Conservatives hate mustard

I'm putting this in GD because well.. I hate the politics board and it's quite funny to me. Perhaps it should even go into nonsense.

Sean Hannity seems to take offense to Obama ordering mustard on his burger instead of ketchup.. add that it was a Dujon mustard and he's just a terrible person and can't believe that anyone that does that would be elected president.

Quote:

Oh hi, everyone! Are we still doing that election year thing, where if a politician consumes anything other than box wine, Busch, and self-killed moose meat, it means they are elitist? Apparently, this is the case, and so, the national nightmare for arugula -- which would probably be better off if it were referred to as "rocket" like the Brits do -- continues.

As you know, President Obama and Vice President Biden made a historic trip to an Arlington, VA hamburger joint, to celebrate the "stress tests" or something, bringing the entire press corps in tow. Well, it took all of Sean Hannity's brain power to come up with a joke about it, but he finally decided to make fun of the fact that Obama wanted a "spicy" or "Dijon" mustard on his cheeseburger, just like the undead Nikita Khruschev prefers.

Of course, I could harp on the fact that Grey Poupon is actually a pretty inexpensive condiment, a bottle of which I have right now in my palatial 800-square-foot apartment manor, but that's really beside the point. If you really want to dig down into the elitism of the outing, consider this - as Washingtonian points out, at Ray's Hell Burgers, "You can order the patties simply grilled, with a chipotle-spiked 'diablo' marinade, blackened Cajun-style, or au poivre with a black-peppercorn crust." Fancy! And if Obama had really wanted to strut his elite tastes, he could have opted to add any number of artisanal cheeses, like Dutch mustard seed Gouda, Queen Anne Stilton, or a cave-aged Amish cheddar. See! If Hannity had done some research, he could have really unleashed an epic, idiot barrage over fancy foodstuffs.

Of course, the burgers start at $7, because restauranteur Michael Landrum seems to think that quality food should be made affordable. Enjoying the burgers are well within reach of multimillionaire infotainer toffs like Sean Hannity. Anyway, Dijon mustard: normal people eat it, you can get it at fracking Au Bon Pain, for Pete's sake, so, enough. Okay? Enough. And thus endeth Eat The Press' brief foray into Zagats' territory.

UPDATES:

Here's Mark Steyn, subbing for Rush Limbaugh, saying, "John Kerry couldn't get away with that stuff but he makes it seem like just like a regular thing to do." Awesome, Mark! A John Kerry joke! Wow. Tell us more about your exciting trip back in time to the magical world of 2004!
Hannity Attacks Obama For Putting Mustard On His Burger [UPDATED]

isn't the President Poupon heading brilliant? Who would have thought such subtle potty humor existed at Faux News.

In the link, Mark Steyn fills in for Limbaugh and wonders "what kind of man orders mustard on a burger and not ketchup"

The same for Laura Ingram.

Perhaps these people have never been to Chicago.. or they've never grown up. I don't eat ketchup on anything. I use mustard. Ketchup isn't bad, I just prefer mustard.

All I know is that Obama must be doing something right if the only thing the Right Wing Circus has to complain about is what condiments the man puts on a burger. What a sad day for conservatives and journalism in general.

samcol 05-08-2009 05:54 AM

I'm a conservative and I fucking love mustard. I don't eat ketchup on anything it's mustard and hot sauce

Baraka_Guru 05-08-2009 05:59 AM

The Dijongate Scandal! Obama likes good mustard!

I had the video clip in Found on the Net, but I saw this in GD, and rightly so.

I asked when it was conservatives jumped the shark...but then I remembered: it was at "freedom fries"....

Wrexify 05-08-2009 06:00 AM

Mustard?! Unbelievable... I can't believe I voted for him now. What's he playing at, anyway? He should be eating only bread and water to show solidarity.

I'm the same way.
I prefer mustard on my anything over ketchup, save for chips.

And for whatever reason, the particular phrasing in the article above makes it absolutely impossible for me to read it in full. I've tried four times now, and each time I try to get past the second or third paragraph, I get distracted by one of the myriad of quotation or exclamation marks.

fresnelly 05-08-2009 06:29 AM

How tacky!

Plan9 05-08-2009 06:34 AM

Wait... I like stem cells, abortion, AND mustard. What does that mean? I'm a SUPER LIBERAL.

(cleans guns, eats venison steak, notices he was in the military)

I'M SO CONFUSED.

No one said it was easy being a liberal.

KirStang 05-08-2009 07:03 AM

How Dare Obama! Using that, elitist, french sauce. He's so out of touch with reality.

And Fox wonders why it lacks credibility...

Glory's Sun 05-08-2009 07:04 AM

if a conservative puts ketchup on scrambled eggs.. does that make him pro-abortion?

snowy 05-08-2009 07:21 AM

My SO actually thought it was awesome that President Obama ordered a burger without ketchup--being a veggie, he's not a fan of the burger part, but he hates ketchup with a passion. I don't understand it myself; I like ketchup. I also like mustard, and like the President, I prefer spicy mustard--brown, dijon, deli, whatever.

My roommate commented that he liked how Obama ordered the burger "presidentially."

Personally, I think a person has the right to order their cheeseburger however they want to, and we shouldn't read too much into it. Sean Hannity is just silly, but that's really nothing new. I wonder what he would have to say about my fridge--we usually have a few different varieties of mustard. :D

Iliftrocks 05-08-2009 07:24 AM

This kind of crap is all they've got..... But it seems to work for the loyal 29 percenters.

Personally, I've never been a fan of ketchup ( or catsup ), and I'll always pick mustard over it. Dijon is good, but good old fashioned yellow will do just fine too.

I have to agree with that. I noticed how he took a bunch of thoughtful pauses between words--kind of like he was still debating John McCain. Wonder if he always speaks like that.

mrklixx 05-08-2009 07:51 AM

I like ketchup, mustard, and mayo on my burgers. That pretty much sums up my politics too. ;)

lostgirl 05-08-2009 08:12 AM

Ketchup is gross, I don't eat it on anything. I am a mustard woman myself.

FoolThemAll 05-08-2009 09:10 AM

I was all set to behold Hannity as the centerpiece of absurdity in this thread, but it looks like viewing him as a mouthpiece for conservatism tops it.

Lindy 05-08-2009 09:12 AM

I'm a political conservative, (though I voted for Obama) and I love mustard. Well, at least some mustard. I like Dijon but I prefer ( please excuse the elitism) the more coarse style, made from whole mustard seed, that has some texture. But while there is basically only one ketchup, there must be a hundred different mustards. At least a hundred.
While I generally prefer mustard over ketchup, I think some foods do go better with one than the other.

Ketchup goes with:
hamburgers
meatloaf
buffalo
french fries
fried egg sandwich (my Dad's favorite)
onion rings
hashbrowns
shrimp ("cocktail sauce" =ketchup + horseradish)
not much else:rolleyes:

Mustard may go well with:
pork
ham
chicken
fish
bratwurst & most other sausages
Asian food
corned beef
pastrami
potato salad and lots of other things as an ingredient -- not as a condiment:)
I don't care for the yellow American style mustard. Sorry, elitism again. It is palatable only if served on a hotdog at Fenway Park.;)
Just my "conservative" opinions.

Hyacinthe 05-08-2009 09:33 AM

Mustard goes with everything! Even with more mustard. Infact if having Dijon makes me an elitist then I hate to think what the entire fridge door shelf full of mustards I currently own and use says about me.

I do wonder if the complaint would have been made if he had asked for American rather then Dijon mustard.

If it makes you all feel better our Prime Minister is currently battling rumours that he chucked a tantrum when the Afghans didn't have the type of hair drier he wanted:rolleyes:

crazybobmarley 05-08-2009 09:36 AM

This can't be real...

I think Colbert has a secret deal with Hannity to just provide him this sort of fodder.

percy 05-08-2009 09:43 AM

This is almost as crazy as James Carville predicting the Democrats will be in power for the next 40 years

Lasereth 05-08-2009 10:55 AM

I can't believe that this made it to the news. WHO FUCKING CARES!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ratbastid 05-08-2009 11:14 AM

Hannity's right: Obama's probably secretly gay.

That's what he's implying, right? Effete, elitist, fancy eater, snappy dresser?

Grasshopper Green 05-08-2009 11:22 AM

I like ketchup AND mustard on my burgers. Where does that leave me?

Given the choice of only one, I'd take mustard, though.

djtestudo 05-08-2009 11:48 AM

Conservatives hate mustard because when you spill it on your shirt it makes you look like a yellow-bellied coward...

And my guess is that if the president had ordered ketchup on his burger Hannity would have been calling him a Red Communist.

Stupid people are stupid no matter their politics. I hate having to be on Hannity's side of the political spectrum.

uncle phil 05-08-2009 11:56 AM

generally i prefer catsup on my hamburgers and mustard on my hot dogs, but every once in a while...

There's a hotdog place here that will take your picture and post it on their "wall of shame" if you put ketchup on your hotdog. Mustard is expected to be on the hotdog.

Charlatan 05-08-2009 04:52 PM

I think the fact that many people across the US eat spicy mustard and it is not an elite condiment, shows just how out of touch Hannity is with the average person.

fresnelly 05-08-2009 04:55 PM

Has Hannity continued with this at all or was it just a one-off rant?

SabrinaFair 05-08-2009 05:58 PM

I can't believe this is considered "news"....I can't believe I feel like I have to defend my President on his choice of condiments....is this really the level of public discourse in America?

And as someone who hates yellow "American" mustard with an abiding passion, but adores brown/dijon mustard, I have to say good ordering, Mr. President. :-)

dlish 05-08-2009 07:53 PM

its not ketchup dammit..its tomato sauce!

CinnamonGirl 05-08-2009 09:10 PM

Ewwwwww, mustard.

...still not quite sure why this is news, though. Slow day, perhaps?

I doubt it was a slow day, it's just the right wing media doing everything they can to put a spin on everything Obama does to stir up their base and make the man look bad somehow. Hopefully this backfired though. Really, it's no different than the left wing media and how they spun everything that Bush did in a negative light, but I don't remember it getting this stupid.

it's either that...or Hannity is just an idiot.

ok. it's both ;)

Baraka_Guru 05-09-2009 04:53 AM

Hey, do you remember when Reagan tried to make ketchup a vegetable?

Yes, yes I do. Also remember when he claimed trees produce more pollution then cars. He was an idiot but no where near the degrees of which Hannity reaches.

snowy 05-09-2009 06:18 AM

Someone on NPR this morning suggested that the President ordering Dijon mustard might be an attempt to reach out to the French government and Sarkozy in an attempt to get them to commit more troops in Afghanistan. I got a chuckle out of that.

SSJTWIZTA 05-09-2009 06:46 AM

what ever happened to using both?

anywho, mustard > ketchup here.

Zeraph 05-09-2009 07:28 AM

I like both equally. Inform the press!

All I could think of is...

Oh man, Obama watched Seinfeld when he was growing up too!?
