Passport question
So the Wife and I are going to Mexico in July! We already booked the trip.
My Wife's passport has her maiden name on it, we've only been married 6 months and didn't want to pay $110 bucks for a new one. I went to the clerk of courts to ask about how to handle the customs deal, and she said to book the trip with her married(legal)name and bring a copy of our marriage license to present along with her passport(maiden name). So we booked it accordingly but I'm just kinda worried that we may have problems with customs even though this is what the clerk told us. Does anyone here have any knowledge or input on passports?

This is one of the many reasons I didn't change my name. Sorry I don't have any helpful advice.

Our local office told the lady in line beside me that she had to get a new passport or risk not being able to get back into the country. That it would be easier to get into another country, but harder to get back.

The clerks office isn't really a great place for such information. I would call Customs and Immigration to make sure. They can pretty much give you the definitive answer.

Both times I married, I took my wife(s) away and both times they travelled on their maiden name passport, but brought the marriage certificate.
Don't forget to give the same name when you buy tickets that is on the passport she's going to use.

If you changed driver's licenses then you're going to have to change passports. Some people won't take a copy of the marriage certificate because well it's a copy and not legal identification. You're not going to have problems with customs since customs is the group that is making sure you aren't smuggling things in that aren't allowed. No, what's the problem is immigration services.

why would you book something that isnt in her passport/official travel documents? why does it matter is she's married or not?
if you book something that isnt in her passport, you may have a tough time getting on a plane where there are discrepanies in your documents. especially if you have a peculiar name. she-lish and I have been travelling for many years now and she's never changed her name and probably never will. we've never had a problem, so far. Like has been mentioned before, you wont have issues at customs because customs checks for contraband. Your issue is immigration. You need to speak to your immigration office in your local state.

When I got married, I sent my passport in and they amended it. It required a small fee and it took about 6 weeks. This was 10 years ago, though, so I'm not sure how things work now.

Well damn it, wish I had just come here before I booked the trip. My travel agent told me to ask the clerk of courts about passport questions. I'll check with the immigration office on monday as to what needs to be done. Thanks for all the comments!
