Stormy weather
well, we had some active, or wild weather in the southern Ontario region last evening. Several tornados were spawned, and one death (sadly a teenaged boy in a camp ground). We've seen our share of active storms this summer, but last night's was turned up a notch. Best picture I've seen so far is this one from the Vancouver Sun of the front moving over Toronto:

In June I was leaving a grocery store here in town when I looked to the south. I saw a sheer wall of dark cloud moving north across the Valley. The forecast had said there would be a chance of thunderstorms, but they say that a lot without thunderstorms ever happening out here. Needless to say, I hurried home and battened down the hatches. Good thing I did too, because when the storm hit, it hit HARD. I've been through my fair share of gnarly winter wind storms, but this storm was a very different beast. The thunder and lightning were awesome. The rain poured, the storm sewers backed up, and the streets flooded. The ground could not absorb the rain fast enough; my basement had some minor water issues as a result. What worried me most is that both my SO and roommate were getting out of class in the middle of the storm. My roommate took shelter in a bar and my SO braved the weather to get home because the storm raged for a good hour; he was completely soaked to the skin.
I wish I could find the video, but one of the strange side effects of the storm was that as it moved in, it stirred up all of the dust and pollen. One of the weathercams of a news station in Portland captured an enormous cloud of dust being blown up from the city just before the storm hit. People had respiratory issues for weeks after the storm; it really sucked. I love a good storm, but that one was nuts!

You know the end of the world is near when Toronto, being the center of the universe it is, starts having tornados. Easy now,..that one's for Charlatan,..he is probably half expecting it anyways.
But seriously, that big cloud is really the smoke from the Leafs blowing up at the ACC before the hockey season starts. |

![]() I think we'll keep Burkie for a while, try him out. As for Heatly? talk about a storm.. He sure can put the tempest in a teacup can't he? After Ottawa saved him from a bad situation in Atlanta, now he wants to scupper the deal? What about Team Canada? Is he going to smarten up and buckle down?

I love storms, they are so exhilarating.
When I lived in SLC for a couple years, I saw the most amazing thing. In 1999 a tornado materialized downtown, and went up the hill on the side of the state capitol building. I lived behind it on the other side. I was waiting for my mom, who was visiting from out of town, to come by. We were supposed to go on a picnic in Memory Grove, in the ravine on the other side of the capitol. She was late, so I went outside to see very dark clouds. As soon as she showed up there was a lot of lightning and thunder all around and things were floating in the air, I had never seen that before. The wind was blowing like crazy and it was very loud. I looked to my right and saw a cloud swirl and descend, I knew it was a tornado. My mom yelled at me to get into the basement, but I walked further outside to see this amazing thing. We later found out the tornado went though Memory Grove, right were we should have been if my mom had not been late. It was only an F2, but it ripped up quite a few trees, and did some damage downtown.
