"Sex chip" for your brain
I remember seeing the Woody Allen film, Sleeper, and wondering about that Orgasmatron...well it looks like some doctors are setting about making this sort of "instant pleasure" a reality:

Unless something happened to me that prevented me from feeling pleasures from sex and eating as I do now, I would have no interest whatsoever in trying this. But for someone who can't and wants to, I can see it might serve a useful purpose.
It seems that it could develop to the point of being able to trigger pleasures from many other things. So, for example, if your sense of smell is not functioning properly, you aren't able to fully enjoy eating or smelling a beautiful flower or another person. Turning on those pleasures could also be beneficial. |
So... this would do away with the female crime of faking orgasms?
... I'm totally against anything that messes with my brain. Its already damaged enough by the mass media, US Army, and Henry Rollins "Weight" album. Mankind has this weird habit of taking things solely intended for good and using them for evil. |
Too many people are already confused about how they measure up to "normal." The pressure to perform up to porn star standards would drive a lot of folks to this sort of technology. No thanks. (although, maybe for the wife...;)... just joking, QW.... or amI:rolleyes:??)
Steering this research toward treating eating disorders would seem to be a more valuable contribution to society. If they could de-stimulate the pleasure from eating in some obese people (yes, I know that not all obesity is strictly due to overeating), or use it to treat anorexia, a much healthier population could result. That doesn't make much of a sensational news story. though. |
This French author, Bernard Werber, had a book with something exactly like this.
First they had tested them on rats, who had access to a switch that would send the impulse to the chip, providing them with pleasure. The rats developed larger arms from pressing the switch, and got addicted, eventually having a heart attack (I think) from all the endorphines (is it endorphines we get from sex?). The mad scientist went to some brain surgeon in Russia to get it implanted in his brain, and trusted the "switch" to a supercomputer. Much like HAL, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the computer ended up evil and killed him with it. (I think) Hey, if it can up the sex drive, great. But brain surgery to achieve a higher sex drive is a bit much for most people, I think. |
biznatch, that sounds like an interesting book!
grumpy, that would be of greater use, in a sense, but the thought of taking away someone's pleasure just seems wrong to me. Life is already pretty complicated as it is, and adding pleasure to it seems far more positive to me. How about adding pleasure when we eat healthy things and exercise? I prefer a positive to a negative if possible. |
I think of the tasp as written by Larry Niven in his Known Space books. People would get their brains wired, plug into the house current and eventually stop eating because they preferred to not interrupt the pleasure. Folks added batteries so you could tasp yourself as you went about your day.
Addiction to the tasp was widespread and difficult to break, but it was a self-correcting problem in that people addicted stopped contributing to the gene pool. Remote control taspers were developed so you could tasp an unsuspecting passerby and make their day. Only problem was people tasped that way often became addicted as well. Interesting reading. I always recommend Niven. |
Would this be equivalent to sex though? As in knowing its not for real.
Wasn't there a woman who claimed she had an orgasm 10 times everyday or something? I guess they said she was hypersensitive. She said it was painful at times. She was probably lying about the whole thing. This control would also more likely be used to suppress the sex drive. |

Maybe it's just me being a lazy motherfucker but I have no problem with computers doing everything for me. I watch a movie like WALL-E and I think oh great that little bastard just came to their spaceship and fucked up everything.
Pleasure is pleasure. If given the choice to live in a VR world like the matrix, I'd fuckin do it. I'm a product of the sci-fi generation. What does it mean to be real? If you have everything you require to live a good life, why does it matter if it's not a physical reality? Living in VR world gets a bad rap from sci-fi stories. Brain surgery is awfully risky though.. I'll have to wait for the next generation of technology before signing up. :) |
