I like Jack Daniels too. A lot. Any night that starts off with a big bottle of Jack is gonna be a good one, followed by a less-than-good morning.

Also, El Jimador tequila is amazing.

levite 07-26-2009 12:10 AM

God, I forgot about mead!

If any of you have the chance, mead is easy to make at home-- you just need a lot of honey, water, and some champagne yeast (available at a winemakers shop, or online from many places-- not expensive), and a big sealed container. Nothing beats homemade mead: it's sweet, but not unpleasantly so, light, but not too light to be a good drink, and it will go well with anything.

Sometimes you can find bottled mead at specialty stores or Whole Foods, even. But it's a pretty pale reflection of the real thing.

Great stuff, mead. I love it.

CinnamonGirl 07-26-2009 12:20 AM

mmmmmm....mead. Just one more month (well, and a few days) til Renn Fest! :D

little_tippler 07-26-2009 03:21 AM

I have a lot of favourites.

In my teens I used to love Smirnoff Mule - then they stopped selling it here in most places. But I order a vodka and ginger ale with a slice of lime and it tastes pretty similar!

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...4_smirmule.jpg

I like how it's mild and I love that it comes in a bottle you can carry with you on the dance floor, as opposed to a full tall glass that spills everywhere if you do that.

These days I often order a strawberry margarita, since I got braces, no fizzy drinks are advised! These are very more-ish.

http://www.mixshakeandpour.com/image...aritaClose.jpg

I also love the staple drink for summer, at least out here - Caipirinha!

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yxbH5iHFbV...aipirinha1.jpg

I also love straight whisky, any one of these is heaven. Straight up, no ice. I also approve of Balvenie Single Malt, that I've seen in this thread already. That is lovely.

http://www.beveragewarehouse.com/ima...ducts/6086.gif

Some good port is also a favoured drink for me.

Finally, for shots, I like something a bartender once made me and which I always order now. It's a great shot because it's mildly sweet, spiced, and goes down smoothly. It's a mix of triple sec, cinnamon, and a little lime juice. Heaven!

I drink Canadian Club and Squirt whenever possible. It's a great-tasting drink no matter how strong you make it. I also enjoy making my own spin on a Manhattan. I mix Canadian Club and Sweet Vermouth 1:1 with a large splash of grenadine and 3 cherries. The whole thing over ice. This drink is a sipper so take your time. The prize is at the bottom of the glass... if you know what I mean. Beer it cool too. I usually drink MGD or Miller Lite, but I have been known to sneak an occasional 6er or Smithwick's or Sam Adams.

I told myself to never touch Wild Turkey ever again-I puked all night the last time I drank some.

Telluride 07-26-2009 02:04 PM

Favorite drink: margaritas.

Least favorite: Guinness. That shit is nasty.

Cranberry and Vodka with lime.

AKA a Cape Codder.

Can't go wrong with that.

Punk.of.Ages 07-26-2009 02:49 PM

I'm not too picky, but if I have my choice:

http://www.bartonbrands.com/canhost/largeprodshot.jpg

I like my Canadian Host either straight or half and half with cola.

http://badservo.com/external_links/2007gift/sj.jpg

Sailor Jerry with cola.

http://images.send.com/103365_big.jpg

I love me a 7'n'7.

I still owe somebody a night of 77 7'n'7s...

http://dirtytrix.com/GuinnessBeer.jpg

My two favorite beers.

The only things I absolutely will not drink is Jagermeister and Tequila.

I like to marinade steaks in tequila though.

Coastey 07-26-2009 04:14 PM

Tangueray and tonic has accompanied me through many a cocktail party. As long as you act halfway sober, no one usually knows how many you've had.

CinnamonGirl 07-26-2009 06:45 PM

How can your two favorite beers be PBR and Guinness?

Punk.of.Ages 07-26-2009 06:49 PM

PBR's cheap and tasty. Guinness is thick and yummy, but a bit pricey.

It really depends on how much money I have and what kind of beer I feel like drinking...

squeeeb 07-26-2009 06:51 PM

other than wine...

B-52's are the SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know they are supposed to be a shot, but i mix them up in a pint glass. is that wrong?

CinnamonGirl 07-26-2009 06:52 PM

Ah. That makes sense. Just sounded odd...very different ends of the spectrum, there. I have to admit, though, if you're gonna go cheap, it might as well be PBR.

roachboy 07-26-2009 07:13 PM

depends on the situation and time of year. except in summer, i am also a big fan of single malts. islays in particular. some of them have been featured in lovely images above.

red wines from burgundy. malbecs when they're like red wines from burgundy.

beer:
my staple beverage here is ipswich ale and cape ann brewery's navigator.
when i can find them on tap, though, my favorites are trappist ales.
and la duchesse de bourgogne.
and st bernadus abt 12
and la chouffe
all belgians.
o yeah, and red stripe. summer beer. totally seasonal. yes yes.

a perfect makers mark manhattan is a fine fine thing (bitter as opposed to sweet vermouth.)
and a well-made martini.
and sometimes a bombay and perrier.

but these not so often any more.

o and la veuve cliquot champagne. yum.

Sailor Jerry is the SHIT. When I hit my limit with Captain I'll go on a Sailor Jerry kick. Nobody but me like it.

Punk.of.Ages 07-26-2009 07:16 PM

Fuck the captain...

Sailor Jerry is the same price and 11% more alcohol. Plus, it tastes better.

MSD 07-27-2009 10:26 AM

What don't I like?
Vodka. People who who say it has no taste have no taste buds. Cheap vodka tastes like rubbing alcohol, and expensive vodka tastes like rubbing alcohol with less aftertaste. Flavored stuff like Smirnoff grape and watermelon are tolerable, though.

Peppermint schnapps. I hate peppermint. I once had a Screaming Nazi (Jager and Rumple Minze) on the house, which for some reason was in a pint glass instead of a shot or tumbler. I took an hour, but I finished the fucker.

Beer:

Just to keep around or for cheap stuff:
Coors light. Refreshing served near freezing, not many calories, not enough alcohol to get me anywhere near drunk unless I shotgun 8 of them in a row on an empty stomach, but I can't drink milk, I don't like most soda, and tap water tastes like dirt. It's not so much beer as water plus.

Schaefer. $6/12? Yes, please.

Gennesee Cream ale at $15/30.

Fosters at $2/can, Their Premium Ale isn't bad, either.

When I want a buzz cheap:
Steel reserve. A 24oz can is like drinking 4 Coors Lights at once, tastes tolerable, and has 8.1% abv.
This past week, I discovered Joose brand energy drinks, which are 9.0% or 9.9% abv

When I want a few of something that tastes good:
Magic Hat varieties, especially #9, pretty much any Sam Adams, Bass, Newcastle, Guinness, Molson Canadian, Brooklyn Lager, Saranac varieties, probably more I'm forgetting now.

When I have some money to spend:
Rogue Dead Guy Ale is probably my favorite beer ever. Seriously, try it. Rogue Shakespeare Stout and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout are great stouts for people who like Guinness and want to expand their taste. Whatever Dogfish Head is making during any given season, plus 60 minute and 90 minute IPAs. Chimay Grand Reserve. Sam Adams Imperials. Innis & Gunn.

I'll try pretty much anything on the wall of singles and 4 packs at least once if I have some cash to spend.

Wine: Red, please. Cabernets are good enough this year that even a $8 1.5L bottle is good. I love me some cabernet sauvignon.

Liquor:
Long Island Iced Tea is my drink of choice. Especially at the local bars where they know me and use the good stuff.

Tequila. Straight tequila or tequila sunrises, and pretty much anything with tequila in it.
Manhattans. Need I say more?

Rum and diet (gets you drunker than rum and Coke but doesn't last as long.) The important variety is Sailor Jerry's and Cherry Coke Zero.

Jager and Jager bombs

Whiskey. Ilike whiskey. I also have a bit of a story to tell you.

Anyone try Evan Williams Tennessee Bourbon? Yeah, it's that stuff a shelf or two down from Jack, in a nearly identical square bottle with a black label. You've probably noticed it and thought of it as a knockoff of Jack, but you're wrong. Jack Daniels is the knockoff. Evan Williams brewery was founded in 1783 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Their product was packaged pretty much as it is today. Jack Daniels? Founded 1866 if you believe what they tell you, historians put it at more like ten years later.

There was a big legal storm about labeling Bourbon in the US, much like the nitpicky restrictions you see on wine labeling these days. What was bourbon? Single distilled sour mash aged and bottled in Bourbon County, KY? Jack Daniel realized in those days that the average bourbon drinker wasn't the type to give a shit about any of that, the average bourbon drinker was an illiterate farmer. Jack made the wise business decision of setting up business in (Moore County, TN) he felt like it, came up with something easy and cheap to make that approximated the taste of bourbon, and put it in a square bottle with a black label that looked like what the average bourbon drinker was already buying. Jack Daniels is the real knockoff, but it's now the number 1 in the US, and who can argue with that? Drink whichever you like, just don't think Evan ripped off Jack.

Guinness isn't the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a very basic stout that you can get anywhere, but nothing particularly special as far as stouts go. More of a high school/college faux beer snob drink (I used to be one of those people) than a masterpiece. Now 20 people will jump down my throat for not worshiping Guinness, but I stand by what I said.

* - Bolded stuff is the important part if you're skimming.

CinnamonGirl 07-27-2009 10:52 AM

Well, I meant opposite in that one is ridiculously light, the other is thick and dark.

I'm definitely curious about the Shakespeare Stout now... I'll have to check that out soon.

Bodyhammer86 07-27-2009 01:11 PM

I drink mostly microbrewed beer and I also like a few American "premium" brands like Killian's Irish Red, Blue Moon, Amber Bock, and so on as well when I can't get ahold of the microbrewed stuff. Of course, I like a few imported beers such as Smithwick, Bass, and Newcastle also.

Microbrews I like:
Three Floyd's Brewing Company (Robert the Bruce and the Pride and Joy ales)
New Belgium Brewing Company (Fat Tire Amber ale)
Magic Hat Brewing Company (#9 Not Quite Pale ale)
Brugge Tripel Del Ripple and Black Ales (brewpub in Indianapolis)
The Ram Buttface Amber ale (Restaurant in Indy)

I don't worship Guinness. I've had many other stouts. I just prefer Guinness.

Don't worry, I won't jump down your throat for not liking it... =)

I like Evan Williams, unless we are talking top shelf whiskey, then it all tastes the same.

After 4 shots you don't taste it anyway.

Whiskey snobs, don't give me shit, the bottom 3 shelfs of the Whiskey isle tastes the same.

Punk.of.Ages 07-27-2009 01:42 PM

Evan Williams is cheap as fuck here! It's what we get if we want bourbon.

Well, that or Ancient Age. sometimes it's cheaper.

LordEden 07-27-2009 01:46 PM

We did that, George Dickle, JD or Evan. Then my friend got real poor like and we started drinking LTD Canadian whiskey and the horrible of the horrible; Canadian Hunter. Oh god did those two suck.

I M O , Scotch is one of the most disgusting things I've ever put in my mouth , and I've had some crazy shit in my mouth . . . CAP'T (white) AND PEPSI , with as much ice as the glass will hold please , and thank you . . .

a COLD Bud on a hot sweaty day is pretty good as well , but beer gives me a wicked headache , every time . . .

Zeraph 07-28-2009 12:12 PM

And btw this

is delicious! Orange Blossom Cream Ale

Martian 07-28-2009 12:19 PM

I drink very rarely. I do, however, have a nice Merlot in the fridge right now that I've been enjoying. I'll likely have a glass once a week or so until the bottle empties, and not drink again until I come across something else tasty through luck or happenstance.

I've been very occasionally known to order a beer when out with friends. It's rare enough to be remarkable. I'll generally go for the best ale on tap, although depending on where I happen to be that might not necessarily be anything particularly noteworthy.

My attitude toward drinking is that I do it seldom enough that when I do I might as well go for the best available to me.

grumpyolddude 07-28-2009 04:31 PM

I prefer beer with some color and body. Smithwick's and Newcastle are my favorites, although I'll never pass on a Guiness or Murphy's stout. I really enjoy trying new microbrews, when I have the chance.

Blue Moon and Corona drinkers won't have to fight me for their fair share. I think that any beer that needs fruit to be palatable is to be avoided. If there's a better use for a slice of lime than in an ice-cold vodka and tonic (I prefer Stoli, Grey Goose or Skyy), I've yet to find it (sorry, guccilvr, Ketel One doesn't do it for me).

I don't enjoy much dark liquor, except an occasional shot of a smooth whiskey. Even the expensive scotch is wasted on me.

I can't tolerate schnapps or Southern Comfort. They both engage my gag reflex... can't even swallow them!

If you just want to hang out and drink beer all night, though, Labatt Blue or Molson Canadian will do just fine... Detroit Lager is pretty good, too!

MonicaCo 07-29-2009 07:51 AM

I don't drink but if I do, I enjoy a Cuba Libre or a Whiskey Sour.

Anyone who likes beer will probably find something they really like among Rogue's lineup. I have a ~400 page beer review book from the mid '90s that rated Shakespeare Stout highest, so I tried that Dead Guy Ale when I saw them. My mom picked me up a bottle of Imperial Pilsener a few years ago, which came in a clay crock bottle and cost around $15 for 2 pints. Great stuff, but I never saw it in a store again.

When I read this, I was thinking to myself, was there someone named Phil there when we had the awful time with the barbed wire, and the guy in the pick=up truck wasn't much help.
And we had all been drinking Boodles, oodles of Boodles!

My favorite? Pineapple juice and coconut rum. Tastes extremely yummy, I can drink a lot of them.

When I go out, I usually get margaritas or mojitos.

At home, I drink Woodchuck. The Amber version.
