Wearing dead animals?
I'm just wondering do you find dead animal fashion attractive or cool.
What is dead animal fashion? Well, It's not just leather or fur. It's a mink scarf with the head and paws still intact. It's a bear skin rug. It's a bow tie with a mouse head sticking through the middle of it. It's a headdress with rats on it. http://i31.tinypic.com/x38i28.jpg or a guinea pig comb http://i31.tinypic.com/jkun1l.jpg For me, I want to like it because I think it looks cool, or at least very unique but can't bring myself to because it's just seems unusually inhumane. I don't know why I think that. I'm not a vegetarian and I don't care that much how the animals I end up eating are treated. Well, I care but not enough to act on it which is the same as not caring I guess. How is eating meat or wearing leather different than wearing a guinea pig as a headpiece? I dunno.. |
I wear leather often. It isn't any different than wearing a guinea pig, except that that guinea pig comb is fucking hideous!
I don't think wearing fur is cool or attractive. It's just too flashy for my taste. Though, I have been known to use faux-leopard skin from time to time. I think using animals as clothes only becomes a problem when you're wearing an endangered animal. |

I feel differently about leather and fur. We kill TONS of cows a day, I would prefer that the hides go to making something that can be useful instead of being wasted. We are not going to stop killing cows, let's make full use out of the whole thing. Waste not want not.
Fur? Again I'm a geek, but a fur trimmed cloak is the SHIT in my mind. If I could have my way I would have a huge rabbit fur trimmed cloak for when I go to SCA events or the ren fest to wear. I think anyone should be allowed to wear fur..... If they kill the animals themselves. You kill it, clean it, tan it, sew it, THEN you can wear it. Otherwise, stop killing animals that you don't eat. Until I see rich women roasting ferrets over an open fire while salting a hide in order to preserve it, don't wear the shit. If I had a bear attack me in the woods and I managed to kill it before it killed me, you better fucking believe that I'm going to get the meat off of him to cook. Then I'm going to get someone to tan the hide and turn it into a huge rug for my study. This all hangs on the fact that the bear doesn't kill my 130lb ass before hand. Those pics? Hell no, tho Anthony Bordain says that guinea pig is good to eat. |
Guinea pig is fucking tasty, man!
I agree that if you're going to wear it, you should eat it and use all the parts, but, as long as it's not an endangered species, I don't care enough to bitch about it... |
I wear tons of leather, but I would never touch anything like that. I like my dead things prepared for consumption or use, not stuffed.

oh, mouse, i read it as moose. still wouldn't wear it. i don't have too much of a problem using animals as food/clothing, if, as LordEden said, we don't waste them and we honor them by using them completely. but rats on a headdress? really? maybe marylin manson could make it work, but he's about the only one i can think of. using dead animals as fashion, without function, seems disrespectful to me. ---------- Post added at 04:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:07 PM ---------- Quote:

I'd not wear any of those things mentioned or pictured because they look like shit. Not because of any moral objection.
A bear skin rug in my den would perhaps look dandy. But it isn't anything I would pursue unless I killed it myself with some great story to go along with it. |

I just had to repost on this thread, I can't believe I forgot about HER! HAHA She had a hamster skull as her bow tie! Anyone else remember her from Tiny Toons?? |
Elmyra!
My grandma was obsessed with her when I was a kid. My childhood dog was a rottweiler named Elmyra because of this. |
I feel better knowing if I am eating the cow the other parts of it were used as well, as in leather. I wish we would use more of the remains and not waste as much as we do.
I will never wear fur, because it was only killed for the fur. If the leather is from an animal that was only killed for it's skin, than I rather not wear it. I have a friend who made one of her favorite pet rat's skull into a necklace after it died of natural causes. I see no problem with that, even if it is not something I would do. I imagine the meanest tribal peoples, still together today, don't wear animals in their everyday garb. Probably only for ceremonial purposes.
Personally, I would still like a coonskin cap from reading about Dan'l Boone and Davy Crockett, but I doubt that will ever happen. I don't go hunting any more, and raccoons aren't hunted for meat. (that I know of) Also, I would like a buffalo headdress. Those ^^ little rat and guinea pig accessories look silly. If I saw a friend wearing those, I'd sneak up on them and swat it off their head. |
Am I the only one who laughed out loud at the guinea pig hair-comb? Of course it's not really my style, but it cracked me up....
I don't wear many animal products--the occasional pair of leather shoes, but that's about it. Like most have said, I make a distinction between fur and leather. Although I love the look of a beautiful mink coat, I just can't get square with the idea of killing an animal for the sole purpose of wearing its fur. |

I think the guinea pig hair comb winked at me....
|
The closest that I come to wearing dead animals is the leather jacket that I wear whenever it's not to hot or to cold. I have no real objection to fur. Well...some fur. Rabbit, for example, I have no problem with. Too many of the little bastards eating up my garden plants as it is. Baby seal fur? Yeah...I guess I have a bit of a problem with that. It's all rather relative.
But... Rat headbands? And guinea pig combs? Oh, that's just naaasty. |

ooooo Elmyra! So funny....loved her voice heh.
Yeah those are weird, and creepy. I'm not really into wearing fur but I do have a few clothes made from animal skin. I'm not sure which way I go on that. I tend to think if it's not endangered, and we kill it for food anyway, why not? No need to waste the rest of the animal. But to wear heads on clothing is too much for me. It's ugly and it seems callous. |
...think of all the protesters wearing leather shoes and carrying signs saying it's wrong to kill animals. Frankly, i have a problem with killing anything with a face...but then i eat fish.
|
I have a NY Jets leather jacket. I dont have a problem with wearing it, I wear it cos I like it, not just I think its trendy or cool.
|
I'd much rather stick to human pelts.
|
Oh my god, a guinea pig comb!
If I left it in my hair, it'd look like a guinea pig was trying to escape from my skull. Halloween costume '09, here I come! |
Maybe we need a "Wear a Dead Animal Day".
|
It's not much of an ethical concern for me, but I'd have to call the fashion police if I saw someone wearing the stuff in the OP.

I once found a flattened mouse when I was cleaning a couch at the co-op. It was as flat as a piece of paper - apparently it kept getting smashed as it decomposed. I couldn't stop laughing at the thing. I framed it, showed it to a couple of people I thought would appreciate it, then hung it on the wall. Someone was really bothered by the ordeal, and it disappeared within the hour. Apparently people don't expect a vegetarian to react this way to a dead mouse - a few residents were uneasy around me for a few days afterward.

ill that is so gross! i hate animals so i would never wear their fur or nasty headbands. ew makes me wanna gag.
