pro, here. I say, if they're getting life in prison anyway, might as well execute the bastards and clear up some needed space in the jails. also, agreed with vermin on the "three strikes and you're screwed" principle. way too many of these people end up back on the streets...

'Advanced' societies shouldn't be killing people

Unfortunatly they do,and I feel that it is our loss in Australia that the death penalty was abolished."Hang em and hang em high" I say.

This is very interesting; I live in a state with no death penalty, Minnesota. Maybe MN is just a more liberal state than the most, despite recent electoral outcomes, but the death penalty is foolish and barbaric. Let's examine Texas, the home state of our great president, note the sarcasm...Texas executes more people every year than most other states combined, but has this stopped or even quelled the number of murders per year in Texas? Why of course not, because every study done on the subject has proven that states and countries with capital punishment have higher murder rates than states without said punishment.

Capital punishment merely demonstrates to citizens it is ok to act out violently on our neighbors and friends. This barbarianism has grown even more, now that our beloved, bumbling moron of a president has invaded another nation for the first time in the history or the United States. But I digress...

What are the arguments for capital punishment? The right wing tells us an eye for an eye and that capital punishment is the moral thing to do. Well I beg to differ. Now if the right wing was really acting with Christian morals and ethics in mind wouldn't they believe there is only one judge? We can also examine the economics of capital punishment; it costs millions of dollars of tax payer’s money to bring a "murderer" to "justice." I thought the right wing wanted lower taxes? This seems might frivolous to me if you ask me. This nation needs a slap in the face! There are still open wounds in the nation, which need to be healed before galavting on crusades against independent nations.

it is an acceptable punishment for hainous crimes.

-=-=-=- not my reason, just a note -=-=-=-
there are too many people in jails and prisons. life in prison (for murder and/or other crimes) costs too much.

Conclamo Ludus 06-28-2003 04:30 PM

I think death is too easy a punishment for some.

In reality, I dont believe in god. But, you ask who am I to judge? Who was he to judge that A SIX YEAR OLD needed to cut up into little pieces.

If there is overwellming evidence that the person killed (ie bodys in the wall and basement, on camera etc.) then put them down like a mad dog. If there is any question, life imprisonment.

Otaku 06-29-2003 06:26 PM

state sponsored murder.

The WHOLE process of our judicial system is rehabilitation, not punishment.

It may/may not work, i agree. but i feel it is a damn sight better than the idea of an eye for an eye.

Our track record for prosecuting innocent people is one of the worst in the western world...

You can have heavy punishments and still not need capital punishment.

I'm not sure if this was brodcasted much in the United States, but in Toronto last month, a little girl ( 10 years old, I believe) was walking home from a friends house, needless to say she never made it back home. In fact her body parts were found scattered between several duffle bags. The worst part of this whole story is that the &*$# that killed that innocent little girl, will likely live until he is 75 or 80 years old, even though he was caught.
Is living behind bars until 75 or 80 year olds really living? Do you think he's getting off easy?

That my friends is the justice system in Canada, I'm not proposing that the cop's begin walking around with machine guns and start shooting up people that steal a chocolate bar...but I am suggesting that those f*ckers that are convicted of these horendous crimes, do not live to see another sunset.
I agree that scum like the killer of that 10 year old girl should die. But are you absolutely sure that you got the right scum? Perhaps some new forensic technique arises in 10-20 years that irrefutably demonstrates that that killer is completely innocent. It's happened plenty of times here in the U.S.; convincted "killers" later turning out to be innocent through DNA testing, etc. Sure, 20 years of your life completely wasted is irreplacable but you can at least partially correct a mistake when you've just put him away for life in jail. That's impossible to do if you had exectuted him. The reality is that our justice systems aren't infalliable. And accordingly they should not be allowed to make irrevocable decisions such as executing someone.

Like Metallica once said...and fuck Metallica, I wouldn't steal their music to save my life:

Kill 'em all!

I'm a living, working, integral part of this structured society. If you can't play nice, fuck you. You wanna fuck with me and my family and my society? Make it hard for me to live in peace? Eat shit and die. FOR REAL.

yatzr 06-29-2003 11:45 PM

wow, i sense a lot of tension in this thread. My view:

I'm for the death penalty, but sometimes I think its letting them off too easy. They must not have had much to lose if they're out killing anyway, so what would they care if it all just ended? That's not every killer of course. For the killings that the killer actually feels guilt about, give him life....with pictures of his victim/s everywhere. I see that as a fitting punishment.

Then for the psychos that actually get off killing people, death penalty.

Overlord 06-30-2003 01:01 AM

Many people are talking about Proving that he/she is guilty. Yet the USA did not prove anything internationally before attacking Iraq.

Not to say that I don't support the war, but isn't this essentially a very large scale of the death penalty? The US does not have any cold, hard evidence to prove Iraq did something wrong yet they continued their venture anyways.

Those are just my thoughts...and I hope the US, British coalition continues to kick some major ass in Iraq. (I apologize on behalf of Western Canada that we are not part of this war, those sh!t heads in Ontario don't realize who are real friends are)

National Interests/ Real politiking is a lot different from serving justice. Collateral damage would be completely unacceptable if we were seeking justice.

We are punishing someone for murder yet murdering them...

Does the name Richard Speck sound familiar? If not, he's the serial killer who made the video of himself snorting cocaine and having sex while in prison.

Which prison was that?

I know a couple of blokes, one that did time in Long Bay Jail, the other in Goulbourn Jail, and went to uni with a screw at Junee Jail, and i can tell you, that shit doesn't happen at those places, these people do it hard.
