Police: 1981 Murder of Son of America's Most Wanted Anchor John Walsh Is Solved

Tuesday , December 16, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. —
The investigation into the 1981 murder of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of "America's Most Wanted" anchor John Walsh, is finally closed.

Hollywood, Fla., Police Chief Chad Wagner announced Tuesday that the department had concluded that Ottis Toole, a serial killer who died in jail in 1996, was the man who kidnapped and decapitated the young boy.

The announcement brought to a close a case that had angered the Walsh family for more than two decades, inspired the television show about the nation's most notorious criminals and triggered changes in how authorities search for missing children.

"Who could take a 6-year-old and murder and decapitate him? Who?" an emotional John Walsh said at Tuesday's news conference. "We needed to know. We needed to know. And today we know."

The Twisted Life of Serial Killer Ottis Elwood Toole

Adam disappeared from a Hollywood mall on July 27, 1981. Two weeks later, fishermen discovered his severed head in a canal 120 miles away. The rest of his body was never found.

Toole confessed twice to the boy's murder, but he had confessed to hundreds of other killings, and police determined most of those confessions were lies.

Officials were never able to verify his confessions because of a series of errors they made in the investigation, including losing the bloodstained carpeting from Toole's car — preventing DNA testing — and losing the car itself.

Toole's niece later told Walsh that her uncle gave a deathbed confession to Adam's murder in September 1996.

Wagner acknowledged and apologized for the mistakes that were made in the investigation, but he said detectives were always led back to Toole.

"Our agency has devoted an inordinate amount of time seeking leads to other potential perpetrators rather than emphasizing Ottis Toole as our primary suspect," he said. "Ottis Toole has continued to be our only real suspect."

For all that went wrong in the probe, the case contributed to massive advances in police searches for missing children.

Adam's death, and his father's subsequent activism, helped put faces on milk cartons, started fingerprinting programs, increased security at schools and stores and spurred the creation of missing persons units at every large police department.

It also prompted legislation to create a national center, database and toll-free line devoted to missing children, and led to the start of "America's Most Wanted," which brought those cases into millions of homes.

With the case now closed, Wagner said he hoped the Walsh family could find some closure.

"The not knowing has been a torture, but that journey's over." John Walsh said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
I was absolutely amazed to hear of this. I cannot imagine what it would feel like to not have that closure for so many years. I remember the story(though vaguely) when I was a child, I recall watching the movie about it as well.

It is impossible however to understand how knowing could possibly heal the wound of a murdered child. I wonder how the family can accept the murderers plea as truth now when it has been offered in the past. It is somewhat mind boggling to myself that in the final throes of death Ottis Toole's disclosure is now accepted so readily. Any thoughts on this? Of course, I imagine more information will be offered shortly which would clarify this further.

No see I do not feel that this was truly solved. I am sorry they had this guy for how many years (he has been dead for 12) and now all of the sudden they are saying it is him with no new evidence. I mean why now, I want to know who is benifiting from making the announcement now. The Walshs have always said they belived that Toole had done it so for them it is not closure but, in my opinion, a slap in the face.

Because all of the sudden the police are like ,ok sure he did it whoo hoo way to go team we solved it, but in reality, that announcement could have been made in 1996 because nothing has changed in 12 years.

I'm in agreement with special_k

Supposedly a confession on a deathbed is new evidence. He confessed several times before that but even then the police didn't believe him.

This just smells to me.

This article and news is BS. It is on Digg and people are questioning why it is posted and I totally agree. All the police are doing is saying "ok fine, he probably did it." Except now it's supposed to be official? Stupid.

I have been saying since yesterday that I didnt understand this whole thing. There is nothing new here, they just want to "close" the case. It keeps being touted as "case solved" but there is nothing at all different today than 2 days ago.

John Walsh is an amazing amazing man and Im just sorry there will never be 100% closure for he and his family on this.

What has changed was either a new police chief or sheriff, I can't recall which. Whoever it is, reviewed the case in its entireity and made the pronouncement. Heard the report last night on CNN. CNN made it sound like a bungled investigation, specifically losing the car. DNA testing at the time was not as sophisticated as it is now. It pointed to Toole but wasn't 100% accurate. In addition to Toole's confessions, he even took investigators to the canal where the boys decaptiated head was later found!

If the Walsh family wishes to accept this as closure, then I think it is solved.

RIP Adam

I'm OK with that, too.

What's always bothered me about this case (well, besides the fact that the boy was murdered, obviously), is... how the HELL do you lose a CAR? Seriously.
