"Sex chip" for your brain

I remember seeing the Woody Allen film, Sleeper, and wondering about that Orgasmatron...well it looks like some doctors are setting about making this sort of "instant pleasure" a reality:

On the one hand, I find this could be an interesting invention. It could be useful to many, who have trouble achieving their O whenever they want it, and to people with health problems that make the big O harder to come by. I can also seeing it turn into some kind of masturbatory device!

On the other hand, I can see all sorts of awry problems coming from this too, like it being used against someone's will or it substituting "normal" routes of achieving pleasure, leading to people even forgetting how to achieve it any other way.

It could certainly simplify our lives considerably. But like all simplifications, what would the price be? With the Internet, and TV, we read and learn less and less, I have heard say countless times. I read somewhere the other day, in an interview with a well-known Portuguese author, that the problem with today's generation is that we want for nothing, and are curious of nothing. She said that lack of curiosity is a terrible thing, we have no thirst for knowledge and become more and more apathetic, unappreciative, and less able to cope with the curve balls life throws our way. Well, this is a bit of a stretch with regards to this orgasm machine, but you get what I mean.

If it came around I think I'd try it, if I was able to. If only once. But it may be akin to a plastic surgery of sorts - a quick fix that masks the deeper reasons behind our dissatisfaction. What do you think of this device? Would you try it?

Xerxys 12-27-2008 08:19 AM

It would fry my brain, thats for sure.

BadNick 12-27-2008 08:22 AM

Unless something happened to me that prevented me from feeling pleasures from sex and eating as I do now, I would have no interest whatsoever in trying this. But for someone who can't and wants to, I can see it might serve a useful purpose.

It seems that it could develop to the point of being able to trigger pleasures from many other things. So, for example, if your sense of smell is not functioning properly, you aren't able to fully enjoy eating or smelling a beautiful flower or another person. Turning on those pleasures could also be beneficial.

Plan9 12-27-2008 08:26 AM

So... this would do away with the female crime of faking orgasms?

...

I'm totally against anything that messes with my brain. Its already damaged enough by the mass media, US Army, and Henry Rollins "Weight" album.

Mankind has this weird habit of taking things solely intended for good and using them for evil.

grumpyolddude 12-27-2008 09:07 AM

Too many people are already confused about how they measure up to "normal." The pressure to perform up to porn star standards would drive a lot of folks to this sort of technology. No thanks. (although, maybe for the wife...;)... just joking, QW.... or amI:rolleyes:??)

Steering this research toward treating eating disorders would seem to be a more valuable contribution to society. If they could de-stimulate the pleasure from eating in some obese people (yes, I know that not all obesity is strictly due to overeating), or use it to treat anorexia, a much healthier population could result. That doesn't make much of a sensational news story. though.

biznatch 12-27-2008 11:50 AM

This French author, Bernard Werber, had a book with something exactly like this.
First they had tested them on rats, who had access to a switch that would send the impulse to the chip, providing them with pleasure. The rats developed larger arms from pressing the switch, and got addicted, eventually having a heart attack (I think) from all the endorphines (is it endorphines we get from sex?).
The mad scientist went to some brain surgeon in Russia to get it implanted in his brain, and trusted the "switch" to a supercomputer. Much like HAL, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the computer ended up evil and killed him with it. (I think)

Hey, if it can up the sex drive, great. But brain surgery to achieve a higher sex drive is a bit much for most people, I think.

little_tippler 12-28-2008 05:40 AM

biznatch, that sounds like an interesting book!

grumpy, that would be of greater use, in a sense, but the thought of taking away someone's pleasure just seems wrong to me. Life is already pretty complicated as it is, and adding pleasure to it seems far more positive to me. How about adding pleasure when we eat healthy things and exercise? I prefer a positive to a negative if possible.

I think of the tasp as written by Larry Niven in his Known Space books. People would get their brains wired, plug into the house current and eventually stop eating because they preferred to not interrupt the pleasure. Folks added batteries so you could tasp yourself as you went about your day.
Addiction to the tasp was widespread and difficult to break, but it was a self-correcting problem in that people addicted stopped contributing to the gene pool. Remote control taspers were developed so you could tasp an unsuspecting passerby and make their day. Only problem was people tasped that way often became addicted as well.
Interesting reading. I always recommend Niven.

Would this be equivalent to sex though? As in knowing its not for real.
Wasn't there a woman who claimed she had an orgasm 10 times everyday or something? I guess they said she was hypersensitive. She said it was painful at times. She was probably lying about the whole thing.
This control would also more likely be used to suppress the sex drive.

That's the first thing I thought of when I read this. I'm not so sure about the tasp being quite as addictive as Niven thought it would. Behavioral (ie, non-pharmalogical) addiction requires at least a little bit of learned response time.

Also, while the feelings of pleasure might be just as intense as the most intense sex, the other sensations wouldn't be there (unless they were 'called up' in some sort of reverse-kinesthesia...hrm), so I don't think people will be giving up on boinking anytime soon...at least, I hope not....

Vigilante 12-28-2008 05:52 PM

Ha, would be funny if a hacker set it off on someone at work.

I will never have a chip for anything. If chips became mandatory I would cut it out and head to a remote island.

bazkitcase5 12-28-2008 07:39 PM

yea, the idea of having brain surgery to implement a chip for pleasure sounds kind of crazy to me...

Introduction to Psychology: Readings: Section 2-1: Systematically Observing the Brain
Quote:

Pleasure Centers. Several areas within the limbic system, when stimulated electrically, are associated with feelings of reward and pleasure in mammals. In the 1950s, James Olds and Peter Milner discovered the first evidence for what was to become known as “pleasure centers” in the brain (Olds, 1955; Olds, 1958; Olds & Milner, 1954; also see Hebb, 1955 and Thompson, 1999). They had accidentally placed an electrode in a particular area of a rat’s limbic system and noticed that the rat seemed to enjoy electrical stimulation of this area. When they implanted electrodes in this same area in other rats, they found that electrical stimulation served as a reward for the learning of new behaviors. In fact, they allowed rats to press a lever that stimulated this area in their own brains. They found that rats press the lever as much as 2000 times an hour (an average of one lever press every 1-2 seconds). Rats sometimes would continue pressing until they dropped from exhaustion. In 1962, James Olds repeated these experiments with monkeys and obtained similar results (sometimes with lever presses as high as 8000 times per hour — about two presses every second). Other studies have found pleasure centers in cats, dogs, and dolphins.
It sounds like these people won't be too happy.

'They' will tempt you with infinite pleasure, but they really want to control you.

I think this is the way that computers will go. The brain computer interface will be a huge step and will allow for some interesting developments.

We are Borg.
You will be assimilated.
Resistance is futile.

MSD 12-31-2008 07:18 AM

Hook it up to a computer and you could take POV porn to new extremes.

But really, it sounds boring. Orgasm with no physical contact, even if it was just your hand, doesn't feel nearly as good.

hotzot 01-03-2009 08:31 PM

I'll wait till I can get one at walgreens.

murp0434 01-03-2009 08:40 PM

basically just like that movie Demolition Man in which they only have sex via VR helmets

Reese 01-04-2009 04:09 PM

Maybe it's just me being a lazy motherfucker but I have no problem with computers doing everything for me. I watch a movie like WALL-E and I think oh great that little bastard just came to their spaceship and fucked up everything.

Pleasure is pleasure. If given the choice to live in a VR world like the matrix, I'd fuckin do it. I'm a product of the sci-fi generation. What does it mean to be real? If you have everything you require to live a good life, why does it matter if it's not a physical reality? Living in VR world gets a bad rap from sci-fi stories.

Brain surgery is awfully risky though.. I'll have to wait for the next generation of technology before signing up. :)

You'd never have a pacemaker if you needed it?
It's my understanding they have chips in them. :)

mixedmedia 01-04-2009 09:16 PM

Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm, but I think this is stupid for anyone (perhaps) outside of the target audience of 'those who cannot experience pleasure from eating or sex.'

Why the fuck, why the fuck would anyone else be interested?

Can I just for now sing the praises of the effort of masturbation? ahhhhh! (that was singing)

When the day comes that people are too lazy to lift a finger (and their imagination) to get their own selves off that's the day I finally give up.

You deserve what you get.

hmmph.

In our generation's defense, that author sounds like a tool. I learn an absolute assload due to the Internet, and I enjoy continuing to do so. How old is this author? Because she sounds like a baby boomer who doesn't understand the way new technology operates very well and has thus declared an intellectual witch hunt.

Imagine the havoc you could wreck upon the sex offender community. You get convicted of a sex crime, and POOF - insta mind fuck NEUTERED. No more sex drive means so chance for repeat offenses. The world is a safer place once again.

Of course the human race will naturally use it as a biological warfare weapon and somehow concoct a method to enact genocide and racial cleansing - but then again - I don't think the research behind the atomic bomb was created to blow people up in the first place.

You don't need brain surgery to castrate someone :)

little_tippler 01-06-2009 11:34 AM

The author you refer to as a tool Suave, is one of the foremost female Portuguese authors, and she's in her 70's. I'm not sure I'd call her a tool. Just someone of a different generation, and I think she has a point.
