Aung San Suu Kyi - imprisoned again

In a way, this was expected. Even if it hadn't been for this latest situation, the military would have found a way of keeping Suu Kyi imprisoned when her latest year's extension on her house arrest expired in May. They couldn’t have her being free when the elections are coming around, that will, in their eyes, possibly legitimize their position.

Even so, I find it disappointing. I remember first hearing about Suu Kyi as a young girl and admiring her tenacity and her will to make a change in her country, despite being a privileged woman with the option to walk away from it, due to her marriage to an English man. She was, in a way, a role model to me. I have watched the development of her situation for years. She has been released previous times, only to be arrested again. I fear she will be imprisoned for the remainder of her life.

Here is the full story:

Burmese history is quite tortuous and its people have not had peace or freedom for over a century. Here is a brief history:

I do wonder (though not naively) what compels the international community to intervene in some cases and not in others. Sure, there are UN sanctions in place here. But actual physical, local intervention seems to be reserved only for specific cases. What is the difference between what was going on in Iraq, and what goes on in Burma? I’m not advocating this kind of intervention, but I do think something more should be done.

I have a friend who went on holiday there last year. She told me about some of the shocking things she saw. About how the Burmese people she met were truly afraid to talk to her straight about anything regarding the country’s policies or politicians. She said the people were clearly under great duress.

Anyway, I’m not sure this is discussion material, but I thought it was important enough to say something about.

Next year’s elections in Burma will surely be of major importance to the country.

To be our soul and gesture it abroad,
Our hearts are incommunicable still.
In what we show ourselves we are ignored.
The abyss from soul to soul cannot be bridged
By any skill of thought or trick of seeming.
Unto our very selves we are abridged
When we would utter to our thought our being.
We are our dreams of ourselves, souls by gleams,
And each to each other dreams of others' dreams.

What people tend to overlook with Suu Kyi is that she's the daughter of Aung San, who in turn did negotiate with the British about the future of Burma after WWII and was promptly murdered. It's not just the fact she has a Nobel peace prize - it's a legacy thing, too.
