Latest Palin scandal - Extra Marital Affair?

McCain Camp Knocks Down Enquirer's Palin Rumor

(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

The Enquirer also alleges that Palin unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska, but the story is based entirely on unnamed sources. The Enquirer has also paid sources in the past to speak with them, something mainstream media outlets do not do.

“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.

“Legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

Wow, yet another scandal. I know it came from the National Enquirer so must be taken with a grain of salt but geez, this is getting insane. The poor woman is being hammered.

I read an editorial in the Toronto Sun this morning discussing the pick of Palin by the McCain campaign as a VP candidate. Apparently - if you are to believe what we read, the decision was made in less than 36 hours with the vetting process being extremely quick.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the RNC back rooms and see what is being said about this pick. It was a gutsy move for sure, but I think it will ultimately sink this campaign. She has waaaay too much excess baggage going on and will not give the campaign the boost he needs.

Then again I could be wrong, the press may get bored with this after a week or two and will be forgotten.

Heh... wow. Well, the Enquirer did wind up being correct about John Edwards, no?

Yeah, there probably isn't that much truth to this. Disregarding this, there's still a lot about Palin that's quite bothersome regarding her alleged professional behavior and qualifications.

I think that's exactly what's going to happen. Just three days ago a hurricane was hitting New Orleans, and as fortunate as the Gulf Coast is that there wasn't devastation like as was seen in Katrina, there's still a lot of ill-effects there that I think most of the country has basically moved on from.

Even the National Enquirer can't publish baseless libel, especially about a major national candidate. And if they have, they deserve to get their asses handed to them in court. We'll know it's baseless libel if the McCain campaign actually PURSUES legal action rather than just threatening to consider it. I can threaten to consider flapping my wings and flying to the moon.

It's more than pursuing, if there's no chance of actually winning a libel case, then even if they know that it is libelous but cannot reasonable prove damages, what's the point?

To show that they KNOW the story to be false, rather than just POSTURING LOUDLY that the story is false.

How is that posturing?

There's no "allegedly", "suspicion" it's labeled as false.

Also, there's no damages until she loses the election, so what is the expectation now? file suit immediately? seems like a waste of time, resources, and money.

Whatever...

Either they have someone claiming they slept with her because they don't like her, or they have heard so many people say 'I'd hit it', that they figure someone has.

Or maybe the lab test for the youngest baby proved that the Dad couldn't be the Dad... I don't know, but the Enquirer better know it is true and has rock solid proof to put something like this out there.

The Enquirer isn't quite the fish-wrap it used to be. They don't do Bigfoot, and they don't have BatBoy. They've aimed at celebrites but they tend to publish things that are grounded in fact. I actually believed them about Edwards before he admitted it since they seemed to have the goods on him.

Thus far they aren't tipping their hand on where the info is coming from, but I don't necessarily reject this as being false simply because of who is publishing it. And if she did cheat on her husband, that's going to cause a serious problem for McCain.

This is about the whole banning of "If You Give A Moose a Muffin" from the Wassamacallit town library, isn't it? She gave her muffin to an unauthorized moose.

Condoms are against your religion? What are you, babycakes? Catholic? OK, turn over then. Yeah, I'd still hit it.

Seriously, for a moment:
You can't discuss issues about Palin because she fails on every single issue, grossly and obviously. She reads one heck of a teleprompter, though, even if she does sound like Fran Drescher on Quaaludes. She is an empty suit with a full bra and richly deserves ridicule. The Republicans will steadfastly defend her until it becomes so abundantly clear that a eukaryote could see that by choosing her John McCain was either pandering in the worst way or displaying bad judgment right out of Sophocles or both, and then they will drop her like infectious medical waste.

So talking issues is a waste of time. She has none.

Talking issues about McCain is for another thread.

Thanks, Will.

The problem is, with her running for a leadership position in the country, her beliefs can translate into laws for everyone in the country, and she has made clear that she believes they should. So she believes in abstinence and should be abstinent? That works wonderfully if you can support 5 kids, one with another on the way. Not so well if you can't but stil want to deploy your naughty bits now and again. So doesn't have to get an abortion, this is true, but she is a member of that group of folks who believe what is right for them is right for everyone.

to you, Tophat. Will, the problem with your statement is that it assumes she won't be one cardiac arrest away from becoming the next POTUS--it assumes that she is just your average American woman, who can do whatever she wants with her reproductive organs, and that it won't affect anyone else. Hello, she's running to be VP! And even while McCain is alive and well, she'll most likely do all she can to put her agenda through. That's what being a politician is all about--she's not a moral relativist, okay? Her morals ought to be everyone's morals. Do you want someone like that in office?

This could be a coincidence but apparently the business partner just filed an emergency motion to have his divorce papers sealed and it looks like it was denied.

I'm not sure if this is the alleged business partner or not but it will definitely keep the rumor mill churning.

That is contrary to what I've read. Did you have a source for that or were you just assuming due to her political party?

Actually, maybe not so much. Maybe as little as 10 years ago... I imagine that Joe still enjoys his personal time with her, as he would see her as she was in 1977 ... but for me, not so much. More on par with Laura Bush than Cindy McCain.

Normal commute to Fairfax: 45 minutes.

Commute on the day of the McCain Rally (today): 2 hours, 30 minutes.

Another reason I'm not voting for McCain.

OUCH! My sympathies. I haven't had a commute like that since the big snow a couple of years ago wot make my sneaky back route (Vale Rd.) impassible about three quarters of the way along. These days, out in Reston, unless you're plausibly deniable you might as well be in flyover country.

For this, I figure one could part over around Blake Lane and hoof it to a likely bar.

cindy mccain circa 2000 with a full head of salt'n'pepper rather than peroxide might dissuade you of that notion.

The thing about Palin is, after a couple more rounds of "Thanks but nooo thanks," v. "That's just not the way it happened," enough people will get around to calling a spade a spade (and I can say that about the McCain Campaign with a clear conscience) and she'll be accurately termed a Liar (and less accurately lampooned as a pathological one). Once that happens, all that it will take to make any smear stick to her is for her to deny it.

You can put lipstick on a pitbull, but that won't make it a lady.
