I heard that one last week. That's some freaky, scary shit.
What amazes me is that co-workers are commenting that they're glad it didn't happen here (in the US), as if somehow that made us better?

Nasty story.
Could we move this thread from "FotNet" to "general discussion"? This has been running in the European press since it broke last week, and it's grim indeed. The worst of it, is that it's the second story that's come to light in the past year (the other beign the 10 y.o. girl kidnapped and held in a basement by a non-family member). The more I hear about the story the odder it gets. The man kept his daugher locked in a basement and got her pregnant six times (once with twins). Three kids were "left on the doorstep" and brought up by him and his wife. One died young and was burned in the incinerator. Three were kept in the basement and never saw light of day. His wife claims not to know anythig about it. It only came to light when he brought the eldest child out of the basement for medical attention. This was his eldest grand/daughter. It's not been announced what was wring with her, but some of the rumours I hear was that it was maybe that he'd got her pregnant too, and she was not doing well. If true (and it is wild speculation) this would mean that he was father, grandfather, and great grandfather to the foetus. Apparently Police are investigating the disappearance of a young woman nearby to his other property several years ago also.

Heard about this a few days ago, it's horrible. I still don't get how his wife never found out about it until now. I mean, how could he have kept something that big a secret for so long..?

That is absolutely frightening to know that there is people that messed up in the world.
I sure hope that the kids are going to be okay, they are still so young, and yet would be so traumatized. Not to mention that there grandfather is also their father. This is really a scary story. |

There is absolutely no way the wife didn't know.
How would you not notice the giant security door where your basement door used to be? In every house I have been in you can hear the toilet flush from anywhere in the house. What about the screams of a woman giving birth, let alone yelling for help? Who would let their spouse install a lock on the basement door, and then inexplicably spend long hours in the basement with no explanation? If she isn't involved, then she has to be one of the dumbest people ever to walk the earth.

It seems to be coming out that he ruled with an iron hand, and that she (and the lodgers they had) were strictly forbidden from entering the basement and interrupting his "work" (drafting plans for machines)..
There's a lot that can be done with physical and verbal intimidation, especially to someone who doesn't think they can get / deserve better.

This is very sad. I don't understand how the wife just didn't know? Denial can do incredible things.
Thank goodness one of the girls went to the hospital - would have taken much longer for them to catch on otherwise. How difficult must this be for the daughter who has been locked in a cellar all these years.

What a horrible situation.
All those lives ruined because of one man's twisted mind. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be born into a room, and for my whole life that room is all the world I know. Then, one day you come out into the unlimited space of the real world. Wow.

highthief - that's very interesting. Can you imagine what you think of the greater world if all you ever saw of it came through the TV? Really, the kids underground had nothing to compare anything to. Captivity is normal for them.
I don't want to know too much more, but it's hard not to pay attention to this kind of thing.

Did anyone ever read Flowers in the Attic by VC Andrews?
This is fucked. It makes me wonder about the other children Fritz and his wife produced, as well as Elisabeth's other daughters that were moved upstairs. How many of these females were raped by him???!! He must've raped and abused his wife too. How did this animal ever get so twisted?? Who fucked HIM up? Truly, this is so unbelievably horrible, I wish I never heard it.
