Planning first trip to Vegas, need advice

So I'm planning a trip to Las Vegas for my two buddy's 30th birthday next January. While I've been to the US many times (I'm from London), I've never been to Vegas and I want to make the most of it. I'm planning on staying on the strip, probably the MGM Grand, and while we're there I want to check out as many of the better casinos as possible, and a few of the clubs too. We're gonna be there for 4 days, taking in a weekend so time is limited - what do we need to see/do etc. Any advice would be appreciated

Go downtown at least once. Don't leave the tourist area. It's old Vegas, seedy and chintzy. I love it.

Wynn, Bellagio, MGM, RIO and Venetian can satisfy all of your high end needs.

I can't help with clubs or shopping.

Roller coaster at NY,NY is a blast.

It's further than the little maps make it seem from casino to casino, don't dehydrate if you walk anywhere. The monorail is pretty good. Cabs are great, last I was there you cannot hail them, they have to pick you up at cab stands.

Prostitution is NOT legal in Clark county, don't let the drug addicts handing out flyers tell you otherwise.

Watch your wallet.

Have fun!

Otherwise? Have fun.

The NYNY roller coaster got new trains, and I hear that was a slight improvement, but overall, I remember that one being a headbanging nightmare. Although the location of the NYNY is much better than Stratosphere, Circus Circus and Sahara (the other coasters/amusement in Vegas)

MGM is a nice place, we like the Monte Carlo or Luxor, they tend to be less expensive, but still decent rooms. From the MGM. you'll be able to see plenty of casinos there on the South strip. For transportation up/down the strip, you can't beat the monorail. Taxis are expensive, I avoid them unless I know I'm going to be ripping drunk upon leaving.

Downtown (Freemont St.) is maybe worth going to at night for the free street show. Otherwise, I'd stick to the strip. Downtown is definitely old school, pretty dirty and somewhat scary.

Have fun, and always bet on red.

MGM is a good choice, location-wise, because it's linked up with NYNY, which in turn links to the Excalibur, which links to the Luxor, which links to the Mandalay Bay. The monorail will get you everywhere you need to go up and down the strip.

And water is expensive in Las Vegas, and sometimes hard to find--so pack your own water bottle and fill it up with tap. Yeah, it won't taste as good, but it's much, much cheaper.

Obviously you should listen to the guy with "Coaster" in his name re: roller coasters. I honestly just use it for stress relief when the absolute MORONS in the poker games there suck out on me. Those poker games were the juiciest in town 3 and 4 years ago and very profitable but juicy means big swings, baby. Haven't been there since then though.

NEVER bet on red. NEVER bet on black. Green is RIGHT OUT. (Advice void if you find a "single zero" roulette table downtown, then go nuts following a good strategy, make sure you get your comps)

For the best bang for your buck, learn how to play BlackJack, Craps and video poker. Craps is quite possibly the most fun you can have on the casino floor.

That guy is really honest and offers every bit of knowledge for free. If you want to sign up for any of the casinos you might consider giving him your affiliate click. If you want to actually make money playing online blackjack, seek out "blackjack whoring". I won't post any more unless everyone is convinced I'm not a shill or an affiliate (I'm not, I made my money blackjack whoring and got out)

My favorite casinos:
Monte Carlo
Wynn
Palazzo
Venetian
Paris
Bellagio

I can't help you with the clubs either but all the newer casinos have at least one high end place with strict dress codes.

Freemont street at night is pretty cool but like others posted, don't wander too far from the main drag.

Wear comfortable shoes. There will be a lot of walking involved. Just walking to the next casion down the road can be a short hike. A lot of those places are hugh.

It can get a little chilly at night in January. We were just there in March and the day temps were in the 20'sC and 10'sC at night.
There should be a bunch of new buildings there by the time you go. I saw 7 active construction sites and 2 sites where the ground prep was done.

There is a lot of non-gambling stuff to do to if your liver starts to fail and you get tired of losing.
