For those of us who love the moon

It's that time of year! Lunar Eclipse

Local weather says snow showers, but I'm hoping not and will be out there with the tripod set up.

Fotzlid 02-18-2008 10:15 PM

ooh...i'm actually off that night.
thanks

kurty[B] 02-19-2008 07:52 AM

I'm grabbing a head lamp and my snowshoes and am going to snowshoe to some hotsprings, and hope that it is not cloudy/snowy like it is supposed to be.

Should be a good night.

xepherys 02-19-2008 07:55 AM

Awww, I thought this was going to be a thread about the Spongmonkeys Moon Song. *sigh*

BadNick 02-19-2008 08:02 AM

I'm hoping for clear skies. It's not looking too promising as of today, but I'm out doing the secret Hopi rain dance backwards in hopes the clouds will go away.

ring 02-19-2008 08:10 AM

Even if the sky is obscured that night,
I shall still howl.

jewels 02-19-2008 11:17 AM

Woohoo! I'm off tomorrow for some medical appointments so I can stay up to watch it :D

Hain 02-19-2008 01:47 PM

I am going to be on an airplane...

allaboutmusic 02-19-2008 02:59 PM

Thanks for the heads up - I love these. The solar eclipse in 2006 was amazing.

PonyPotato 02-19-2008 03:10 PM

If it's not as cold here as it is today (brr!), I'll be trying to find a spot where I can see it comfortably. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks, I needed that.

Yeah, I'll be watching the eclipse. The Moon, Sun and Stars are big things down here in Mayaland. Think I'll drive out to a deserted section of beach and get away from all other light sources. Wish my good camera was working.

secretgem 02-19-2008 04:21 PM

Thanks for the heads up. However I think I"ll miss it. I'm going to tell my daughter though and see if she can catch it.

Baraka_Guru 02-19-2008 07:39 PM

Damn, I thought this was going to be TFP Wiccans. :)

Well, I guess a lunar eclipse is a good start.

I hope I get to see it.

MSD 02-19-2008 08:24 PM

Hmm, early enough that I should be able to get some pictures of the first half at school without leaving early.

Sweetpea 02-19-2008 08:27 PM

verrryyy cool. thanks for sharing dawg!

blahblah454 02-19-2008 09:59 PM

Sweetpea!!! Where on earth have you been?

And the moon is sweet, I hope to check this baby out tomorrow.

PonyPotato 02-20-2008 05:49 PM

I can see the moon from my desk! Hell yes!

The bottom edge is barely starting to be obscured. How exciting! :)

Elphaba 02-20-2008 06:39 PM

I can see the diminishing moon between the trees on my deck. Hopefully, the other side of the eclipse will be above the trees. The skies are perfect here for watching. :)

ngdawg 02-20-2008 06:42 PM

I'm snapping away....there are two tiny stars around it too, but I don't think they'll show up.

Tully Mars 02-20-2008 06:51 PM

Yeah it looks awesome! Too bad my decent camera isn't decent anymore. My old Powershot just does cut it for night photo's:

It does fine on sunrises

OMG ... How beautiful!!! I just came in from outside and it's so beautiful. It's a PERFECT night! Clear sky full of stars nothing in the way of the moon. It's gorgeous.

ratbastid 02-20-2008 07:15 PM

Just stepped outside and saw it between clouds.... then dragged two girls outside to see it. Very cool!

secretgem 02-20-2008 07:26 PM

I've never witnessed a lunar eclipse before. I think it's amazing! Wow! :surprised:

so cool...

secretgem 02-20-2008 07:31 PM

Excellent Pictures! My daughter is outside trying to get some shots as well. Thanks for sharing!!!

ngdawg 02-20-2008 07:41 PM

I'm glad I got the star. Seeing them around the moon is almost as cool as the eclipse itself.

Apparently, from what I read in the link, that is not a star, it's Saturn. Pretty cool!

Yes! Have you ever seen it through a telescope (saturn) ... it is the cooles thing. You can really see its rings!

ngdawg 02-20-2008 07:56 PM

No, I don't have a telescope :(
Wish I did, I'd be outside every full moon just staring at it.

roachboy 02-20-2008 08:09 PM

i was outside for quite a while looking at the huge burnt orange balloon in the sky. it was lovely. so were the stars. sometimes, i'm really glad to not be in a city---this is the first time in about 15 years....

secretgem 02-20-2008 08:33 PM

For those who didn't get an opportunity to see it a friend of mine shared this link with me ... http://www.answers.com/topic/lunar-e...cat=technology

BadNick 02-20-2008 08:37 PM

It was awesome. Our skies cleared up after a late afternoon flurry so we had a great view. It was cold out but I think we got a bit warmed by the mystical event. ...well, it's not really a mystery, but seems mystical anyway.

Looking at the moon is fun at any time, but my favorite is looking at a thin crescent moon, since the terminator, which is the border between the lit and dark moon parts of the moon, allow you to see shadows on the sides of one mountain or crater while the other side is lit up. It gives you a more 3-D effect than just looking at the bright full moon.

I love looking with my telescope, but even a half decent pair of binoculars is great ...not to mention, when scanning the sky with a binocular you will find all sorts of very cool star clusters and nebulae ...if you do a little research as to what you can find before you go looking.

Hey, this question crossed my mind so I looked it up and I think it's interesting. The surface temp of the moon changes from about 107C to 123C when fully lit, down to about -153C when in the dark.

Enigma - Total Eclipse of the Moon ...weren't there others who also had a song/performance by that name?

Elphaba 02-20-2008 09:29 PM

I agree with BadNick that gazing upon the moon at any time is worthwhile. Luna was special tonight. :)

medlar 02-20-2008 09:33 PM

A clear night, and they said it would rain..it was awesome absolutely stunning. I've never seen one before..Saw it on my way home from work. I took a picture from my phone but lol, just a white blot on black. Great pictures ngdawg. They say the next lunar eclipse will be in 2010.

allaboutmusic 02-21-2008 12:59 AM

I read that the next full lunar eclipse will be in 2016. Fortunately we have the solar eclipse coming up in August to look forward to.

ShaniFaye 02-21-2008 04:06 AM

The next total lunar eclipse is in 2010, on Dave's bday...that should be cool

thanks for the pics dawg!!!

Ustwo 02-21-2008 08:35 AM

Interestingly to me, is that for some reason I wasn't too excited about the whole thing.

Its interesting to me since I'm such an astronomy buff but what you can see with the naked eye just seems so mundane.

I looked out a bit when it was about about 1/4th, saw it at totality, and then, meh.

I'd have spent more time outside had it been warmer out, but it was quite cold and I wasn't motivated enough.

kurty[B] 02-21-2008 08:44 AM

Gorgeous night! We saw the complete lunar eclipse and then the clouds came in and covered the sky. Still a great night. Did not make it to the hot springs. Stumbled upon a herd of resting elk in a creek bed and decided to turn around and head back to the car rather than wander around them and possibly startle them. I'm going to plan more night hikes on full moon nights.

MSD 02-21-2008 09:05 AM

I tried to get a few pictures, but the school camera just wouldn't cooperate. The fucking thing thinks it's smarter than me; no shit there isn't enough light to meter properly, it's a full lunar eclipse! Even set on a 5.0 aperture (because for some reason it decided it didn't want to go down to 2.8) and 25 second exposure, it wouldn't take the picture when I pressed the button. I would have taken a few with my camera, but the low-light sensitivity isn't good enough, which is why I was trying the SLR in the first place.

I fucking hate technology.

The 10°F weather didn't motivate any of us here to stay out for long, but at least we got to see Saturn. This is the first eclipse in my area with clear weather when I'm old enough to really enjoy it. Hopefully it will be a little warmer next time.
