Apparently at least one person got death:

Wal-Mart worker dies after shoppers knock him down

Print By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer Colleen Long, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 35 mins ago AFP/File

NEW YORK – A worker died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers when a suburban Wal-Mart opened for the holiday sales rush Friday, authorities said.

At least three other people were injured.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede but said a "medical emergency" had caused the company to close the store, which is in Valley Stream on Long Island.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m., an hour after the store opened. The cause of death was not immediately known.

A police statement said shortly after 5 a.m., a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground." Police also said a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation and three other shoppers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospitals.

The dead worker's name was not released.

"Local authorities are looking into the situation," said Wal-Mart representative Dan Fogleman. But he said it would be "inappropriate for me to share any additional information" until authorities investigate further.

Shoppers around the country lined up early outside stores in the annual bargain hunting ritual known as Black Friday. Many stores open early and stay open late. The Valley Stream Wal-Mart usually opens at 9 a.m.

That is horrible. Every time I see video of Walmart opening for black Friday i get disgusted. They just open the doors and everyone stampedes in (stampede being the correct word because most of the people are highly overweight woman). I went to a black friday sale last year at circuit city and they only let a few people in at a time. This is the way all stores should do it. Limit the sales to 1 per customer and then let them in a few at a time. There is no reason to create this type of situation. Walmart will likely get sued for this because they were negligent in creating a harmful situation. I hope companies learn from this.

I had a Garmin 705 that I used for running (I think it's the same model - this was a wrist watch model, so maybe its different...might have been a 305?)...in any case, it worked beautifully until I switched to Vista. Then the software crapped out. That may have been fixed by now. Then one day when I was out running, it just sort of popped apart in the middle of the street. It was out of warranty, and I'd purchased it at discount on Ebay...so I was just sort of screwed. In any case, I don't know this is common, but I thought it was something to be aware of. I will say that it had no problems keeping track of positioning, even when I was doing 65 in a car...if you want to keep track of your time/pace/routes, t does a pretty good job. I wouldn't use it for hiking.

I woke up at 6 for some odd reason and my son and I decided to brave wal-mart, since we had to get pet food.

Needless to say, the cashiers were severely bored.

I didn't waste any money on stuff I didn't need (which surprised me!).

I got:
Big bag of cat food - 10 ish dollars
Big bag of dog food - 10 ish dollars
BIG ASS beef bone for the dog (though the cats are biting on it also) - 8 ish dollars
Child's winter jacket for Mack - 8 dollars (yes!)
Men's skull hoodie for Mack - 8 dollars (originally 17. Oh yes)

I bought other stuff, but nothing to do with black friday, and not at wal-mart.

for my sins, that last bottle of wine in particular, i had delivered unto me a new pet hangover. so i took my new pet hangover for a walk. it argued with me about the advisability of eating a tuna melt, but i ignored it. it talks too much. and i found a copy of frank lowe's "black beings" a fantastic 1972 concert recording of fire music.
now my ill-tempered and stinky pet hangover and i are going to the library.
i don't do black friday.

I'm interested to see the stats on today and how they compare to other years. According to the preliminary reports, it appears there are still many out there who haven't figured out how to save money. Don't they know there is an economic crisis going on now?

The last I checked, the average savings rate is still negative.

How long can it go on?

Other than that, it looks like a good day for deals. I just don't know about people buying things they don't need when they have uncontrollable debt.

But, hey, if you have your finances under control, go nuts. Why not, if the deals are that good?

If I were American, I wouldn't do Black Friday. I think it's the worst time to go shopping. I can't stand Wal-Mart on a regular day, let alone the crap I've seen in the news.

I like reading about the great deals you guys are getting.

Online shopping is the only way to go black Friday...no lines, no hassles. I got some clothes half off the clearance price and $25 off my $75 purchase. I also bought a GPS online for around $80 shipped after a $25 off $100 coupon.

I work retail though and the last thing I want to do after work is go to another store and deal with other customers and lines without getting paid for it.

I have never participated in "black Friday" before. Today, I went to Target and bought a 750GB Western Digital external hard drive for $95 after tax. I didn't wait in line - I got there at 6am when the store opened.

Hmm, was going to call a tie with the person working at the seedy bar. But in this case I'd tie goes to the naked couple in bed.

Though if I know anything about seedy bars south of the border...

Oh, almost forgot. I didn't get anything... had to pay $25 and pick up the trash.

I got stuck in traffic coming home from my sister-in-laws. and I'd do it again just to avoid Black Friday. To me, the sales are just not worth the aggravation. I'd rather get things online.

"What'd I get?"
"I'll tell you what I didn't get. Trampled to death at Wal-Mart."

Really though that's being an ass to the poor sap that Wal-Mart had opening the door. I agree with you. I hope all those idiots who stampeded in feel fucking great about their shopping experience.

We bought a television, the flat ones with all the letters in the description...... Anyway, this morning one of my beloved felines tried to jump on top of it. He's 20 pounds, but quite agile. Red and I have never moved so fast as we watched the less than a day old much desired entertainment box weeble and wobble before our lovely Baxter freaked, jumped and ran. It seems like it took forever, but the entire incident lasted only seconds. And it really wasn't his fault. Periodically, Baxter would jump on our former non-flat TV and we would talk about how cute it was. The TV survived with only minor kitty christening scratches on the edge, and the screen was unscathed. How, I don't know. 20 pounds of desperate kitty left no scratches. Maybe he was just messin with us. Or, maybe he's a Bama fan. Damn good stand on this thing.

A shop near me advertised a "25% off everything day" so I went along to buy a nice glass vase. When I got there I discovered the one I wanted was already marked "50% off". So I take it along to the till to pay and they took another 25% off! As they are wrapping it up I see a notice saying that if I sign up for a store card they would take 10% off my purchases for a day. After all the reductions another 10% was hardly worth bothering with but I'm not one to turn down free money. Purchases on the card were "interest free" for 30 days so I figure I'll cut the card up when I get home. Then just as I was leaving store there was a announcement on the PA system that said if you paid off your store card in full that day at the customer service desk they would give you 2% off your card bill! So up the stairs I go two at a time to pay off my card which I then have them cut up for me. Somebody pinch me.
