Covered By My Auto or Homeowner Ins?
We had sever winds last night. The basketball hoop in my driveway fell on the hood of my car. Who do I call, my homeowner insurance or my car insurance?
|
I'm thinking auto, but I'd get other opinions as well. I think it would fall under the Comprehensive section on your auto plan.

It might be both, but since there's probably more damage to the car, call your auto carrier. If the winds damaged the hoop and anything else, call your homeowners carrier. They might try to subrogate to each other, but that shouldn't affect you at all.
As a rule of thumb, call the one who insures the damaged item. And Redjake's right about where the coverage is in your policy. |
do they raise your rates if you file a claim on your home-owners insurance?
because you know they will on your car ins. |
It's not an insurable claim under homeowners, especially since there are different carriers. You can't pick which one is going to cover this kind of incident. The homeowners form says that it doesn't cover any autos, period. So if you house burns down with your car inside it, your homeowners isn't going to pay for the car.

It's your car insurance because your home wasn't damaged - unless the hoop damage to your house cuased more damage than your deductable. And I haven't seen a hoop that nice!!!!

Well, it is my car insurance. I only have a $50 deductible. I haven't had an estimate for the damage yet. No one can tell me if my rates will go up. I have to speak with an underwriter. I'll write back with the results. I'll be pissed if my rates increase. I haven't had a ticket or a claim in the over 10 years I'm with them.

Hope it all works out for you. I think that if they raise your auto rates for this that would be total BS. This was completely out of your hand, and for them to raise rates due to this, lets just say I would be less than impressed.
Hope it all works out for you. |
That's what I was thinking. sounds like a comp claim on your auto policy. IMO your rates shouldn't increase. Not exactly a moving vehicle claim. Most insurance companies should handle it like a rock peck in your windshield. That is assuming you have comp coverage.
