Attention Sam Adams Drinkers - Recall

Evidently Samuel Adams turned up a few quality problems in some of the bottles from one of their five bottle suppliers and has initiated a voluntary recall of the affected batches. It's possible that there will be small grains of glass in the beer.

Here's the blog posting from whence the info: http://www.realbeer.com/blog/?p=788

And here's the direct link to the customer service page Boston Beer set up to handle this: http://consumerinfo.samadams.com/cidefault.htm

No one should have a bad experience with beer that doesn't involve drinking to great excess.

While I can't recommend drinking glass, they're a really small number of bottles, so if you just check the serial numbers on the cases, you should be fine. That's what I'm advocating here. Certainly not switching to Heinekin.

Killians>Sam Adams. I know that many people enjoy Sam Adams but I've never seen the appeal. I tried their multi-pack thing once & didn't like a single bottle, so I donated them to random neighbors

There's a few places in Columbus that sell beer like that. Every Blue Moon we'll go out and buy a bunch of random ones, but they're so hit-or-miss. I'll have to give it a try next time we're out.

As someone who works in the beer industry, I will guarantee that you have in the past drank small grains of glass in your beer and never noticed. It happens all the time.
A small grain of glass will be swallowed, digested and leave your body without you even noticing.
Now if they are large chunks of glass thats a different story all together. If that is the case I'm surprised that Sam Adams didn't detect the problem earlier and hold the run to be checked for quality.

And so Morpeus has brought us back to Earth.

If you're uncomfortable, check the serial numbers of the bottles. If you aren't worried, enjoy your beer.

Meanwhile, I need to check any of my newer empties before reusing. Grains of glass is one thing. Having a full bottle of homebrew explode on capping is entirely another. (I know this. It's happened. Not fun.)

I got in a car accident once and swallowed quite a few small chunks of glass. Didn't do anything to me.

As far as my beer goes, it'll take me a lot more than a few chunks of glass to make me switch to heineken! Blech!

Good thing I buy my Sam Adams in canned form.

Seriously though, if the glass is granular... the worst it could do is cut your throat a bit on the way down and allow the alcohol to seep directly into your bloodstream, much like Goldschlager. They should charge a premium for these "recalled" beers!

Damn, i just checked the remaining bottles from a sampler I bought in Colorado (I live in Utah) earlier this week. They are recalled.... I guess they are going to send me a reimbursement check but I wanted to drink the beer!

Ok so now the question is do I drink this beer anyway or toss it?

Haha, you gotta buy from Colorado (or any other close state) here in Utah if you don't want water, or to pay an arm and a leg at the liquor store!

I reiterate, it's just a little glass, and if you're real worried take Fly's advice: poor it into a glass through a sieve. No need to make another long trip.

Meh... Mine are of the series being recalled and have been quite empty since shortly after their purchase. The only complaint I have is that the SA was not the best brown ale or honey porter I've ever had. They are rinsed, look fine and will one day hold a hefe that I'm getting ready to brew.

I got a recall letter for hamburger a while back too. Couldn't send it back as it had been consumed as well. BTW, apparently Sam's Club records what you purchase from them.

I guess that's a pretty big batch they're recalling..

I don't drink much Sam Adams, but I bought this the other day:

And here is a close up of the serial number:

That's the bad batch. I doubt the practicality of a refund to Iceland.

However, to paraphrase Sideways... I am not drinking any fucking Heineken!
Except if it's free, of course.

The Sam Adams bottles I have are not from the recall lot, so I have two less. They went quite well with my medium-rare porterhouse.

But I was thinking, we don't need no stinkin' bottles. We need mini kegs:

Luckily, this place is pretty close to where I live:

You've heard of 1/4 kegs. You've heard of 1/2 kegs. Now there's a new size keg that is great news for draught beer lovers! The 1/6 keg or the 'sixtel'. This size keg is perfect for the home draught system. These kegs hold about 2 1/3 cases of beer or about 55 twelve oz. servings. Most 1/6 kegs are from craft breweries like Victory and Weyerbacher. These mini kegs are the perfect size for many uses. Most craft beer in 1/2 kegs can run well over $100 and these mini kegs make draught beer affordable and Exton Beverage stocks many different kinds of 1/6's!
Check out what's in stock below! If it's not in stock we will reorder!!!

Bold Red indicates 1/6 keg is in stock as of 9:00 AM, April 4, 2008!
Bold Blue indicates a new product that we have in stock!
Call ahead to reserve 1/6 kegs for your planned events! 610-363-7020
Regular text indicates that 1/6 keg is out of stock, but we will be happy to reorder!
Also, if you don't see something you are looking for here, contact us and we will see if we can get it!

Dude, looks like you were also our neighbor, up until we moved to Iceland a year ago. (We lived in West Chester, and ktspktsp worked in Exton.)

What, no Yuengling on the list?!

Welcome ...former neighbor...unless I consider this with a more global perspective, in which case Iceland is just past the horizon off the Jersey shore. Keep an eye out for lost Ocean City NJ lifeguards washing up on your shores using a minikeg floatation device.

Do you think this "fly" suit would get thru airline security? I could load up on Yuengling next time I fly to Iceland:

thanks for the "heads up" on butt monkey. After reading those reviews I wouldn't order that without first taking a taste.

That reminds me. Now that many bars have such a variety of beers, I'm finding it very common that the bartender will give you a little taste if you say you are not familiar with a beer. This pleasant trend makes it much less likely that you'll order some crap you don't like, plus ...it's free beer!

These kegs hold about 2 1/3 cases of beer or about 55 twelve oz. servings.
<Snip = 1 standard shitload of beers/>
Corney Kegs! Those are the kegs homebrewers use. I know from experience you can fit 4 of them plus a CO2 canister in a standard fridge. Just about the size of a standard homebrewed batch too, at 5 gallons.

Also, Black Butte, Entire Butt, and Dogfishhead Golden Shower Imperial Pilsner (They did make them change the name after it had been out a year.)

They are different from cornies in that they have regular keg couplers. Cornies are old soda kegs with ball or pin lock couplers with separate gas in and liquid out connections. However they are roughly the same size as cornies and one could easily get three or four in a kegerator made from an old fridge or two in most of the mini-fridge style store bought kegerators.

One drawback to the sixtels IMHO is price. They are a bit more expensive than half or quarter barrels. Or at least in my area they are.
