Molester would pay for his own castration

SANTA CRUZ — A sexually violent predator who served the required 14 years of a 29-year prison sentence for molesting an 8-year-old boy wants to be castrated.

And he says he’s willing to pay for it.

Last year, Gregory Donald Grant asked the county to pay for the operation, a request Judge Art Danner denied.

On Monday, Grant, 57, and his attorney were back in court, seeking permission for the procedure, which can cost up to $5,000.

But Danner said he must first hear from at least one expert to make sure Grant knows all the implications of his request.

It’s unclear how Grant has the means to pay for the operation.

Grant had a record of sexually assaulting boys when he was sentenced in 1983 to 29 years in prison for kidnapping and molesting an 8-year-old boy he met at the Beach Boardwalk.

In 1998, when he was up for parole, county jurors decided that Grant qualified as a sexually violent predator under a 1996 state law. That decision sent him to Atascadero State Hospital for a renewable two-year term.

His renewal hearings have been tied up in court since 2000 due to several appeals in what prosecutor Christine McGuire calls "a pretty litigious process."

The reason for his request was not detailed Monday, but McGuire said Grant wants the operation so he can get out of the state mental hospital. But, she said, castration is no guarantee of release.

His attorney said Grant has several reasons for wanting the castration, which he declined to specify.

McGuire cited an order from the state Department of Mental Health which says the procedure has limited benefit and significant social and medical issues which make it "a poor choice for sex offenders."

Poor or not, it’s his choice, argued attorney Art Dudley, who contended it is his client’s constitutional right to decide on his medical care.

"It’s his decision, and his decision alone," he said.

Denying the request would be "emasculating my client’s right to privacy," Dudley said.

Danner ordered a hearing with testimony by at least one doctor "who has taken into account other viewpoints."

He also ruled the District Attorney’s Office had "no standing" to argue the issue.

Danner asked Dudley to return Wednesday with a report on what doctor or doctors he could line up.

Grant complained last year that the anti-androgen drugs he was taking, which act as a "chemical castration" and prevent the release of testosterone, were causing harmful side effects. They can weaken bone mass, Dudley said.

Last year, psychologist Deborah Paladino testified Grant had refused to participate in psychological classes and said the operation alone would not make him safe for release into the community.

Conversely, psychiatrist Mary Flavan testified that castration would be the only effective way to stop Grant from acting on his urges to molest children.

Grant uses a wheelcharin after a 1981 industrial accident. In the crime which led to his 1983 conviction, he had offered the 8-year-old boy $1 to push him around before forcing the child into his car and then into a motel room.

Danner was district attorney in 1998 and petitioned the court to have Grant committed under the sexually violent predator law.

The law allows for sex offenders who have victimized at least two people, who are deemed to have a mental disorder and who may pose a continued risk to be committed for additional two-year terms in a state mental hospital. A state Department of Mental Health evaluation found that Grant suffered from pedophilia, a disorder marked by sexual attraction to children and sadism.

His record includes convictions for molesting boys in Southern California and Kansas. Similar charges were filed against him, but dropped, in Contra Costa County.

I say let him do it. Or better yet. Cut his god damn head off!

The_Dude 07-02-2003 12:18 PM

I agree. Let him be castrated, no real loss to anyone else and he's asking for it.

lady 07-02-2003 12:19 PM

does castration really guarantee that he won't re-offend though?

komodo 07-02-2003 12:20 PM

I think this idea has serious merit. He may have realized that he has no chance to be rehabilitated, and is taking a step he knows is necessary to prevent further criminal acts. It's an unpleasant step, but it's likely the only way to prevent further assaults and jail time.

Daval 07-02-2003 12:21 PM

let him do it.

rockzilla 07-02-2003 12:29 PM

Pffft, I'll do it for him, no charge.

No. That's the problem. That's also why I suggested to cut his head off. Not the head between his legs either. ;)

The_Dude 07-02-2003 01:21 PM

well, cuttin the head jr would solve the problem, he wont be able to do it again

micah67 07-02-2003 02:47 PM

I agree, I don't think it'd fix what's messed up with his mind.

Angel 07-02-2003 03:26 PM

Snip. Period.
I have WAY too much passion about this subject to even begin saying more than that.

World's King 07-02-2003 03:31 PM

Let him cut it off.

It's not like he's been using it for good.

uncle phil 07-02-2003 04:02 PM

i've got the knife...and it's a BIG knife...

Cujo 07-02-2003 06:14 PM

I agree with the posted sentiments, as for your header for this thread. Child molesters have no brains and should be locked up for life without any chance of parole. No 3 strikes your out shit or faint hope clause. Lock the fuckers up and throw away the key.

vermin 07-02-2003 06:20 PM

Castrate him and then don't release him. Suprise, suprise.

Tom Thumb 07-02-2003 09:16 PM

Let him do it...free country, but suffice it to say that it's unlikely it'll solve much of anything that prison hasn't already solved. Molestation, and other forms of rape, are more about power than sex. I think castration makes it all the more likely that a molester would find a more dangerous way to rape their victims.

But if he really wants to...*shrug*

Fremen 07-02-2003 09:30 PM

Send him to a palsied Moyel.

lafemmefatale 07-02-2003 09:36 PM

sexual predators in general are NOT looking for sexual gratification, they're lookng to hurt someone in a demeaning, and digusting way...castration will not do the trick, even ripping apart all his genitals [while a good revenge] will not deterr him from his goal of hurting people for he can just as easily use his hands, weapons etc. and continue although now in a non sexual and solely violent manner...

XenuHubbard 07-02-2003 09:56 PM

All peadophiles are not sexual predators. Some actually believe in love, and that what they do is a beautiful thing that helps both parties.

They're all scumbags, though.

And shit, when will the US get over that "chemical castration" thing? It's just a license to rape without being suspected later.
The effects can be reversed with testosterone, which is easy to find for those creeps. They stick together like nothing else.

rs8001 07-05-2003 12:27 AM

They do it in Texas.

This isn't the first time this has come up. In 1995 Larry Don McQuay wanted the state to castrate him. He even threatened that he'd repeat his crimes if he did not. I remember it was in the news quite a bit. The state eventually released him saying he'd have to pay for his castration. According to this article he was back in prison in 1997. In his case I remember it was reported they were unable to find someone willing to perform this procedure on him. Since then, according to that article, Texas has passed a law making castration available to child molestors. I wonder if anyone has taken this opportunity up.

At the time there was much debate about this with many weighing in as some of the above posters: castration is not necessarily going to stop this people from repeating their crimes. I agree with them. Is there more at work than hormones here? There certianly must be. If someone wants to be castrated fine but I wouldn't look at it as any sort of guarantee.

One of the other articles I found with a quick google search mention chemical castration was considered in California. It would have required weekly doses. Somethings tells me that wouldn't have worked either. I wonder what became of that.

The punishment should be extremely harsh for these offenders. I'm thinking many many many many many years behind bars. About ten times the eight or so Larry Don McQuay was originally sentenced to.

How about if you abuse & fuck a child
you die.
period.

seretogis 07-05-2003 05:30 AM

Castrate him, and then remove his arms and legs as well. If this occurs after Bush's malpractice caps are put into effect, he'll only be able to get $150k for that "mistake" and society will be safer than before.

I absolutely agree.

cowudders14 07-05-2003 02:02 PM

Take off one of his balls, slowly, without anaesthetic, making him watch the procedure. Explain that he other one will be removed in the same way if he re-offends...

edit: Oh, and make him pay for the procedure too!

Who cares? Does anyone here care for the poor sexual predator? I hope not, what I want is this guy to rot in jail, "for great justice!"

... who cares, honestly?

it can't hurt by any means.

there was a guy about seven or so years ago who did this, too. he had molested a kid, too, and had tried several kinds of help to quit craving such actions.

i could be wrong, but i think he had requested mental health help before, also.

the guy is about the only molester i ever had a bit of compassion for because he said more than once 'help cuz i can't keep myself away much longer'.

as to if he got help or not i dunno.

rat 07-05-2003 11:46 PM

castration has been proven not to permanently curb the urges for sexual predators at all. castration removes the testicles from the man, it doesn't turn him into a penis-less object. rape, molestation and other forms of sexual assault can still be accomplished with the penis or other phallic objects. it solves nothing. locking the offender up or executing him does.
