replaced by online content.
The three I enjoy the most : Cooks Illustrated, Scientific American, Bicycle Quarterly. Oh and I forgot NatGeo.
Snowy check our cooks illustrated dot com as well. Very nice to have a searchable list of recipes to work from. I get the magazine and keep an online subscription for that reason.

time magazine - had the prescription forever...

dropped esquire, playboy, and sports illustrated within the past two years as they are pricing themselves out of the mag market...

i read voraciously but find that difficult to do online so i still frequent barnes and noble and the neighborhand book-sharing place...

Since starting school, I no longer subscribe to any magazines.
I'm thinking about subscribing to the American Journal of Nursing.
And I picked up a magazine named 'Real Simple' a couple of months ago on a whim and I enjoyed browsing through it. Covers a wide variety of topics.

When I left university (1992) my father gave me a subscription to "New Scientist" so I could look up the job ads to get work.

He's kept renewing it ever since, and I keep reading it.

I buy myself "Mojo" at the supermarket most months.

Time magazine is good medicine, Phil? ;-)

then it's my turn to enjoy.

Seed catalogs get me through the cold dark season.

I subscribe toStrategic Finance and CFO magazines as part of my job.

I randomly use the library to read other magazines related to personal finance, gardening, science & technology, computers, motorcycles, snowboarding, etc.

Men's Health and Runner's magazine. My brother in law thought I needed a subscription to Maxim, but it declined in quality a few years ago. I might unsubscribe to that one as soon as possible.

Magazines are great for flying: Harpers, Motor Trend Classic, Classic Motorsports. I also subscribe to Toronto Life, which is like Vanity Fair for Toronto.

As it happens, my wife gets Vanity Fair and other fashion magazines and I'll skim them at the dinner table.

When my Mother In-Law visits, she brings her stack of latest Economists and Atlantic Monthly's which I cherry pick through for articles that appeal to me.

This year for Christmas I subscribed another certain auto magazine for my brother who is a gearhead and lives far away.

I resent Mens lifestyle and fashion magazines because they're repetitive and don't really apply to me. In this issue: The latest in Bespoke Suites, luxury watches, Scotch and ab exercises!!

Menshealth. Good for keeping me in shape with workout and eating tips. It speaks to my ideal lifestyle.

Time Magazine. Over the years, it's been slanting a little left. However, the mostly centrist reporting and mostly good information outweighs the occasional annoying slants. (Or how the magazine has a tendency to report on AOL-TIME-Warner media releases--"see the latest movie!" -or- "Who needs Marriage? Men DO!")

GQ Magazine. Dropping it. It's a bunch of fluff and pie-in-the-sky crap. Overly expensive suits and poor writing.

I'm a pretty compulsive reader and, of course, magazines are included. I subscribe to Consumer Reports, together with their Money and Health newsletters. Kiplinger's, Money, Old House Journal, (for my 1920s house) Collectible Automobile, AAA Magazine comes with my AAA membership. The Strad (from England) and Strings (from California) are magazines for players of orchestra string instruments of the violin family, and people in the related trades. I play the bass pretty well, and the violin not so well. Besides magazines, I get the Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe, and the Sunday Wichita Eagle.
I like the feel of real paper pages, the same way that I like the feel of writing with a real lead pencil. I am bothered somewhat by the amount of newspaper that I end up putting out for recycling, especially since I usually don't get everything actually read.

Wired - the only magazine I subscribe to. Great as a travel companion. Easy to pick up and get lost in even one that is a few months old.

I started subscribing to National Geographic with paper route money, back in the dark ages. I still read it every month.
The Smithsonian is pretty reliably interesting.

I like the feel of a material thing, though I do get a lot of knowledge & entertainment these days by the means we're using now.

I subscribe to Maxim and Playboy and will probably drop Maxim due to too many male models in their ads. (shallow reason, but fuck 'em)

Ridding myself of magazines is part of my whole de-cluttering process. I love magazines, but I must resist. I have to resist, so I have let all my subscripions go. But I still buy the occasional copy, like the Rolling Stone issue with Adam Lambert on the cover. I know. It's just not me.

I will reach for a copy of Wired before any of the others. I do read Autoweek and Game Informer as soon as I get them. Mostly because it doesn't take long.
Had a subscription to USNWR for about 20 years. They were a weekly, but went to a monthly with weekly online content. Hardly ever read the online stuff and probably would have cancelled the subscription next time around.

I like Linux Format, but they're 16 dollars a pop.
I have every bsingle Thrasher and Trasnworld Skateboarding magazine from 89 to 99. ONce in a while I'll pick one up and get lost for an hour.
I generally like the advertising in magazines, short and quick read articles.
I don't have an ereader yet, but I like the idea of being able to subscribe to a magazine and inventory the articles you like. I think you can do that?

Wired, Outdoors, Scientific American, and the US Air and space mags are my favorites. My weakness is the People Magazine that I maybe buy once a month.

I enjoy having something tangible, and usually grab the magazines when I am flying to read while waiting on the planes and in the airports.

I don't read magazines as often as I used to but I still like to pick some up when I am travelling or inbetween books:

Wired (not as good as it once was but still some good stories)
Time Out Singapore (just like Time Out everywhere only with Singapore stuff - a lot like Toronto Life)
Time
Newsweek

I sometimes read "Negligent Mother Magazine".

Sometimes I look at a "Down Beat" at a friend's house.

I read National Geographic regularly. I had a subscription to Bicycling magazine which somehow never ran out, but I don't read that any more. I also had a free trial subscription for Rolling Stone which I let run out.

Count me in with the magazine lovers but with a shit ton of books to go through and a Google reader account which seems to aggregate over a thousand articles every three days, it's very rare that I'll commit and give a magazine the time it deserves so I have an ever-increasing stack of Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Tokion and Vogue magazines to go through. Vogue because they have some of the most beautifully shot adverts, Tokion since I'm a hipster and the first two primarily because art still doesn't read anywhere near as good on a glowing screen as it does printed on paper.

Dogzilla, I had that Rolling Stone free trial because of something I bought at best buy a few years ago and they sent me way too many issues. I didn't realize how many it was until I hauled them all off to my local library a few weeks ago but they must really be desperate for readers.

I have been on this free magazine subscription system for about 2 years now. If they were not free I would not get them. Back 20 years ago I used to go to the magazine rack once a week and buy about $20 worth of different magazines.

I still think magazines work better for me than just reading online, but I also read a lot online. Somebody already said it above, magazines feel more organic to me and are simpler since I can just pick it up in one second, read sitting up, laying down, upside down. I don't like "small" laptops and mine is way bigger than a magazine so it's more cumbersome and a magazine is less confining than sitting at a desk.

Nobody mentioned one of my favorite mags, Grassroots Motorsports. I also get Autoweek, Hot Rod, Road & Track, Hemmings Motor News, Sky & Telescope, Sports Illustrated, Scientific American, National Geographic, Mechanical Engineer from ASME. Wifey gets Vogue, Allure, Better Homes & Garden, House Beautiful, Entertainment, and TV Guide. I'm keeping all of mine indefinitely, but some of my wife's were to support school subscription drives and when they run out we'll drop them for a while.

Sometimes I really wish I had a subscription to National Geographic. I read it when I babysit one of my kiddos. He and I always sit together and look through the latest issue. I actually get to read a lot of magazines while babysitting, and it's introduced me to some ones I like but don't subscribe to, although I may pick up a copy and read it every now and again at the library, like Atlantic Monthly and the Economist.

I find it fascinating how many of us are still attached to magazines. I think there's something about having the material of a magazine in your hands that makes it appealing.

i dont read many magazines except for nerdly music mags (the wire) and "literary journals" because either i'm interested or thinking about sending in stuff or both. sometimes i think the only audiences for them are people who either were published there or are thinking about being published there. i like elimae, the collagist and metazen. used furniture review is new and cool and they've got one of my stories on the front page (see what i mean?)

i like design journals too. and typography-obsessed things.


i cruise around electronic babylon and read things mostly by way of citation trees. curious to think about how much reading habits have changed over the past few years.

I subscribe to Allure. I miss my Time subscription. I don't remember why I dropped it, I think it just expired and I didn't bother re-establishing service.

I enjoy getting magazines, it gives me a thrill to get something in the mail other than junk and bills.

Bicycling - is the only mag I buy. I do read a ton of magazines but I read them at the library. Free is the black.

I also get all my movies and books from the library. Does not take long to get new releases as I don't think many people think of the library for them.
Request online, get the email when there ready to be picked up. Auto check out in and out in 2 minutes. Love it.

I used to subscribe to PC Gamer, until kotaku and joystiq became my source for video game news.
Now I'll occasionally buy Time or Wired when I know I have plane or train ride.

forgot - i also get the bi-monthly DAV publication (free), golf magazine (free), golf digest (free), and the lamp, exxon/mobil's quarterly publication for stockholders...

My main three are The Smithsonian, National Geographic and The Atlantic monthly. Anything that looks good at friends' houses is also worth a quick perusal.

Seamaiden has a subscription for Watercolour Artist, which my parent's give her for christmas every year. We used to have a subscription for Paste, which was great cause every month it had a CD full of indie music which we wouldn't hear anywhere else, but we've let that one lapse. I had subscriptions for Web Designer & Photoshop Creative which come from the UK and are mondo expensive to subscribe to ($150 each), but I'm letting those go just cause I can't afford them on my downgraded lifestyle. I'll settle for perusing them at the local Chapters store and picking them up if they have an article that appeals to me, like i do with their sister publication Advanced Photoshop. I look at PC World at the library or download it from bittorrent and read it on my ereader.
