CBC News - British Columbia - Police shoving woman on video raises questions


I'm pissed off.

I supported the cops in Toronto 100% during the great G20 nightmare that descended on my fair town. I figured that if you were at the riot and got busted, you should not have been at the riot. All bets are off when idiots want to torch, destroy and injure.

Never the less, on the other side of the county you have 3 tough guy cops walking 3 abreast on a sidewalk in Vancouver. A lady (with cerebral palsy as it turns out) approaches the 3 of them and can't get around them because of the way they are walking. She tries to go around the one cop and he lashes out at her shoving her to the ground. The three of them then stand over her, then move on continuing down the sidewalk without even trying to help her out.

I watched this video 5 times.

I am amazed, disgusted, and appalled at what I saw.

This cop should be fired.

The other 2 should be reprimanded.

Yes. In fact, all three should be fired.

In before "POLICE STATE! POLICE STATE! SEE! SEE! THE GOVERNMENT IS KILLING BABIES! GESTAPO! NAZIS! BLARRRRGH!!!" hysteria.

Well, it just comes to show that douchebags come in all sizes, Canadian or otherwise.

Looks like she could have gone around them to her right; possibly. They were walking like that so they can (1) talk with each other, and (2) show off their power. What the cop did wasn't right and he should be suspended from his duties, but I wouldn't fire him.

I think this video proves that bumping into coppers is not a good idea.

You have to remember the woman in question has cerebral palsy. Not an easy hand to be dealt and she's trying her best, probably concentrating on just walking.

She comes up on the the cop as we all have come up to a person at one time or another and stops, but the cop advances one step (which to me seems intimidating) and by doing so, he closes the distance between them, then he just stands there and she tries to squeeze between the two imovable tough guys. The result was that he then reacted and pushed her over.

The thing that bothers me the most is that the cops are supposed to be there to help people like the woman in the video, but sometimes they fancy themselves "law givers" and they lose sight of what they're there for.

At the very least they need to take a long hard look at this cop in question and if there's anything on his psych profile which might indicate that he's a power whore or a sadist, he needs to go.

I'd fire all three of them. Police shouldn't act this way. I know the job is hard but you don't need to be a douche. Whatever happened to "serve and protect?"

We are blessed with having such information, the police did not.

I think these guys represent a small percentage of police who don't do what they're there for. Then again, this could be the first incident they've ever had and they could be outstanding gentlemen on any other day. I think this guy was looking for a target. He pushed her, talked some shit, and walked off. If he viewed the girl bumping into him as an accident (and assumed she was up to something), then he would have helped her up. Poor judgement on his part, hopefully he gets some type of punishment. Keep us updated, James T.

I think it's pretty disgusting how some people actually apologize for police actions like this. grow a set, would you?

Anyone who unjustifiably shoves someone to the ground while on the job should be fired.

Being a police officer makes it more so the case, considering their responsibility for protecting the public.

why just 'fired'? isn't that assault? that 'officer' committed a violent crime. The other two with him failed to arrest him for that crime.

My statement was referring to job status only.

Take the time to watch the video again. Watch ONLY the officer in question. It seems the officer had his attention drawn to his right. He looks there twice and is distracted by something. His attention returns to his personal space only when the woman comes in contact with him. At that point, her head is down and he can't see what the woman is looking at (his firearm?) or her "state" (a threat to his being disarmed?). So he shoves the person out of his personal space. Obviously, her disability made it impossible to keep her balance (although a perfectly able-bodied person may not have been able to maintain balance.)

In short, I don't think he tracked her all the way to his person and then shoved her - something that would be quite callous. I think he detected her in his personal space after some distraction and sort of reacted instinctively.

So, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on actually shoving her. Where I have a big problem is in the fact that he then had time to evaluate the woman (with back-up), take stock in the fact that she was not and had never been a threat - and then just walked off. That's where he gets fired in my book.
