Jury duty travel reimbursement? when no buses are near

Yay jury duty... >< so apparently they don't reimburse for taxis or am I wrong? I'm like 5-10 miles away from a bus stop. Am I supposed to walk? Am I wrong? Is there some special clause? I live in Arizona.

Does that not seem messed up for people who live in rural areas without a car?

They pay us a whole $5 A DAY for jury duty in my county. They make you go for 3 days or 1 trial.

I wouldn't expect anything except having to bend over and take it.

Is it wrong that I deferred mine to a week when I know the local country court has a day off so their whole schedule is screwed up and I'll get dismissed?

I don't want to kick off an argument, but I just have a problem being a part of a justice system that allows for 12 people to issue a verdict only to have the defendant appeal and get off scott free. I love our way of life, but our justice system is horribly broken. [/soapbox]

Wow, and I thought the $18 I just got paid was stingy.

Zeraph, does your local court system have a webpage with FAQs? Here in Utah, the court will only reimburse for mileage over 50 miles one way, and will only excuse you due to extreme inconvenience.

None of this sounds anything like the rules around here. It's vest to give them a call and confirm everything if you're not sure

extreme inconvenience.... hmmm could get creative with that I suppose. Or... perhaps you could outsource jury duty? that would be one heck of a service!

I believe that all depends on what county you are in, and what court district you got called for. I got paid $28 for my 4 hours of sitting int the Maricopa County Superior court waiting room playing games on my cell phone waiting to not get picked...that should cover a 5 mile taxi. Incidently, how the heck do you survive in Arizona with no car? It isn't exactly public transportation friendly.

I have access to a car, jury duty is at 8am though and I share; I get the car nights.

I recently discovered that one of the grounds you can be deemed unacceptable for the jury in Britain is to have a history of depression or mental illness. I found this because a workmate who had a messy divorce 10 years ago was told not to bother to come when he confirmed on a questionnaire that he'd been on Prozac at the time.

It seems that under Health and Safety law, during the trial the court is your employer, and that they have a legal duty of care for your mental welfare, so are not allowed to stress you. Win!

That's awesome! I'd be willing to bet that upon being called for jury duty suddenly hundreds of thousands of people develop severe depression requiring a daily dose of Prozac!

As to the OP I'd check with my county court system and see how that works, you never know until you ask I suppose.
