Canada: Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey all you TFP'ers from north of the 49th Parallel... It that time of year again, the second Monday in October is traditionally Thanksgiving. What are your plans.

I've already bought my turkey, and it will go into the brine on Sunday evening, so that it cooks nice and jucy for Monday's dinner. Also on the menu will be roasted parsnips, turnips and carrots, mashed garlic sweet potatoes & potatoes mixed, sage stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie & apple pie for dessert.

We're going to my sister's place in my hometown, where the rest of my family will be (except my older brother, who will be with his wife in her hometown this year).

We'll have traditional stuff mainly, plus some of our personal favourites, such as green bean & mushroom casserole.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

My friends and I had a potluck last night. We had a great ham, my buddy made a kick ass from scratch pumpkin pie. Unfortunately we've had some passings in our family and thus it will be a fairly somber weekend.

Mmmmmm Turkey. Going to the GF's family on Sunday. Unfortunately my folks are renovating their house so no doubling up on Turkey dinners this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sadly, for the second year running, I will be away from my family for Thanksgiving. The wife and kids are home while I am in the south of France...

OK, maybe that isn't sad, per se.

That said, we started a tradition of Thanksmas last year... it takes place in November (before that pretend Thanksgiving they celebrate south of Canada) and before Christmas. Too many of the teachers at the Canadian school missed Thanksgiving in October because they were travelling and would not be around for Christmas... so Thanksmas was born.

Plans are already underway. So far the list looks like it has over 20 people. How the fuck am I going to cook for over 20 people?

I'm rambling.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Eat some turkey and breathe some fall air for me.

Had the big family feast yesterday - turkey, ham, roast potatoes, cranberry, veggies, cakes and pies, and, of course, beer and wine. Nothing like multigenerational home cooking!

And Google remembered us today! We're so lucky ...

I ate four different kinds of pie: bumbleberry, apple, apple crisp, and pumpkin.

I used both regular whipped cream and chocolate whipped cream.

I'm just about done until Christmas dinner.

Had two pies: Apple & Pumpkin. Both with whipped cream, and one with cheddar cheese (can you guess which?).

Also spent the day doing yard work, transitioning the garden furniture and lawnmore for the snowblower and the firewood. Sure it was hot (25 with a humidex of 29) but that aint gonna last is it? I mean, 10 cm of snow in Regina????

Also on the menu will be roasted parsnips (yes!) , turnips and galzed baby carrots, mashed garlic sweet potatoes & potatoes mixed, sage stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce. Pumpkin pie & apple pie for dessert.

Additionally will be lots of micro beer & Niagara wine. Also going to try some of the fruit wines from the Kawartha's.

An interesting time this year:

On Saturday, we're having a buffet dinner in honour of my mother's 60th birthday (which was earlier this week).

On Sunday, we're having our first Thanksgiving dinner at my brother's place. It will be the second time seeing my new(ish) nephew.

On Monday, we'll be feasting yet again, this time on 40-cloves-of-garlic chicken, while playing some Rock Band with friends.

Happy Thanksgiving, Canadian TFPers!

I'm down in San Francisco.....It's was about 20 C today here. I think TO was about 11 with rain. It's funny seeing miles and temperaturs in farenheight again. I've lost my feels for miles and F. Though I still have it for inches and feet. Go figure.. Apparently it never snows in SF. They have old style parking meters on the street, so I was forced to pay large to park my rental in a garage downtown. The streets here make no sense. They go every which way. No-one references directions with north south east or west like we do in TO. You have to be VERY careful when driving downtown because the stop lights are at the sides of the streets. (Almost drove right through a red. Whoops). There is a bit of an accent here as well. Went on a walking tour of Architecture. Saw lots of Banks. Banks built some pretty impressive monuments here way back when. Warren Harding died in SF. (Who knew.) I like SF, but TO seems a better town (Im biased) because in TO, you have people living downtown. I mean you can turn off any major street and you're immediately right into single family homes. Not so here. It's very commercial. Though there are throngs of people (during the day) everywhere. People are friendly. Not as multicultural as TO either. Had lunch in Chinatown. Funny thing eating in a city where don't know a thing - you have no idea where to eat. (Not into fast food). So I picked this Chinese Restaurant - wait for it......,"The Chinatown Restaurant" Food was good - had some noodle dish and some spring rolls. Couldn't finish it all - stuffed. Bill was 20 bucks. My fortune cookie said, "You need to improve your exercise regime" Seriously. LOL, not like the BS fortune cookies we get on Spadina that always tell you what great guy you are, or how rich you will be soon. No, "You need to improve your excercise regime" Probably true. Still found it funny though. Oh, and for some reason, the cars are all new and very clean. Also, I've noticed that the houses don't have basements.

They don't really know that it's really Thanksgiving, so they have this thing called Columbus Day. I guess the Americans decided that they needed a holiday in October too so they copied us again.

I wonder if they have Columbus Day Turkey?

No thanksgiving meal for us. My wife is in Cambodia for the week. We will, however, celebrate our third annual Thanksmas this November. I've started to plan.

Charlatan, I saw a CBC news thingy once that featured fast food in Indochina. Showed some hot young office girls in downtown Phnom Pehn stopped at a traffic light, ordering food from a street seller: Deep fired tarantulas. A pile of them in a newspaper roll.

Maybe your wife can bring back some special Thanksgiving chicken-fried tarantulas, with all the trimmings!

JTK: interesting comparison. I heard that SF was famous for chocolate and micro breweries.... a pretty good combo in spite of it other shortcomings!

So last year, your big trial was to be in the south of France for Thanksgiving. This year your wife is in Cambodia.

If I were her, you'd be looking at a divorce buster. And I'd have to explain my sex change to my doctor.

It's a cool town. Going on another walking tour shortly - if I can find the damn meeting place. I wish they'd give you an address.

Other observations about SF:

No Tim Hortons - guess that goes without saying, but they would come in handy.

Not much fast food of any kind. Walked up Market street which is their eqivalent of Yonge Street and did not spot any golden arches or other bS.

Traffic on streets is very heavy. Much heavier than T.O. And everyone is on the horn for some reason.

They have street cars, electric buses, and cable cars. Old street cars too. Like the famous Red Rocket era cars. But they are cool in my books, though probably too small for Toronto.

Lots of public spaces on top of buildings that you can hang out in downtown.

BART vs. the TTC.

So far, I could live here. This is not Jesusland by a long shot.

For the past few years it's been the same, I go to France and she goes to Cambodia. My trip to France was this week just past.

She builds houses and volunteers her teaching skill at schools, while I go and make the world safe for more Television. If the divorce is coming it probably has more to do with the shallowness of my business than anything else.

She's definitely the one doing the right thing for Thanksgiving.

My wife is back from a three week business trip so it's nice to be all together again; except that we're all getting over colds and fevers. I wonder if one cold will do battle with another or if they both join together to form super-cold. Bleargh.

It's the annual family golf tournament on Monday, but otherwise we're having a low key couple of days. I hope we get out for a nice walk in the woods.

Thanksgiving 2010! It's here! I'm going to be joining my sister-in-law's family at the Stoney Lake cottage for a weekend of naturey stuff, turkey dinner, bonfires, and the annual "taking-the-boat-out-of-the-water-and-storing-in-the-marina" ritual. At least the weather in these parts is supposed to be magnificent.

What of other Canuckian TFP-ers? how are you spending the long weekend?

& Happy Thanksgiving! - first weekend of regular season NHL hockey as well.
