LOUD neighbors, need help!!

I have some really trashy neighbors. I mean tra-shee. This guy keeps blasting his sh*(&^$ hip hop music. Its not just loud its ridiculously loud. Anyway, I'm pissed. I called the cops on him and his trashy girl friend and I've also called the apartment management office and they told me they couldn't do anything and that I should call the cops. I couldn't believe that! Management my ass... Anyway, the neighbors don't get the hint. I've banged on the wall, my neighbors other (good) neighbors have banged on the walls and called the cops on them too. Is there anything I can do???? I live in a good complex but got stuck with the trashiest tennants as neighbors. Anyway, I am thinking of writing a fake letter to them acting like I am the apartment management informing them that they will be kicked out if they continue with the loud music. What can I do???? (Btw they are blasting there music right now so sorry for all the show of emotion in my post....)

We had a similar problem (sitting on their patio all night and talking/laughing/yelling loudly) and we just kept calling the cops. Eventually they got the hint. It's been a couple of months now.

Yep. Find and memorize the number for the non-emergency line, and use it. Living in a college town, I've had to deal with noisy neighbors a number of times, and it's best to just let the cops handle it.

Have you tried talking to him? I mean, unless you're physically afraid of him, sometimes and actual (non-confrontational) conversation might clear things up for him. He might be an asshole (and probably is, if he hasn't gotten the hint so far), but you never know, he might see things from your point of view.

On the other hand, he might kick your ass.

I used to have neighbors like that, but instead of them being noisy it was there dog that was outside all night, every night that would bark non stop. We called bi-law after talking to them about it, that seemed to solve the problem.

So yea, just keep calling the cops. Or call Shauk over (just don't let them know he is a cuddly bear)

My father had a friend who would do that, but he would undo the muffler of the mower and deliberately keep it aimed at the offending house as much as possible.

And I had an online acquaintance who was dealing with a very loud party once. Cops even came out earlier that night, nothing was really done other than a verbal warning. Within 30 minutes, it was right back to where it was. That was when he snuck around back behind the party place and shot off a few rounds from his .357. Neighbors promptly called the cops telling them "shots fired". Within minutes, the party was shut down, the house and everyone was searched, and various peoples were arrested.

Nice Sometimes I wish I had the chutzpah to do that, just to certain people

I've always knocked on the door and asked them to tone it down. Been invited to a party or two that way, but it's always been effective.

Hmmm thanks for the feedback, although some of those things I wouldn't be able to do without spending 10 to life in prison. I appreciate it nonetheless.

The lady I talk to for the non-emergency line is kind of an asshole. I do feel kind of wussy calling the cops for a noise complaint but hey thats why I pay taxes. Or, thats why I am taking out student loans for so that when I do finally get a job I'll pay taxes.

I digress...can I get into trouble for trying out my original idea of putting a fake letter into their mailbox as if it were the apartment management sending them a warning??

Play by the rules, aka the laws, and you'll be fine.

Impersonating another person and getting caught will only have you either ignored by the cops more or kicked out by your own management that you're faking to be.

Just call the cops and let your precious ego go.

Think about it:

You put a note on their door tomorrow.

1) You get caught, they take it to management and you get possibly kicked out.
2) You get caught, they beat your ass.
3) They find it tomorrow, take it to management and anyone with .02 cents can put two and two together.. who complained? YOU. Now you're in trouble again with your land owners.
4) They find it, and ignore it.

All in all, nothing gets solved.

If they play music that loud they dont give a shit anyways. A note that is not hand delivered and talked about by the management will go nowhere.

Next time ask to speak to a supervisor if you get an officer who isn't going to help you.

It's not wussy or wimpy to call the police and make a noise complaint in this case. Go ahead and try the police again if they decide to pump the music.

What he said.

If you've bugged them and the landlord to no avail the cops are your only legitimate option. Who cares if they think you're a wuss. If they help get things quiet it's a win. I'd be calling the cops so much they'd shut down the guy next door just to get ME quiet!!!

I would go for this one.
Certainly there is a cap gun or a flare gun or something that will be loud enough, and still completely undoubtedly legal, to convince someone to call...

Firing a flare gun over dry land is unlawful discharge of a firearm in most places that prohibit such things, they pose a serious fire and injury hazard when used improperly, and I have serious issues with abusing an emergency signal for personal gain.

No kidding, so is making a false report to dispatch.

Seriously if you have a problem and don't feel it can be resolved with reasonable methods, such as talking to one another in a calm manor. Then call the police, but be honest about the situation. First and foremost there's someone in the dispatch center making what amount to as triage decisions. If you call in "shots fired" there's the serious possibility resources which might well be needed else where are going to be directed to you. And you'd better have some damn good answers as to why no one else heard shots. Second, if you call in and lie while doing so, what do you think the response is going to be when you call in and do have a serious incident? Google "boy who cried wolf" for answer.

Ummm yeah, Im not lying to the cops. I am not shooting any guns, caps or flares. Remember they are the trashy ones not me. Still considering the dump on their front porch thing though that someone above suggested...or is that trashy too? Anyway, they know its me banging on the wall. We see each other when we're both unlucky enough to go to our cars at the same time.

If it were another situation where I didn't have to see them everyday I would tel them to shut the f&*% up. But these people are my neightbors and I'm socially ept enough to know regardless of who they are, to try not to push any buttons. Similar to a classmate you have to sit next to for a semester. Since these people probably on a different frequency socially due to illegal drugs and sniffing whatever it is they can find underneath their sink. I decided not to talk to them, because once that line is open its hard to close. Anyway, they haven't blasted their music since I my original post. Now its just them fighting sporadically throughout the day...thank God.

You could call the cops to report a domestic disturbance. Bonus points if you live in an area where domestic calls must end in an arrest.

The repeated advice of calling the cops is the best. If the lady you talk to is an asshole, just call each night. She can't work everyday. When you call, do you leave your name? Even though it isn't a requirement, it adds weight to your complaint and the cops are more likely to take action then they would with an anonymous complaint. Check into your local ordinances. If they are in violation of any ordinance and the cops aren't doing anything, call and speak with the shift supervisor and work your way up if necessary. One of the few things cops hate more than noise complaints are officer complaints.

If there's abuse going on, report it. But I'll ask again, did you ever try just asking nicely for them to keep it quiet? Maybe ask them to step into your place for a few minutes with the music cranked up so they realize how loud it is?

That is actually a very good idea MSD. But these people aren't normal.

I banged on the walls and they blatantly choose to ignore it now. I actually just talked to my neighbors (good neighbors) and they said they have written letters, called the cops, called the management, and spoken to the loud neighbors themselves. Its obvious that these people are category 5 jerks. There is no other way around this but to get the law involved and by that i mean more than police officers who dont get the big picture. I mean I need to get a lawyer involved to scare the management into doing something or do what f6twister recommended and move up and get supervisors involved. I need to do some homework on city ordinances and such. I might go so far as to get signatures of all my neighbors who are pissed off by these skanks next door to me. Oh yeah, they started up with the music again so I'm back to the mattresses!
