Is your car on the list?

The 25 vehicles thieves love most
advertisement
Some are easier to steal, and some are easier to sell. Is your car at risk? Here are the most-stolen cars and trucks and the reasons they are targeted.

By Bankrate.com

Toyotas and Hondas dominated the list of most-stolen cars in 2002, according to a report from CCC Information Services. While overall theft losses declined 3%, that's still a total of $8 billion.

Of the top 25 most-stolen cars, 20 are Toyotas or Hondas. The Honda Accord is the single-most-stolen model, according to CCC, which analyzes losses submitted by property and casualty insurers. The most-stolen brand? Chevrolet.

Among the trends CCC reported:

* Minivans and sport-utilities continue to gain the attention of thieves, with 2002 showing a 10% increase in thefts since 2000.
* Thefts of full-sized models and muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro continue to slide, reflecting their fall-off in popularity with consumers.
* All of the domestic brands on the top 25 list are pickup trucks.

Here's the rest of the story "Stolen report"

schUsseln 06-25-2003 05:49 PM

woo hoo - go Ford Explorer!

Bet they get keyed most often though...

Meridae'n 06-25-2003 05:51 PM

Unfortunately mine's not on the list...

Why oh why will someone not take it?

ToiletDuck 06-25-2003 05:54 PM

Re: Is your car on the list?

You want yours stolen huh? Must be time for a new car?:D

TaLoN 06-25-2003 06:55 PM

it is not that they are the easiest to steal; they just happen to have easily interchangeable parts that are easy to sell off

MSD 06-25-2003 09:11 PM

Not easy to steal, easy to sell.

llack1992 06-25-2003 09:13 PM

mines not on the list. subaru. ah.

spectre 06-25-2003 09:13 PM

*whew* Didn't make the list. Doesn't mean I'll be leaving my alarm off though.

Destrox 06-25-2003 09:14 PM

Any car is easy to steal, and i mean any.

I worked for a towing business for about 5 years, the tools and books you can get legally from that is just amazing.

Step by step instructions on how to get into the latest vehicles.

bypassing ignitions is just another thing you can learn from dealerships and garages.

YourNeverThere 06-25-2003 09:14 PM

yes Dodge caravan, i win !!

florentina1614 06-25-2003 09:17 PM

i don't think many people want to steal my plymouth neon.:p

JStrider 06-25-2003 09:22 PM

Scarlet119 06-25-2003 09:25 PM

mine's not on the list either!!! yay or nay :|

boredjerk 06-25-2003 09:53 PM

My car doesn't take a key. Don't tell anybody.

McPimpenheimer 06-25-2003 10:07 PM

'89 Camaro, sliding off the list. Whoo! At least my car looks better than most of the crap on the road.

BadForm 06-25-2003 10:10 PM

How meaningful is this list? The most stolen models are also the most popular models (camry and accord).

versnatch 06-25-2003 10:18 PM

nope, but thats good to know

bermuDa 06-25-2003 10:34 PM

and 1989 mercury tracer falls somewhere between five and ten thousandth place >:]

Mr-KLipp 06-25-2003 11:45 PM

My car was once stolen and left a block down the road. I felt vaguely insulted. =)

ducati999 06-25-2003 11:51 PM

nope mine is not on the list......but those damn civic si's are always stolen...i remeber i was looking to get one and everyone i called was salvage due to theft recovery....literally every one....

Phaenx 06-26-2003 12:08 AM

I caught some mexican guy trying to switch an old battery for my new one a good while back. Chased him off and kept his battery, hahaha.

Ashton 06-26-2003 12:44 AM

Anyone trying to steal teh SS gets a load of 12 gauge 00 Buck as soon as they're clear of her Royal Metallic Blue Paint!

/don't mess with teh SS! :D

druptight 06-26-2003 02:55 AM

I wouldn't feel too bad. If anyone ever stole my car, they'd bring it right back, and leave a twenty on the seat with a note saying "You need this more than I do" :D

cheese 06-26-2003 05:31 AM

HErm i wounder if Bondagegrl has seen this thread she just got hers stolen like 3 days ago

Andric 06-26-2003 06:46 AM

They steal them to strip parts and sell the parts, not the whole car. My nissan isn't there. :)

denim 06-26-2003 07:22 AM

They tried to steal my car last month (1993 Acura Integra), but the idiots couldn't get it started for some reason.

(edit) When I went to get the radio replaced, they told me that the older Integras are stolen because they're popular with people who like to modify a cool looking car. Y'know the sort: LARGE speakers, bouncing the car, etc..

I was surprised since I look at my 10 year old car as more of a nice beater. I guess that's kinda the point.

hrdwareguy 06-26-2003 08:43 AM

Bah...I made number 11 on the list

buffto 06-26-2003 09:31 AM

i was scared when i saw that toyotas and hondas made up 20 of the top 25, but luckily, i didn't see my car, the toyota echo on there. Whew.

TwistedFate 06-26-2003 11:06 AM

Well, my MR2 isn't on the list. My Civic's more glamorous sisters are, though. I have a '95 CX the EX and DX made the list.

DaKnife 06-26-2003 11:36 AM

Whew, Yet another year that my 76 Plymouth Volare misses the list. ;)

tfin 06-26-2003 11:36 AM

HA, I feel sorry for the bastard that takes my 79 ltd. With a full hydro set up that thing rides like a wooden pickel wagon with square wheels. But I did just make it easier since I just cut the roof off.

mirevolver 06-26-2003 11:58 AM

My Neon isn't on the list. But my last car, a '93 Ford escort was broken into twice, but they didn't take it. That car wasn't worth anything.

Xios 06-26-2003 12:44 PM

I leave my windows down and my car unlocked, no one wants to steal my '97 Ford Escort...

Mad_Gecko 06-26-2003 12:52 PM

Proves only one thing, thieves have NO taste...

God, all the cars 20,000$ and less... What the fuck is the point.

I'll get worried when they get educated enough to learn the value of money :)

My car is on the list.
Hopefully mine won't be stolen. I went through that about 3 and a half years ago.

LittleOralAnnie 06-26-2003 01:36 PM

I have an alarm and my vehicle is not on the list.

Giant Hamburger 06-26-2003 01:38 PM

Nobody wants my '73 Mercedes 240 D.

I just leave the key in the ignition. It also requires a warming of the glow plugs and a pull on the choke before it will even think of starting. It looks like an exploded diagram of a car that one might use to show all the working internal parts.

It does 0-60 mph in roughly 55 seconds on a road with no incline.

I'm not sure why I would think anyone could derive any interest from this post.

/boring blah blah blah

It is all about suply and demand. If there are 100 lamborghini's in America. If one is stolen and all of a sudden there is a spare lambo engine for sale some one is going to get busted, and who is going to buy this spare engine. On the other hand there are thousands and thoushands of those top 25 cars around. If one goes missing it is less obvious. If an extra engine is now on the market that increases the number of engines out there from 10,000 to 10,001.

I would like to see numbers attached to that top 25 list, like how many of the #1 car were stolen, and so on.

clues_blues 06-27-2003 05:44 AM

I can't beleive my car is #4...I expected to see Civics on the list, but the 00 SI as #4?? That is some crazy shit! There just aren't that many of them (I thought) to make #freakin'4!! Everyone's in the US must've been ripped off ('cept mine)

/looking out the window
