Nuff said.

I don't really hate Starbucks per se. I do hate burnt coffee. And Starbucks is the purveyor and popularizer of burnt coffee. Starbucks Envy is what has allowed burnt coffee trendiness to percolate (heh heh) its way into other venues. Yuck.

Um, the whole "over-roasting" complaint was dealt with quite a while ago now that you can walk into a Starbucks and say "mild."

If you want a properly roasted French or espresso roast, go to a proper cafe—preferably one that roasts its stuff on-site and knows what they're doing.

Regardless, enough with the "I don't go there because it's burnt." You have options...unless you're a dark roast connoisseur and none of the current dark roasts on Starbucks' roster is done "properly."

Many people simply don't like dark roast.

Uncle Phil hasn't been trendy since the days when it was stylish for a young man to hang an onion from his belt.

I think most coffeeshops are essentially the same when all one is looking for is a cup of coffee. Which is just another way of saying that most coffeeshop coffee is the same; when you use beans that don't come in a can and drip brew with the proper proportions, the quality of a cup of coffee is largely dependent on how old it is.

I simply don't go there because it's expensive. As for the hate ... ?? There are very few things I hate.

No, they don't suck less in Seattle. However, they do make a relatively consistent product regardless of location, so no matter where you are, you can find a cup of coffee. Personally, while I'm not a huge fan, I appreciate Starbucks; they are the one place in my parents' town in Bumfuck, WA where you can get a decent cup.

If anything, I think Starbucks sucks more in Seattle, mostly because there are so many other, better coffeeshops that just beat the pants off of them in terms of quality of product.

Oh, I rarely bother with the food. Overpriced junk food and yeah, airport food. And I have no argument against avoiding their size terms. Maybe it's relative that I don't mind the atmosphere. Jack Johnson is a massive improvement over the Eagles and U2, and I don't like Jack Johnson.

I did realize that I forgot Freshy's in West Seattle. They do a nice french press and a nicer iced latte, and their sandwich menu has been wonderful so far. Better seating. Even then, though, it's more a matter of free wifi, a desire for food, and location rather than coffee quality.

I like Zeitgeist down in Pioneer Square--that seems to be a neighborhood of Seattle I'm in a lot because of the train station  The other coffee place I really like--and they have multiple locations in Seattle--is Caffe Vita.

I wanted to hit up Zoka Coffee last time I was in Seattle but we didn't make it--too busy shopping for a wedding dress.

FoolThemAll 08-24-2010 09:12 AM

Thanks, I'll have to check those out.

And thanks for not saying Caffe Ladro.
