Filing w/ IRS for 501(c)(3) status?
Does anyone know how this is done? I'm planning on expanding my efforts for donations for deployed troops. Currently, I've registered Games For Soldiers and will be tracking donations regardless. This will allow people who donate to see where their donations go and for us to track fun (read: useless) data about where donations come from. Anyone who can help with this would be appreciated. Anyone that might want to help with some PHP coding for a rather short-term project would also be appreciated.
Thanks!

I recently spoke to my accountant for this very same thing. We'd like to start a non-profit organization. It's not a difficult process to do the paperwork, but since I'm not an accountant, I felt more comfortable letting my accountant do the work and paying him for his services. This also leads to the benefit of him knowing already that everything is registered and setup correctly and not having to fix something done incorrectly.
You can stay as a not-for-profit business without filing, the difference of course is that you cannot say that the donations are tax deductable.

Of course. And I'm not 100% sure that it's worth going this extra step for a donation-driven but who-knows-how-long-term business At any rate, it's good to know it doesn't require mountains of paperwork. Perhaps I'll hook up with an accountant and figure some stuff out. Thanks!

I think we paid $750 to incorporate and the 501 would be about the same. You maybe able to find someone sympathetic to your cause and maybe willing to donate a portion of the time if you did the paperwork/legwork and they just looked it over.
Yes, I know I could have filed myself in Delaware for $99, but again, it was a matter of making sure that it was done correctly and without any issues. Now we have a cool document of incorporation and corporate seal!!!
