The unofficial Presidential pardon list

List of people pardoned or clemenced by a United States president - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notable pardons or sentences commuted of the past five Presidents:

Jimmy Carter: G. Gordon Liddy (commuted); anybody who avoided the draft during the Vietnam War; Patty Hearst (commuted); Jefferson Davis

Ronald Regan: George Steinbrenner

George H.W. Bush: Caspar Weinberger, Elliott Abrams, Robert McFarlaine (all three were convicted on charges relating to the Iran Contra scandal)

Bill Clinton: Roger Clinton; Patty Hearst (pardon); Marc Rich (pardoned after becoming a fugitive)

George W. Bush: ?????

My first guess will be that of Scooter Libby, convicted of charges relating to the imfamous leaking of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame to the media.

Feel free to add to the list of those who might be pardoned.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't pardon himself and Cheney for any possible crimes regarding torture. Hell, I wouldn't put it past him to make a blanket pardon covering anyone involved in any criminal activities such as torture or renditions etc...

Don't forget Karl Rove! He's still facing contempt of congress charges for ignoring that congressional subpoena.

They should send somebody to Fox News to round him live on air.

Wasn't this proved unlawful under Nixon? He resigned in favour of Ford, and then Ford pardoned him.

Personally, I find Presidential pardons the least democratic thing ever - you kiss ass for a while and when the failure gets turfed out, he gives you a free pass?

I'm no attorney, don't even play one on TV. But from what I understand he could indeed pardon himself. As long as he wasn't impeached. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution states-

"The President ... shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment."

I think for him to pardon himself he'd have to admit he committed a crime, again I could be wrong. That might stop him as I don't see him ever admitting to anything.

I'd wonder if admitting he wa a criminal would preclude him having the power to grant a pardon?

So the question is, will he pardon the Senator from Alaska who's name escapes me.

Some what of a chicken and the egg type legal question. I'm sure I don't know the answer. My guess is you could asked 10 attorneys and get at least 4 answers.

After seeing the list of Clinton's pardons I wouldn't be surprised by anything or anyone.

So, the list of possible candidates for pardoning so far:

Scooter Libby
Dick Cheney
Karl Rove
Ted Stevens

Is Tom DeLay still under indictment for the whole Jack Abramoff thing? Speaking of Abramoff...

I think that is more in the sense of being able to pardon someone who was impeached, and therefore keep them in their position.

It could be, I just don't know. Again I'm not legal junkie or expert. We have a few around here I'd love to get them involved here.

I do know it seems to me there's the long standing interpretation of the US Constitution and it's laws and then there's the Bush interpretations. The two seem to have a lot of space between them. Bush has as many new way to define laws and the Constitution as Clinton did with the word "is."

The buzz from Canada is if Conrad Black will be pardoned(newspaper baron).

Be a hoot if OJ got pardoned.

Thankfully no charges against Spitzer.Instead of a slap on the wrist, he would have requested it on the ass. And by a hooker.
