How did you choose your handle?
Mine is the name of a character from the book In Watermelon Sugar. It was one of the first novels I read that I could understand beyond the basic story, and inBOIL exhibited many of the flawed characteristics that I have when I'm at my worst.
What's the meaning behind your handle?

Mine means absolutly nothing.
A few of us were stoned one day during a study period right after lunch in high school. We were making up new words and having a hell of a time doing it. This was one of the words I made up. No idea why I still remember it. Last edited by Fotzlid; 05-11-2008 at 10:12 PM.. |

My pops wanted to me Hezikiah Zachariah Herkamer Sherwood. My mom told him, "No way," and I ended up an Adam. This earned me the nicknames Herk and Hezi. Both of these have always been my handles. Also, TheHerk sometimes; like in WoW and Enemy Territory.

when I first found TFP, it was mostly a pron site (or so it seemed at the time waaay back in the fark days v.1), so I wanted my name to make me appear to be male. I didn't want to be harassed as one of the only female members on a board of hungry, horny wolves. I pondered for a long time before I came up with it and it really tickled me!!!
soon though, the mods (mostly Halx at the time) kicked the bad boys out and the TFP we know and love began to take form. Then I went through some mixed feelings about keeping the name, but it has rather grown on me. I must assume that there are quite a few people that don't know me that still think I'm a guy on this board, which is fine. It may scatter some gender bias... Great idea for a thread...I look forward to reading the rest of the posts!

I've raised sheep for ~15 years, it's a play on "user"name, and it's female. Now that I'm getting out of the sheep business though, I guess I need a new name....but I'm not very creative.

Mine is also a play on words. Obvious I believe. It's my first name and I'm a cat person (and dog, bird, fish person really, I'm an equal opportunity pet lover ). Apparently I'm not that clever based on how many times it's taken already when I sign up on sites.

Mine is a reference to Hedwig, Harry Potter's owl. I didn't want a name actually involving the name Hedwig, as at the time the movies hadn't come out yet and my thought was that some people might mistake a reference to Hedwig the owl as a reference to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and that was totally not what I was going for.

Jinn from Djinn, an Islamic concept of "evil genies" who meddle in the affairs of humans. Also a summon in the early Final Fantasy II days, was either Ifrit or Jinn depending on the translation.
Kai from randomly mashing the keyboard when Jinn was taken on an MMORPG I played at the time. It just stuck. Turns out it's a word with a lot of meanings - my favorite being a 'type of throat singing used by indigenous peoples.'

Tully Mars is a character in a couple of Jimmy Buffett's books. In "A Salty Piece of Land" Tully moves to the Yucatan having been a landlocked cowboy in the cold north. I've never been a cowboy but I have felt landlocked over the years. When I moved to the Yucatan the handle seemed fitting.

I was getting a new email because I hated with a passion what I had used all the way back when I was like 12 or 13, ultimamk, so I kept putting different names in and they were always taken. Then, I thought: what are my favorite things? I like westerns, and I like old shit, so... retro_gunslinger@yahoodotcom baby! Then, because I'm completely OCD, I used it for all of my online handles, unless it didn't fit (The Phantom on Joblo.com and SomeKindaNinja on XBox Live).

needed my 1st nick about 4 years ago and this just came to my head. it´s a reference to a simpsons episode where skinner dreams of using magnets to detain misbehaving children. the sub-nick of lom has already started to make appearances here i´ve noticed.

roachboy is a mistake.
i meant to reference kefra, the egyptian dungbeetle god who turns the ball of shit that is the world and makes time happen by doing it. i forgot kefra was a dungbeetle and substituted a cockroach for it. dungbeetleboy doesn't scan. cockroachboy is tedious roachboy i remember. everyone remembers it. i imagine because folk think who they take me to be as the kind of guy who'd wake up early after a party and go through the ashtrays looking for wake-n-bake munitions. but i don't wake up early. it's a meme

I hate Def Leppard. So, I made a handle in reference to them.... Irony? P.S. What has seven arms and sucks?

Martian has a long and complicated history. It represents an evolution of online aliases that began over a decade ago. I use it now because it's reasonably unique and usually available, and also because I feel that it represents several aspects of my character quite well (chiefly my love of astronomy and cosmology and my oft-felt impression of being an outsider in the game of life). Also, it lends itself to making a few different jokes. I like jokes.

For me - Daniel is my name (not usually Dan or Danny) and most places "Daniel" is gone, so I got into the habit of adding _ to make it allowable. Didn't even look to see if there was a plain Daniel here. I started out on several fora (many) years ago as "Wowbagger" - I felt attuned to a guy who travels space randomly insulting people in alphabetical order - it interested the rude and the OCD parts of me; but I moved on after a while. I was Lazarus for a while after I was the only person that came back to a forum after a prolonged and vicious flame-war, but that was only a joke. I find that as "Daniel_" I tend not to slip into posting as an alter-ego, so I'm more myself and more honest when I'm flying my true colours.
