Why Must Banks Do This

Why must the sweet sounding girl on the phone from the bank have to tempt me with the "Is your credit limit suficient for you" question. DAMMIT I could have bought a new TV!

Tempt in what way?

The last time they threatened to raise my limit I almost paniced. They told me to pay some of it off, then.

They never ask me to increase the limit. It's always "I want, I want, I want..." not, what would YOU like. And I work at a bank.

Because they know that anyone with a problem that might require them to physically come to the bank will probably be working 9-5 five days a week. Thus, by only being open when these people are working, they avoid having the render service to them while still taking their money.

Pretty clever, actually.

Tempt me in saying yes to my credit limit being raise and allowing me to buy more stuff that I don't need.

At least she asked.

Usually those calls go: "Congratulations, Mr. Bastid, we're sending you the new Spendoolie National Bank Platinum Bastardcard, with a $30,000 credit limit and 0% introductory APR for three months. All I need to do is confirm that you live at...."

I usually have to resort to yelling "Woah, woah, woah!" at some point.

Last time I was actually in the bank, I had more trouble getting them to raise the limit on what I can take out after depositing at an ATM than I did getting a higher credit limit. I had to practically twist her arm to be able to immediately get $600 after depositing a cheque or something, while at the same time had to beat her with a stick to stop her from raising my credit limit to much, much higher levels.

Make sense of that.

My bank's terrible for business hours. It's for civil servants, so it's open even less than a government worker is at work. They're never open past 3pm. It takes weeks of planning for me to get a day off so I can go and sign a document or anything else I have to do there in person.

I think I have a combined credit limit on 2 cards of about $26,000.

What keeps me from going nuts is remembering the $500 a month payments, $450 of which was interest.

No, I'm not tempted.

I'd say Whoa! instead, meself.

They don't call me for such things; they snail mail me instead. I get that crap all the time. I just shred it and toss it in the recycling bin so it won't be a total loss. It never even gets into my apartment.

If someone called and told me what you're telling about, I'd say it's okay with me as long as they don't mind me maxing out and defaulting on the account, then challenging their entry into my credit records.

I stuff all of the contents back inside their postage paid envelope (after I write NO across the face of the application) and mail it back to them. Sometimes, if I have other stuff available from other mail I get, like envelopes, I stuff that in there too.

Simple answer to the why do banks treat me so shitty question.

Because they can. After all they are the bank and you're not.

Banks may have bad business hours but there is always the online option of dealing with them. Of course it may not take as short a time as real time communication but it's better than nothing.

Why can't they say, you owe us nothing, we'll just sweep your debt under the rug and you can start anew
