Question for Shakran...

For just 70 cents a day, less than the price of a cup of coffee, you can make sure that a Halx gets food, warm clothing, and a server for TFP. Won't you please donate? - shakran

Where do you live where coffee is only $.70 per cup? It's way more than that here!

You're buying it in the wrong place. My hospital cafeteria sells coffee at 59 cents per cup. They are located right above a $tarbuck$ and recently added a BIG black and white sign that can be seen from the Starbucks line that says, "COFFEE 59 cents". I found it amusing, but as far as I can tell it hasn't moved the Starbucks drinkers to change their consumption habits.

Or Shakran may have been suggesting that the cost of the cup of coffee is for one that you brew yourself. Which is certainly less than $.70 unless you are using some pretty exotic beans.

Lastly, perhaps Shakran was trying to be light-hearted and funny, mocking the the Sally Struthers Feed the Children type of commercial.

Socialized coffee doesn't work. You'll end up waiting 2 weeks for a large with cream and sugar. Plus, do you really want the government telling you what type of coffee to drink?

We had a little mod competition to see who could come up with the funniest tag line for the donation drive. Shakran's a great guy, but I'm pissed I didn't win by blaming all of you for TFP going away.

There was a 'goal' that was posted earlier, now that is gone. Is that based on the estimated annual cost divided by 12? What are the total costs for the site?

Has the same effect on me as the for just penny's a day you can save this child, I generally change the channel, I don't know if the money's going to save said child, same thing I do here when I see the notice, I simply ignore it. I like this place, I really do, but not enough to give money to it, maybe a couple of years ago I would have when it was actually enjoyable, but not now that I'd rather just check out posts here and there and maybe make a comment if I feel like it.

On the other hand, there are many things worth more than 70 cents.

Haha, this is true, but relatively speaking coffee is at least CLOSE to 70c, even if it's twice as much. (And I'll admit, I have no idea what coffee costs because I don't drink it.)

Is coffee still coffee if you have to put creamer and loads of sugar in it to enjoy it?
Otherwise, I don't drink it.
I do cook with it, though.

If it was church it'd be up all the time. Post Vatican II there's been a demand for extreme donation begging to the point of crazy tithing.

I'm just trying to cover the expenses of the co located server which to answer someone else's question it is posted up on the donation bar at $200/month.

For one thing, if you paid any attention to stickies, site notices, or the giant red bar that was across the top of the homepage for a few days, you would already know the answer to your question. Sorry if we don't feel like repeating ourselves.

As for why there has been a historical aversion to it, it's because we don't like to feel like we're panhandling you for money. Think of it as part of the TFP experiment: can a site be run without assaulting you with advertisements and without asking you for money all the time? There's a simple "Donate now!" button at the top, and if you like the site and are able, then you should help out the community. In fact, Halx has tried so hard to keep money out of the TFP experience that he has frequently had to foot the bill himself, rather than ask everyone for money each month.

Unfortunately - and maybe this is partly due to the recession - we find ourselves needing to remind people a little more often now. So, you've got the notices at the top of the page and the monthly red bar measuring progress. Ideally, TFP is a place for users to come and generate discussion, not be asked for money all the time. But sometimes we reluctantly have to do what is necessary to keep the site going.

And to answer your question, just scroll up to Cynthetiq's post #23. You can see why we get annoyed at repeating ourselves when the answer gets posted in this very thread and is still apparently missed.

To his credit, there's 5 stickies in each forum that, if printed would be like 30 pages each. Plus, I gave them to my lawyer and even he's confused.
