Here's a story that should wind up certain people on here!

Even I think this is a bit nuts

A fine and a bit of probation surely would have been enough (maybe two grand?)

Family shock at gun jail term
The father of a man sentenced to five years in prison for illegally possessing a gun said the jail term had left the family shocked.

Andrew Richardson, 48, of Wymondham, Norfolk, admitted possession of a rifle revolver and ammunition, at Norwich Crown Court on Friday.

The family said Richardson had kept the weapon in storage since bringing it from the US 12 years ago.

His father David said the family was considering an appeal.

The gun was found when Richardson's belongings were about to be auctioned off.

David Richardson said the sentence was unexpected: "You can imagine we were slightly shell-shocked because we had no idea this sort of thing was going to happen.

"We were incredibly surprised when Andrew's wife got a telephone call, from the court I think it was, sometime on Friday evening, to say that Andrew had been sent to prison.

"She knew he was in court for something or other, but she wasn't aware of what it was or certainly the seriousness of it, and probably Andrew wasn't either."

Course, we can look at pictures of half-naked chicks on page 3 while you Yanks would have to pluck your own eyes out if you ever saw so much as a nipple.

Who's more "victimized"?

It's the law, and I can't imagine it's one of those frustrating "secret laws". Does 5 years sound like any awful lot? Sure, but to be honest I can't speak to how England handles sentencing so it may be fair overall.

The UK has a parliament that represents them. If the people wanted the gun ban undone, they could get it undone.

Maybe. Remember that the Democrats were elected in '06 to stop the war, and yet we're still there. Just because the people want something doesn't mean the sons-a-bitches in office will do it.

That wasn't exactly black and white. The way i see it 2006 wasn't a mandate, it was simply the Dems gaining a bit of ground. I think Obama was the mandate, considering that he won by nearly 10 million votes, and now we're (hopefully) headed in the right direction with Iraq.

Anyway, you're right to point out it isn't exactly as simple as I posted, but it's where you start. We're representative democracies, after all.

some sort of punishment is fine. if its against the law, then so be it, you deserve some sort of punishment. but the blatant over-punishment is so wrong. jail should always be the last resort.

so the guy owned a guy. so fucking what! armed robbers get less for so much more. many armed robbers need their next hit, so its a double whammy, drugs AND guns.

he'll leave jail and be resentful of the system now.

owned a gun..you know what i mean :P

Xerxys 02-24-2009 10:26 AM

Right, the punishment is heavyhanded ... and also

No, it was a mandate. They sure didn't elect the Dems because they agreed with that party on the issues, otherwise all the issue votes would have swung progressive rather than neo-con. Remember that not one single gay marriage amendment passed, anywhere.

The guy is bound to appeal and get the sentence knocked down.

I agree with dlish. He broke the law and he cant walk away from it, but there is nothing I can see here that indicates jail time is warranted, let alone 5 years worth of grey days.

Just for balance, here's a similar story from the western side of the pond.

I thought most of Alabama had to commit hari-kari after Nipple-Gate at the Superbowl a couple of years ago?

Brits are afraid of guns, Americans are afraid of women's breasts, tomato, tomato.

When I lived in Virginia:
Signs were everywhere....Illegal gun? -Automatic 5 year sentence.
I saw these on the sides of buses, and every gas station in the area.

I do think this particular case could be reviewed,
perhaps they could change the signs to: Semi-automatic 5 year sentence.

Living in that iron-pipeline area was weird.
When I moved back to Wisconsin, I had an aquaintance ,that actually had the nerve to ask me to buy a gun for her.
I found out she was a convicted felon, twice over.
I snitched, I called the police and told them she was trying to purchase a gun illegally.
I hope by doing that, I kept a gun out of her hands.
I don't know how the story ended.

he needs a better barrister and maybe some sort of petition from people who know him
other then that its not like its a secret law that the British don't like guns though why so many(Americans) complain about it when the British are allowed side by side shotguns I don't know
