First Muslim Mayor in Calgary and all of Canada?
Calgary, meet your new mayor | Calgary Votes | News | Calgary Sun
Calgary chooses Naheed Nenshi for mayor - Yahoo! Canada News I'm only posting this here based on the rise from little known to winner. I thought Calgary was too racist to elect anyone other than a white person, thats my honest opinion take it as is. I'm glad because Nenshi was the one candidate that spoke to a younger generation of voters, along with relaying values that appealed to an older generation. The other two candidates had faltering platforms, particularily Higgins, and McIver had a strong start and failed to carry any momentum. I personally think it was an race of momentum and who carried it till the end. I'm excited for this city and maybe someone with different views/values than the same old elected farts. |
This is interesting.
I share your thoughts in terms of Calgary seeming to be an unlikely place for this kind of first, but then you think about how rapidly the city has grown over the past decade or so. I'm pretty sure at least a quarter of the city is made up of visible minorities. |
a few weeks ago following the hotly contested federal elections, Australia also got its first muslim MP into parliament. Ed Husic is from bosnian heritage, and is described as a non practising muslim. However, every news article ive read refers to him as a muslim MP.
To be honest, i had no idea who he was until after the election and dont really care who is in his seat as long as they're serving their constituants. muslim or not it shouldnt really matter should it? |

This is where I diverge with separating the wheat from the chaff. I don't think that a gay muslim should representative of anything other than what the constituency wants.
As jove and dlish stated which I am in agreement with, is that it is important to note the actions of someone personally does not or should not affect their performance when it comes to how they vote on matters for their constituents. Unfortunately too many people rely on the visible touchstones that are available to them because that's what they can identify within themselves as connections. Good for Calgary in electing someone that they believe is better for them. |
