Vote for me! (and an interesting business idea)
would you mind voting for me? Father’s Day Photo Entries | Lusso Baby Blog: Proudly Canadian (i'm the first pic btw)
You know, I've been really digging deep and learning about internet marketing as of late. Imagine if someone were to create an automated voting service based around a robot that would spoof and rotate IP addresses. I'm pretty sure your typical "vote" contest would never see it coming, and someone could win by a landslide. Of course until someone writes the code for one, I suppose I'll have to hold out my hat and beg for votes like a normal person huh? It's weird realizing that I've been on TFP since like the early 2000's during college (prolly even 1999 I think) and that I'm married and have kids at this point.

The issue with your business model is that it takes more than one packet to send in a vote, I should think. TCP relies on a two-way connection -- it's an inherent aspect of the protocol. If you spoof the IP you can't receive a syn/ack and can't even complete a TCP handshake. More probable vector would be the same sorts of botnets that are rented out to spammers. If it's that important to win you could probably convince such a person to do what you want, though it would involve a custom script (more expensive). I have no idea what it would cost or even who to talk to, though I could make some guesses on where to start looking.

You guys are awesome - thanks for the support. Funny, this is the place I asked for advice on getting engaged, and now it's the place I'm looking for votes for a father's day contest. How the world turns...
Thanks for entertaining the thought Martian. Well I was just thinking - if someone wanted to win a bunch of prizes, they could simply pay for a service that was less than the value of the prize and "purchase" it through that method. I've got some outsourced virtual assistants that I could get to vote for me all day I suppose, but I knew there had to be a better method. I had never even considered the botnets... that's a great idea.
