I know this is a bit long you guys but i really need you so please, if you've got the time, please read and reply???
Ok, so a coupla days ago, i received an email from a company called Murphy Sarawak Oil Company Ltd. Right, the email subject line was Quote:
In the email it states: Quote:
so with the filled out forms, i say i need to know what job it is i've applied for seeing as i do not remember what jobs i've applied for seeing as i've applied for so many. and i get another email: Quote:
so i send another mail saying : Quote:
Quote:
Quote:
By stroke of luck, he some how got added to my google chat contacts and i approched him: Quote:
Then this morning in another attempt to get something out of this guy: Quote:
I really need some advice. |
Sounds sketchy to me.
|
Yeah, there are some serious alarm bells going off here.
As I'm understanding it, you didn't apply for this position, they are based out of a foreign country, and they won't tell you what the job is? This whole thing really just doesn't sound on the level to me. There will be other opportunities. Put that fancy new degree of yours to use, do something you want to do, and give dodgy email applications a miss is what I say. As an aside, you may want to edit your phone number out of the original post and/or request that this be moved to Members Playground. It's generally considered a bad idea to publish information like that on the internet. EDIT - I've double-checked Murphy Oil Corps website (located at www.murphyoilcorp.com and not on 50webs, which is a free web host) and they have no postings for any jobs whatsoever in Kuala Lumpur. This is definitely not on the level. |
The company seems legit, so if you can confirm this offer with someone from the company other than Azim it seems unlikely that you'll find yourself in someone's harem. Try to find other contacts at the company and verify with them that the position exists and what it entails. I must admit, the benefits package seem too good to be true, especially the part about 1 day vacation for every 9 working days (though I hear that vacation time is a lot more generous outside the U.S.)
If you can confirm the legitimacy of the offer, I'd say your only concerns are monetary. If you can afford a flight back to S. Africa, why not try the job and see if you like it? Worst case scenario, you get a subsidized trip to Malaysia and have an interesting experience. There's no reason you can't quit later. edit: Find a phone that you can make international calls from and try the number he gave you (or any other numbers you can find.) The hassle and expense are justified, given your situation. |
mandy..

Can someone please merge the two threads? i dont know how it got here twice *shrug*
and Martian, thats not my real number...i edited it before i posted it in here :) Thanks though :) Okay, so i spoke to the guy again and he wants me to send him a copy of my passport as well as healer's passport along with a copy of the agreement letter as well as a letter of recommendation. he told me that we have to be there by the 1st week in June. what now? i'm most confused. |
I have merged the two threads.
mandy, don't do it...there is definitely something wrong here. |
Sounds like a scam to me.
I would email the HR link from the site Martian names above. This way you can confirm if this position truly does exist and if they have intended to contact you. Be careful. |
scam scam scam.
i don't know what you sent them in your first application forms, but your passport has enough information in it to start credit cards in your name, and to possibly access your current lines of credit and/or bank accounts. do not send someone you don't know a copy of your passport. they don't need it for any reason. if they want to know if you're a citizen of s. africa or if you have a valid passport, there are other ways to confirm that. once again, this is a 99.99999999999% scam. if it's not, do you really want this job with an employer who is that vague? no one will say "we don't have time for your questions, just send us your critical identification information." that should clue you in that your information is all they care about. edit: however, you should Crackify this thing. |
Mandy, if it is a fraud, how did these scammers know you where you were applying, or applying at all? At this point you should consider your emails, social-networking sites, and/or career hunter accounts hijacked.
While I personally would not go for this opportunity given how scant of detail they are willing to give you (not scant in the amount of detail that is going into this scam), I would:

Man, talk about alarm bells going off!
Listen to dlish et el. If you want to find work overseas there are several reputable agencies out there. I'd be willing to bet this isn't one of them. I'd also check out Kuala Lumpur and their record on women's rights. http://shariahfinancewatch.wordpress.../kuala-lumpur/ |
Once again I find great wisdom coming from pig. This is a scam. And you should start to mess with them.
|
if it looks like shit and it smells like shit, then I don't need to taste it to confirm it is shit. Stay away!!!!
|
This may not be a true scam (as in they may actually employ you) but it's definitely fishy. I'd stay away.
|
The first thing that tipped me off about this fraudulent exchange was the lack of grammar and spelling. If this were a legit company, you'd have better structured correspondence. They are giving you a qualified job without an interview. Their email address probably isn't the company's domain. They sure want a lot of information from you.
This is a good time to turn this around on them and see if you can get them to make fools out of themselves. |
yeah..i rekon u get the bastards good
hope u didnt give up too much information. but its definately a scam.. its time to scam the scammers. |

Nice to know I'm in the company of the smart people. :) |
Check out 419 Eater. You should be able to have some fun with this... stick to Gmail and you'll be ok, I think it hides IP addresses.
|
I agree with Hal, the terrible grammar and spelling is a dead giveaway.
Good luck job hunting still, I hope these jerks don't do anything stupid with your information. Can you warn your bank or give them a heads up that potential fraud activity might take place? |
This is a scam. Like everyone else here, I smell it. Don't get ripped off. Don't get involved.
|
Scam.
Where did you apply for this job? |

Luckily for me, i have such smart friends :D Baraka, i've applied for so many jobs that i cant even remember...i always tell myself to write it down, whatever is was that I applied for, but i never do...so i guess i'm to blame as well, you know. and thinking about it now after reading all you guys' posts about the incorrect spelling and grammar and the email addie and all that, i kinda feel a little DUH!!! :D LOL but, you live and learn and this was just another experience i can add to my belt of unfavorable learning curves :) Thank GOODNESS for you guys  HE'S ONLINE NOW!!!! I WANA GET HIM!!! Any suggestions? |

Hey Guys...check This Out
This a chat conversation i had with Azim this morning when i got to work at about half past 7 until round about 9 ... waddya guys think? Its quite long, so...
Quote:
|
Why would you continue writing to this Scammer?
Also, who in their right mind (!) would trust people who write that poorly and unprofessionally? And give them so much personal information?? Not smart. |
It is quite long, and scanning through it, I didn't pick anything out of it. I would not have had that conversation with that guy, at least not on computers not using some kind of IP bouncing scheme... but then again I am paranoid. Just because he is a fraud does not mean he doesn't know any hackers.
|
i dont see what the problem was trying to get out of him (which i think i did) what it was he was really up to???Seriously, the most information i gave him in that convo was that i stayed in Port Elizabeth and i was in my early twenties. do you know how big Port Elizabeth is? do you know how many mandy's there are in port elizabeth? in primary school alone there were four mandy's in my class. its a very common name here.
And also if those two hours prevented him from trying to scam someone else in that time, then i've done my job. Quote:
And secondly, i'm sure you have had a DUH moment at some stage in your life...i'm just glad that i could come here and get some guidance before it went further... so before you start "who in their right mind" and "not smart" think about the people like me who actually believe there is good in everyone first before judging. even if it is only by email. and please also bear in mind that he had not asked me for money just yet...i suppose he would have at a later stage but at that stage of the conversation/email correspondance, he had not. |
