Six percent of Americans think the moon landing was a hoax.

Another fact that half of Americans still don't accept: Evolution. Not only is denying evolution contradicting hundreds of years of scientific research on the subject, it's denying genetics.
That comes out to almost 20 million people. They left mirrors up there so we could use laser ranging to find out just how far away it is, and the measurements are down to an accuracy of within a centimeter. On the subject, this is a photo of the Apollo 14 landing site taken by the LRO to help calibrate the cameras on its way to orbit On the right side, there are two deep craters and a shallower one. Above and to the left of the shallower one is a white spot with a shadow pointing to the right. That's the lander. There are lines slightly darker than the surrounding soil going off to the left of those. Those are footprints. The white dot above the left end of them is a set of instruments, including some of the aforementioned mirrors. |

Ugh! I had one of these moments today. I was volunteering for something at church, and this grandma holding her grandbaby says to me something about how the baby recognizes herself in the mirror, and how she loves that babies in general recognize themselves in the mirror. I said, actually, they think it's another baby, as infants have little theory of mind; theory of mind (knowledge of the self as separate from others, knowledge of the internal self) does not develop until after age 2. Grandma then informs that I am wrong and that babies recognize themselves in the mirror when they're quite young--that I would be surprised. I said, no, that's just not true, and I know it isn't true because I am a human development major; I spend most of my time studying this stuff, and theory of mind is one of my pet interests. WELL, she says, I was a NURSE and have YEARS of parenting experience. At that point, we agreed to disagree, because I was not going to give into her as an Authority. One of my friends was standing next to me the entire time this was going on, and she was biting back the laughter as Grandma walked away, because it was obvious to her who was right.
Ugh. Idiots.

^^ Yeah, I would have laughed too. I mean, I have NEVER been in a position I need to convince someone against their beliefs. Just what satisfaction does it have? I mean, the more stupid people the more likely they will be hit by a bus the less people I have winning my lottery.

I used to get worked up over people like this. But now I just let it go. I have more important things to spend my energy on that this sort of stuff.
