In Minneapolis this weekend - any advice?
12/5 and 12/6 - Staying down by Nicolette Mall. Good restaurants or bars? Might try and see a Timberwolves game, any advice on best way to buy a ticket - scalpers or buy from official source before hand?
Thanks in advance! |
I used to live in minneapolis.
First of all most scalpers have better tickets and prices but if you get caught you can get a fine. Wolves tickets aren't that hard to get anyway but it's your call. I've never gotten caught :-) As far as bars, O'Donovan's on first ave has the best wings and good irish beers like murphy's and guinness. That'd be high on the list, especially if you go to the target center b/c it's practically across the street. If you like good, strong drinks go to the red dragon off of nicollet in uptown and get one of their "wonderous" drinks (one is seven bucks, but if you can drink more than two and still stand up you are a better (wo)man than I). Rock Bottom Brewery off of LaSalle is pretty good for food and microbrew...if you like concerts, there are few better concert venues anywhere than 1st ave...if you like dive bars that make 'em cheap and strong go catch a cab to Shaws in North minneapolis off of i think 22nd and University. While you're up there stop by Gasthof (also in North) for a beer-fest style boot full of beer and complementary snuff (if they still do that). Do yourself a favor and don't go to the Mall of America...unless you REALLY REALLY like shopping it's a waste of time. |
I enjoyed my visits to the Mall of America. Sure, it's a retail overdose but I still had fun.

A minor correction: The Red Dragon is on Lyndale.
I'd offer to show you around, but I've got a couple research/lab reports to write. The Timberwolves don't sell out by a long shot, so you shouldn't have to deal with scalpers. Minneapolis has many wonderful and culturally significant places to get drunk, if that's your thing. There's First Ave, which is notable among the locals primarily because famous musicians used to play there. There's Nye's Pollonaise Room, which Esquire called the best bar in America (I think it was Esquire). There's the aforementioned Red Dragon, where I had my first legal drink; it's kind of a dump, but they serve real booze. You'll be here for the Hollidazzle Parade down Nicollet Mall. This is where Minneapolitans get together a pretend that sitting still outside in the dead of winter is fun. You could skip the largest mall in the US and instead wander around the FIRST mall in the US. Not only is Southdale less crowded, but its theater is far superior to the one at the MOA. There are also museums: The Science Museum, The Mineapolis Institute of Art, The Weismann. There is a very diverse collection of ethnic restaurants called "Eat Street" (A goofy, but accurate name). I recommend Jasmine Deli, Quang's and Tacos Morellos. Hope you have a nice weekend. |
Brits Pub. It's on Nicolett and. . i think either 7th or 11th. Been awhile since I was there. Right across from Orchestra Hall. Get the chicken pot pie or the shepherd's pie.

Wow, thanks for the great advice. Never been to an NBA game, sounds like it is best just to buy the tickets through the official source. I do like the drinking so thanks for that. Also, I hope to run into Paul Westerburg, ha ha.

All very good suggestions from the MN peeps! Red Dragon is my fav! Since you will be right down town, if you are looking for amazing food (but a little pricey) Ichiban's Japanese Steak House is right there on Nicollett Mall.
And FYI...scalping in MN is legal now I believe. But the previous responders are correct....most MN sports don't have sell out problems. |
I have been to the twin cities many times and I have found the food to be very good. If you like BBQ you might check out the Market and for great steak try Murries, "I didn't spell that right but it"s right downtown near the Target Center. I just hope it's still there as so many of the older resturants have fallen by the wayside like Charlies. Good luck and have fun at the game.

Thanks to everyone. Ended up going to Timberwolves game. Bought cheap seats, and a rep from the team came by and gave us tickets for seats about 15 rows back. Glad I didn't buy more expensive tickets.
