Boy, The Superfriends really sucked!
We have a Sunday afternoon tradition in my house: we clip kids' nails. For the last few years, that's meant that we go to Youtube and watch Cailou, snowplow trains or the Blue Angels. Since I think that Cailou sounds really whiney, I've been trying to find another cartoon to get the kids to watch while I try to shear off the little daggers at the ends of their fingers.
A couple of weeks ago I had the bright idea of trying some of the old Saturday morning cartoons, especially since both boys are really getting into superheros lately. The first one I thought of was The Superfriends, my absolute favorite at age 7. This is what I found: Warning: it's a piece of crap. My image of how great Saturday morning cartoons were has been completely shattered, and I kind of feel like I got duped for part of my childhood. Sort of like Ralphie in A Christmas Story: "It's a crummy commercial!" So how have you come face to face with a childhood mythos and how did you react? |
The Super friends got me too. I loved that show as a kid. Watching as an adult, it's a huge let down. It did make me curious though and I searched and re-watched everything I could find that I liked as a kid. Banana Splits, Hong Kong Fooey, Secret Squirrel, Land of the Lost, Speed Racer...............
Of the lot, Speed Racer was the biggest let down. I used to run home from the bus stop to watch Speed Racer, even wore Speed racer T-shirts in to my 20's. Speed and the Mach 5 were the best. As an adult, I was good for about 5 minutes of it and done. Land of the Lost is the only favorite that has retained it's entertainment value for me. I did however find the source of some strange beliefs I've had since youth, buried in the 'moral' of some of these shows. So psychologically, it was worth while. I was able to discard and bury some strange shit much easier after discovering the source. . . |
