I use the Report Post button whenever spam shows up to get rid of it. In fact, I used it just now. I like the efficiency of it; I click the button, send a report and usually within a few minutes the spam has vanished as if it never were. It makes me feel as if I were an integral part of the process, even if it's likely that a moderator would spot the spam without my intervention anyway.
I do try to be somewhat creative when I report posts. Of course, clarity of the message is of utmost importance, but I like to hope that I might make some moderator or administrator smile and thus improve someone's day that little bit. It's hard to be sure of this, however, since the reports essentially end up going into a vacuum. They could be going down the forum equivalent of the garbage chute. Right into the incerator, and I'd never know the difference. My question is, what happens when I press the report post button? Where do the reports go? Who reads them? Am I allowed to know this, or is it classified information?

An email containing a link to the offending post, the thread in question, and your comments is sent to every administrator, super mod, and moderator.
If one of us is online, we'll usually jump on it right away. And yes, I laugh at your reports.

On the other hand, the report process sounds kind of.. well, spam-ish. It seems odd that I spam all of the forum staffers in order to report spam. Necessary, I suppose. Also, I'm curious to know if anyone actually will report this post as instructed. I doubt it, but ya never know....

Just kidding. Actually, we get fewer reports than you'd think. And I set up a TFP-only email address to catch stuff like that so it doesn't clutter my personal email.

Question. Response. Follow-up comment. Follow-up response.
This is one of the few threads on the site that can be said to be truly complete. It's a strangely satisfying thing.

Honestly, it's not as exciting as you'd think. If I knew anything about php I'd code a warning system that polls the userlist for online mods/admins and pops up a window when we get reports, or at least send them to a report thread/forum to be tucked in under the spambuster report forum, but I never did anything beyond visual basic.

I came here to close this thread. When it opened onto an active thread, my first thought was "either something strange happened last night to take all the mods offline or they're a bunch of lazy bastards." I'm glad to see the answer is a little more nuanced than I originally thought.
