There are a few tell tale physical traits that link to the possibility also. I was thinking about sending a DNA sample to a lab and see what it says. Might be quicker than asking questions of the family.

We have a similar thing in my family--there's one branch of the family that was more or less chased out of Virginia sometime during Reconstruction, and no one in the family would ever talk about why, just saying that they were a "wild bunch." Like iliftrocks, I'd love to get a DNA test done, so I could finally know for certain. Right now the only evidence we have is a long history of kinky, poofy hair on that side of the family and my grandpa's admission that he wouldn't be surprised if that was in fact the case.

I guess to your point Strange Famous, my ethnicity is English Canadian, United Church upbringing, but definitely a child of the (sub)urban milieu of the Great Lakes area growing up in the 1960 - 70's. Culture as you saw it on TV basically.
Both parents were ethnically european white and protestant, however, they diverged in that my mother's family are Scottish while my Father's is German. May sound minor, but believe me it caused familial cataclysm when they got together. My Scottish & Canadian sided grandfather couldn't forgive my mother for taking up with a Hun. My German uncle on the other hand, never spoke to my father (his brother) until the '70's because he left Germany and married a woman from a country that had unresolved hostilities (he claims that Canada and Germany never signed a peace treaty).
