I've never ever driven under the influence of drugs and have limited myself to a single beer. Even then it will be the early in the evening and hours before I drive. I don't even do that anymore. Taking risks with my own life is one thing, involving others is unacceptable. I'm not sure I could live with myself had I been the guy who caused this.

I hope this young lady can find joy and happiness in her life. There were two others in the accident who won't have the chance.

I seriously wish we had drunk driving laws like germany. I met a foreign exchange student that went to a getogether with his parents when he was 12 and they had a little to drink so they made him drive home because if he got caught, it would've been way less punishment than if they got caught.

I think the reason we have such a problem with it here is that people aren't that afraid of the consequences. Most people don't even think they're bad drivers when they're drunk.

I realize that the government would say such laws would be unconstitutional or some crap like that, but I think it would be a hell of a lot better than so many innocent people dying. I think Germany got it right on that one.

How can you honestly just sit there and comment about her appreance, yes it is rather graphic and sad...but she has to deal with that everyday because of a drunk driver.

But you guys don't have enough of a consience to give a damn. I actually feel sorry for this young lady, she had a very promising life ahead of her and although still full of potential we all know that this young girl will not go anywhere in life because the views of people.

Also, if you can look at this and still take the risk, there's no hope for you at all.

wow.. im left speechless.. I am glad I refuse to drink and drive, but it still appalls (spelling?) that some of my friends still do it and enjoy it.. it is even worse that one of them even thinks he drives better while drunk..

it is a sad state we live in where people dont even take into consideration that they are putting so many other lives in danger when they do that.

rogue said exactly what I was thinking. It's sad that the lack of responsibility of others can have such a negative impact on the lives of others.

I know I look at things differently then others do.

I know that sometimes my comments are perceived as cruel.

But I don't mean them that way.

I could easily be this girl; as could anyone else on this board. It's wrong place at the wrong time stuff for some people, for others, like myself, sometimes you have rolled the dice one too many times - and this kind of outcome could catch up with you.

I see or read stuff like this and I make a light comment to myself about it. When it probably doesn't deserve a light comment. But that's how I deal with shit that happens in the world that there is no explanation for. With humor that is probably not warranted. But that's, like I said, how I choose to look at things that seem to not have an easy explanation in the "why" category.

In short, I don't ever aim to offend. That would take away from when I have something to say I'd like you all to read. I sorry if you were offended by my post: I'm not trying to be that guy. If my comment made you upset, I apologize.

I wanted to post this a few weeks back, but I thought it be better served to allow someone else to put it up so it was just a matter of time.

I for one do not drink and drive in any shape or form. I do not want to burden my conscience with someone else's life. It was really difficult for me in high school because I was the designated driver every weekend. I didn't drink until I got home because I wanted to make sure that I arrived alive.

Kudos to the strength that this woman has to give her image to everyone out in the world to remind them that regardless of drinking and driving, it's about driving carefully period.

I did an "empirical study on the effects of alcohol on my body" when I was 21. I wanted to try to conciously observe the changes in my mind and body as I became drunk. It instilled within me a completely unbreakable decision to never ever drive drunk.

If I can't walk in a straight line, there's no way in hell I'd be able to drive successfully.

I but wish more people would realize that.

I don't think any of us should need to see a picture to know that drunk driving isn't a good idea. Sigh.

I think we have the technology to develope cars that can drive themselves. I hope when I'm 70 there will be no more human drivers on the road. I mean 50,000+ people shit the bed in car accidents everyyear and nobody it really doing anything about it. Hell in 96 one college drove from the east coast to the west coast and the car steared 95% of the trip with use of computers and cameras, whats happened since?. Drunks will still drive wether they have a licence or not. Thats a fact. Judges are just too easy on them.

Hmmm. They should bring back the CONTRACT FOR SAFE DRIVING from the eighties. It says the if the parents are too drunk to drive, they'll call a cab. And if the kids are too drunk, they'll call their parents. It was such a good idea.

Wish i had read this a year ago before i got done. There are SO many young people doing it here...

Drunk drivers who get into an accident should be shot on the spot.

I wish I'd seen that before I got hauled in for DUI/DWI all those times. If I hadn't already quit doing that by now, this would have made me.

Tragic. Her story is a familiar one to me, as my command's Safety Petty Officer, I had to use this as a training lecture about DUI. Only an idiot would debate the stupidity of driving drunk or while high.

However, I'll tell you all what I told my troops. This sort of thing happens a lot more often than we realize to people who get into car accidents that have nothing at all to do with alcohol. People who get distracted while on cell phones, who drive at irresponsible and excessive speeds, who run red lights, or roll their SUV's by driving them improperly, that drive long distances with little to no rest and fall asleep at the wheel, who speed on wet roads, etc. They just as easily hit innocent victims who get trapped in burning cars and suffer severe disfigurement.

There aren't any powerpoint demonstrations about those people, though.

I think driving under the influence is one of the single worst things a person can do. It is so incredibly stupid and can ruin not only your life but the lives of others.

I have been hit by drunk drivers twice in my life and both times it was really traumatic and I was lucky enough not to get seriously hurt either time.

There is something about seeing your mother having to be cut out of a car that really messes with you. Luckily she was not seriously hurt either but even though in a few days it will be ten years since it happened, every time I hear screetching brakes it scares the hell out of me.

So my heart goes out to all of the victims especially the ones who are hurt so badly.

Thanks for pointing this out Mikey. This is one subject that I really take seriously, and would like to somehow make more people think about to drive safely. I myself have pulled some of those long hauls with little (no) rest, and although nothing bad happened, I realize now how unsafe that was.

I plead with people to keep their speed down and pay full attantion to your driving, at all times. And of course NO DUI ever.

My father was run down by a drunk driver in Mexico while on a construction job. An American tourist. She never once called, wrote, or aplogized in any way. As far as I know, she wasn't even punished because it happened in Mexico.

So next time someone says "drunk driving isn't a big deal" or "traffic laws are pointless", punch them right in the face for me. My dad was 37. Perfect health. Then dead.

I'm sure that will stop a few people from drinking and driving.

As for me, I take that extra $20-$50 out with me so I can take a cab home. Definitely worth it.

I think its sick that this has happened. To many people think drunk driving is a joke. In 1987 I was hit head on by a drunk driver. He was so drunk his so called friends carried him to the car because he couldnt standup. He was in my town because he was skipping a court apperence for a different drunk driving charge. Best of all he was only 17. When he got done going to court. He got a $500 fine and 200 hours of comunity service, and six moth loss of his license, this is the TOTAL he got from both DWI charges. At the time of the acident I didnt drink and I still dont. I am fine with the fact that others want to drink get stoned etc etc etc. Thats fine and great. But when you get behind a whel of a car the brings me into the picture, and that I do not agree with. The guy that kills two people and badly disfigures a pretty young SMART girl, and ONLY yes I said ONLY gets 7 years and a $20,000 fine? Thats almost as sick as it is that he would even get in a car drunk. 3 innocent people got a life sentence. He can still live his live and be thankful..he was just derailed for a few years. I think what she is doing takes alot of courage and I gotta give her credit big time for that! I wish her the best, and if it keeps one more drunk driver off the road she has done more than most of us have.

I see that too often. She reminds me of every bald man i've ever seen.

My initial reaction was just that. I wasn't trying to be insensitive at all. I'm the type of person that gets sick when I hit a squirrel driving. I just have a weak stomach, and just couldn't bear to continue. I feel very strongly against drunk driving, having lost a couple friends (they were both passengers) to such incidents. I genuinely feel disgusted that things like this happen. Beautiful people having their lives ruined. If you feel my 'nasty' comment was offending, then good, because I was only being honest, and if you can't handle my honesty, I don't feel your reaction can possible be honest.
