Atlanta floods.
Nothing to see here - turn on the news if you want to get an idea of what's happening.
Normally, when people on my side of town see warnings for 'flash floods,' that only pertains to more rural areas. The city and suburb areas are safe from that stuff. Well, not today. Or yesterday. Or tomorrow. And maybe not the day after. It's nuts. People dying. People losing their homes. People stuck in their homes - My mother can't leave her subdivision. There's a van floating in about 6 ft. of water at the entrance. My father had to park and walk when he got home from work. She met him as close as she could get. We're getting insane sinkholes all over the place. One lady died on in her car while on the phone getting help. How f'ing morbid. Anyways, all you religious peep - prayers would be appreciated. Good vibes, mantras, etc. Anything positive, really. Carry on. |

I live in one of the hardest hit areas of my county (not to be confused with the hardest hit areas of the state) here are a few pics I grabbed of my city
This is at the end of my street. At 5 am yesterday morning this house was under 10 feet of water. 4 city policeman trying to rescue the woman that lives there had to be rescued along with her because of the violence of the rushing water This is a couple of streets over from my house This is two roads over from the house Again at the the end of my street And a few roads over [http://www.celticdesade.com/upload/flood08.jpg[/img] We are lucky our house sits on a hill, the yard flooded but it didnt make it into the basement. We still have many roads closed, cause they are, um, gone I found this, this morning, for the lovers of the ireverant this is pretty funny, specially the shamwow one lol http://www.atlflood.com

Wow Shani.
News just said 6 dead. Includes a 2 year old and a couple, whose car was washed away during a flash flood. Bodies were found outside of and nowhere near the car. Probably made it out of the car but weren't able to make safe ground fast enough. Last edited by wooÐs; 09-22-2009 at 05:27 AM.. |

I just got an email with pictures from a friend that I do a lot of business with down there. I don't have permission to post them so I won't, but they're of Alpharetta and look a whole lot like what Shani posted, including the color of the water.
Wow. Stay safe folks.

Anyways, that elementary school that's almost completely underwater. Blew me away. My Dad had to stay home from work today - still can't get out of the neighborhood. The ground caved in. There's so many other emergencies though that no one's started working on it yet. |

Yeah, I just thank my lucky stars, we've got two neighborhoods near me where everyone is trapped, I just can't imagine that...how long does it take to replace a road that completely washed away?

I really don't know. How about hundreds? lol
They just showed Powder Springs - they're apparently the hardest hit. An entire neighborhood of homes almost completely underwater. I just can't imagine. Losing all of my possessions. How horrible. When you leave, what do you do with your animals? I mean - no doubt take them with you, but not all hotels allow animals. And I'm sure the shelters aren't allowing them either. I dunno. I woke up with a cold already. Now I'm going to have to fight falling into a funk which will be difficult since it's all that's on tv. Ugh. We are lucky people Shani. |

I don't know anything about the area's geography. Is it a network of rivers that have overflowed their banks? One river? A lake?
I can't believe the depth in that suburb! The shots of the elementary school flooded to the roof is really sad.

Its several rivers and creeks in different places. If you read the news stories, 17 counties are being declared a disaster area. What was at the end of my road was a creek that is pretty much nothing on any given day..a few feet wide and not even a foot deep, it turned into something that put things up to 10 feet under water...what was a few roads over was a river, what was 1 county over was a different river and so on and so on. There isnt just one body of water responsible

Has there been a lot of rain for a while, or a huge excess in no time at all?

Last I saw, it was like 18-20 major creeks and rivers that overflowed. But where my parents live, there is no major creek or river and it's definitely not a flood-prone area. We got 20" of rain in about 7-8 days. Nothing could really be done.
Found a video with some shots of Kennesaw, Georgia - where my parents live. They're only 2.2 miles from me. This was the entrance to their subdivision. That's the floating van I was talking about. That ground is now all destroyed. There were other shots but this was the most 'exciting' imo lol. |

The majority of the rain came in about 2 days. It started raining last Tuesday, but between Saturday and Sunday we got about 15 inches +/- depending on the area, plus another 4 in my county yesterday

As an aside, the place that I do some consulting for seems to have taken inspiration from the "pointless announcements" thread. They both called and sent an email to inform employees that, had they been affected by the storms, they could: - Work from home if they had previous permission to work from home. - Use accrued personal or vacation leave days to miss work today. Gee, so they were allowing employees affected by the storm to do what they could do at any given day anyways? |

Mom's neighborhood - 'Winterthur' in Legacy Park - Kennesaw, GA
This is another neighborhood in Mom's neighborhood - the place is like a fucking commune. Anyways, straight ahead is a softball field that's completely underwater. As you hear the chick saying, the water's probably about 5 ft. deep. Had to be to cover the fencing around the field and all. |

A horse belonging to a cousin of a friend was washed away in the floods and they haven't found him yet. That makes me want to cry (and go hug my own horse).

Hi my fellow Georgians! I got trapped in my Condo, courtesy of the Chattahoochee. And then the power went. Yikes! I managed to hoof it to dry, lit land yesterday AM, and by last night we had power again. It was definitely unbelievable. The houses on Columns Drive in Cobb county - i think there are videos our there - (the big mansions) got water from the hooch on the front and the country club's lakes and what not on the back side. You could see markings on the mailboxes of how high the water was - 70 people on that street alone had to be rescued. Lots and lots of people got stuck on the road - I saw a 4 Runner with water up to almost the top of the windows - I'm not really big on lake or river water anyway - it's one of my most feared ways to die. I would have lost it, had I been in that car!
Sadly, a guy tried to wade through the water to get to his Dad's house at the bottom of our street, and he is now missing. No body found, but one can imagine. I'm still hoping he will turn up, but hope is beginning to fade. It's definitely going to cost a ton of $$ to clean up/rebuild everything that was damaged. No telling how long it might take. I think most people have power back on now - but there are some areas that they cannot safely get to yet, so it might be a few more days for some. Glad to see you all are safe! |

It's that Texas A&M education. Oddly enough, I dropped soil science (agronomy 301) and changed majors from bioenvironmental science to entomology. I hated soil science and I hated the instructor and TA even more. I couldn't tell the difference between a sandy loam and a loamy sand. That seriously was a requirement, to pick up a given sample and feel it and list what it was. I would have failed it so I bailed to something I had more interest in anyways. And yeah, that red dirt is a bitch to get out of clothes. LOL ---------- Post added at 01:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:04 PM ---------- Be proud
