ok, so ive survived a full day without censorship.. so im guessing im ok for now.

thanks for the reality check spindles.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. i think my appreciation of TFP jumped another level in the last day or so. and although i am in the clear at the moment, im not out of the woods by the sounds of it just yet.

what i was afraid was that they'd find certain bits of TFP to be not in the moral and social values, and block the whole site. the reason why i like this place is because everyone has an opinion and everyone differs and no one agrees on everything. its almost like..i dunno..housemates.. we all talk, agree, argue, abuse, laugh, share and live within the confines of TFP... everyones welcome to share their story...some of the ideas though may not be in accordance with what the govt thinks is right. even the thought of free thought may be a reason for the ban! who knows! this ruling is encompassing!

i tried a site now... a porn site. this is the note on the page"

"This site is not available in the uae

the internet offers us a great opportunity to communicate, share knowledge and do good.

unfortunately the website you are trying to access has content that may hurt the religious, cultural and moral sentiments of our fellow users in the UAE."

then it goes on to say if u believe this site has been blocked in error please contact the ISP.. it goes on to thank us for understanding.

geez...i will be posting a little bit later..knock on the door!

Okay that's funny... you post something about going to see a restricted porn site, then a knock on the door...

you better come back.

I can only imagine how insecure certain individuals must be in their religious beliefs that they feel it appropriate to censor anything that is not in line with them.

ok..that wasnt the government...phew

just to answer some of your queries..

halx - if i poke around too much.. is it possible to channel their attention towards me and what websites i visit? cos if thats the case, then i wont poke around too much

ratbastid - only 2ISP in the country. one is fully owned by the country, the other 40% owned by the country! go figure

MSD - i have no idea who put thse rulings in place? religious police? there is none here! this place could be mistaken for europe! and in some places is more amsterdam than amsterdam! so i dont think religous police has done this.

ill keep posting updates as they come along.

just know that if i dont come online for a while, its not cos i voluntaringly left TFP!

Isn't this the country that recently arrested and convicted a man for having marijuana on the sole of his shoe that was barely visible to the naked eye?

It is my experience that the fear of allowing others exposure to things is typically based in insecurity. I said the same thing around three years ago when Moroccan police arrested a metal band for something like "attempting to convert Muslims." You may not have religious police (at least not publicly,) but I'm quite certain that religious convictions and insecurity about others going against those convictions were the basis of this action.

glad to see your still here!

I'd be really bummed if all of a sudden I couldnt get to the tfp anymore.

are there penalties for circumventing their censorship? or is that something that is yet to be established?

I'm sure it is possible for them to see what IP address tries to hit sites that are blocked. Now going to go to the lengths of tracing an IP (or IPs in the case of a dynamic IP) to a specific person would be more involved, depends on their motivation and the cooperation of the ISP.

I'm sorry. I just couldn't avoid that awful void.

So dlish hasn't posted in two days. I wonder if Dubai lowered the hammer on TFP. Either that or he's in Yemen and doesn't have web access.

hey im still kicking!

i havent been online in UAE cos ive been travelling round Yemen and have had very limited net access. i was home for about 2 or 3 hrs in UAE, enough to pack my stuff and head off again to sydney. so i really havent checked if ive still got TFP access back in the UAE. im currently in sydney now, but im assuming things are still ok with my TFP access back in UAE (lets hope).

will keep you guys informed through some of the guys here if the axe ever falls. but if it does id assume i wouldnt last all that much longer there. we'll see

thanks for the thoughts everyone.
