Atlanta floods.

Nothing to see here - turn on the news if you want to get an idea of what's happening.

Normally, when people on my side of town see warnings for 'flash floods,' that only pertains to more rural areas. The city and suburb areas are safe from that stuff. Well, not today. Or yesterday. Or tomorrow. And maybe not the day after. It's nuts. People dying. People losing their homes. People stuck in their homes -

My mother can't leave her subdivision. There's a van floating in about 6 ft. of water at the entrance. My father had to park and walk when he got home from work. She met him as close as she could get.

We're getting insane sinkholes all over the place. One lady died on in her car while on the phone getting help. How f'ing morbid.

Anyways, all you religious peep - prayers would be appreciated. Good vibes, mantras, etc. Anything positive, really.

Carry on.
:o

uncle phil 09-21-2009 02:49 PM

friends of ours in alpharetta are being told to stand by for evacuation...and we're supposed to be stopping by in four weeks...

jewels 09-21-2009 02:51 PM

You've got it, girl. ;)

Grasshopper Green 09-21-2009 02:55 PM

I've looked at some pictures...crazy.

Stay safe, Atlanta area TFP!

dippin 09-21-2009 03:01 PM

the first floor apts. in my building were flooded, and several trees are down around my area.

blahblah454 09-21-2009 04:01 PM

Wow. Thats crazy! I don't have TV so this is the first I have heard of this. Natural disasters are always hard.

wooÐs 09-21-2009 06:16 PM

Hours ago the talk was that it was going to rain all night. Doesn't look that way now. So I'll guess we'll be drying up over the next few days.

I dunno. I just play reporter on forums.

Daniel_ 09-21-2009 10:08 PM

My thoughts certainly are with you guys in GA suffering flooding right now.

Happened where i live a couple of years ago, and it's scary.

Good luck all.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 02:45 AM

I live in one of the hardest hit areas of my county (not to be confused with the hardest hit areas of the state) here are a few pics I grabbed of my city

This is at the end of my street. At 5 am yesterday morning this house was under 10 feet of water. 4 city policeman trying to rescue the woman that lives there had to be rescued along with her because of the violence of the rushing water

http://www.celticdesade.com/upload/flood02.jpg

This is a couple of streets over from my house

http://www.celticdesade.com/upload/flood03.jpg

This is two roads over from the house

http://www.celticdesade.com/upload/flood06.jpg

Again at the the end of my street

And a few roads over
[http://www.celticdesade.com/upload/flood08.jpg[/img]

We are lucky our house sits on a hill, the yard flooded but it didnt make it into the basement. We still have many roads closed, cause they are, um, gone

I found this, this morning, for the lovers of the ireverant this is pretty funny, specially the shamwow one lol

Wow Shani.

News just said 6 dead. Includes a 2 year old and a couple, whose car was washed away during a flash flood. Bodies were found outside of and nowhere near the car. Probably made it out of the car but weren't able to make safe ground fast enough.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 05:27 AM

Its up to 8 dead now.

Have you seen the pictures of Six Flags?

The_Jazz 09-22-2009 05:30 AM

I just got an email with pictures from a friend that I do a lot of business with down there. I don't have permission to post them so I won't, but they're of Alpharetta and look a whole lot like what Shani posted, including the color of the water.

Wow. Stay safe folks.

No - I'll have to look them up. How about that elementary school................holy shit................ looking at Six Flags now....unbelievable.

Anyways, that elementary school that's almost completely underwater. Blew me away.

My Dad had to stay home from work today - still can't get out of the neighborhood. The ground caved in. There's so many other emergencies though that no one's started working on it yet.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 05:53 AM

Yeah, I just thank my lucky stars, we've got two neighborhoods near me where everyone is trapped, I just can't imagine that...how long does it take to replace a road that completely washed away?

wooÐs 09-22-2009 06:04 AM

I really don't know. How about hundreds? lol

They just showed Powder Springs - they're apparently the hardest hit. An entire neighborhood of homes almost completely underwater. I just can't imagine. Losing all of my possessions. How horrible. When you leave, what do you do with your animals? I mean - no doubt take them with you, but not all hotels allow animals. And I'm sure the shelters aren't allowing them either.

I dunno. I woke up with a cold already. Now I'm going to have to fight falling into a funk which will be difficult since it's all that's on tv. Ugh. We are lucky people Shani.

SSJTWIZTA 09-22-2009 07:23 AM

so, last tear atlanta is as dry as a sun bleached bone, and this year you can swim down the streets.

lovely.

fresnelly 09-22-2009 08:52 AM

Could someone post a link to a legit site with good quality photos? The results of my google searching seem to be plagued by religious nuts and phishing sites.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 09:13 AM

go here

Atlanta Area and North Georgia Local News, Weather, Traffic, Sports and Entertainment - WSB-TV

right now there are 12 sets of photos (a bout 100 photos each) in the flooding slide show

Daniel_ 09-22-2009 09:42 AM

Hope you're all OK. keep safe.

wooÐs 09-22-2009 10:21 AM

National and Local Weather Forecast, Hurricane, Radar and Report has some good footage as well on their front page.

fresnelly 09-22-2009 10:26 AM

I don't know anything about the area's geography. Is it a network of rivers that have overflowed their banks? One river? A lake?

I can't believe the depth in that suburb! The shots of the elementary school flooded to the roof is really sad.

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 10:30 AM

Its several rivers and creeks in different places. If you read the news stories, 17 counties are being declared a disaster area. What was at the end of my road was a creek that is pretty much nothing on any given day..a few feet wide and not even a foot deep, it turned into something that put things up to 10 feet under water...what was a few roads over was a river, what was 1 county over was a different river and so on and so on. There isnt just one body of water responsible

Daniel_ 09-22-2009 11:00 AM

Has there been a lot of rain for a while, or a huge excess in no time at all?

wooÐs 09-22-2009 11:05 AM

Last I saw, it was like 18-20 major creeks and rivers that overflowed. But where my parents live, there is no major creek or river and it's definitely not a flood-prone area. We got 20" of rain in about 7-8 days. Nothing could really be done.

Found a video with some shots of Kennesaw, Georgia - where my parents live. They're only 2.2 miles from me. This was the entrance to their subdivision. That's the floating van I was talking about. That ground is now all destroyed.

There were other shots but this was the most 'exciting' imo lol.

http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/1295/floatingvan.jpg

ShaniFaye 09-22-2009 11:13 AM

The majority of the rain came in about 2 days. It started raining last Tuesday, but between Saturday and Sunday we got about 15 inches +/- depending on the area, plus another 4 in my county yesterday

Its been raining for a while, but the real problem was that it really rained a lot on sunday night/monday morning. Some areas reported over 18 inches of rain. Just for the sake of comparison, the annual average for Atlanta is 50 inches.

As an aside, the place that I do some consulting for seems to have taken inspiration from the "pointless announcements" thread. They both called and sent an email to inform employees that, had they been affected by the storms, they could:
- Work from home if they had previous permission to work from home.
- Use accrued personal or vacation leave days to miss work today.

Gee, so they were allowing employees affected by the storm to do what they could do at any given day anyways?

wooÐs 09-23-2009 08:08 AM

Mom's neighborhood - 'Winterthur' in Legacy Park - Kennesaw, GA

This is another neighborhood in Mom's neighborhood - the place is like a fucking commune. Anyways, straight ahead is a softball field that's completely underwater. As you hear the chick saying, the water's probably about 5 ft. deep. Had to be to cover the fencing around the field and all.

PonyPotato 09-23-2009 08:19 AM

A horse belonging to a cousin of a friend was washed away in the floods and they haven't found him yet. That makes me want to cry (and go hug my own horse).

snowy 09-23-2009 08:28 AM

Hope it dries out quickly for you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

wooÐs 09-23-2009 08:30 AM

This is in front of my bf / friend / whatever the hell you wanna call him's neighborhood.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2...terandkent.jpg

And pp - Yeah they talked a lot about rescuing horses and such on the news.
Snowy - ty. It's drying up - that's for sure. But it's now that everyone's footage is being posted everywhere.

Vigilante 09-23-2009 10:11 AM

Wow that's crazy! First I've heard of it, too. So much sand, so easy to wash away.

redsneaker 09-23-2009 10:28 AM

Hi my fellow Georgians! I got trapped in my Condo, courtesy of the Chattahoochee. And then the power went. Yikes! I managed to hoof it to dry, lit land yesterday AM, and by last night we had power again. It was definitely unbelievable. The houses on Columns Drive in Cobb county - i think there are videos our there - (the big mansions) got water from the hooch on the front and the country club's lakes and what not on the back side. You could see markings on the mailboxes of how high the water was - 70 people on that street alone had to be rescued. Lots and lots of people got stuck on the road - I saw a 4 Runner with water up to almost the top of the windows - I'm not really big on lake or river water anyway - it's one of my most feared ways to die. I would have lost it, had I been in that car!

Sadly, a guy tried to wade through the water to get to his Dad's house at the bottom of our street, and he is now missing. No body found, but one can imagine. I'm still hoping he will turn up, but hope is beginning to fade.

It's definitely going to cost a ton of $$ to clean up/rebuild everything that was damaged. No telling how long it might take. I think most people have power back on now - but there are some areas that they cannot safely get to yet, so it might be a few more days for some.

Glad to see you all are safe!

Actually here in the south, we have what's called 'red clay' for dirt. Nothing like sand at all. And I don't think it's quick to wash away or what not - never heard that before. I dunno.

Hello neighbor :)

Columns isn't too terribly far from me. I'm also in Cobb (Acworth / Kennesaw area.) And I learned about the missing guy yesterday from the news. Very sad.

Glad you're safe too. This'll deffo go down in history.

I know, I have lots of family that way (I'm in TX). I used sand as a general term because you do have some, but you're right, most is clay. Clay is very easy to erode, and especially the sandy clay you guys have. The stuff we have in coastal TX is "gumbo", which is a mish-mash of crap and not the same. It's more like concrete than mud sometimes. But that's why that road in that pic is utterly decimated with one flood, the soil is a weak surface to build on (and why the river runs red and thick like a milkshake). I know the red dirt and kudzu quite well, and I see both in these pics. I wouldn't be surprised if the bedrock was sandstone, but I honestly don't know.

I hope you guys recover fast. Winter's coming and you'll definitely have some rebuilding to do. Hope all your folks made it out OK too.

i hope all is well with our atlanta crew.

LOL why thank you :)

It's that Texas A&M education.

Oddly enough, I dropped soil science (agronomy 301) and changed majors from bioenvironmental science to entomology. I hated soil science and I hated the instructor and TA even more. I couldn't tell the difference between a sandy loam and a loamy sand. That seriously was a requirement, to pick up a given sample and feel it and list what it was. I would have failed it so I bailed to something I had more interest in anyways.

And yeah, that red dirt is a bitch to get out of clothes. LOL
