Do women tip considerably less where you work?
Host’s (or Hoe’s as Silent Jay like to call him) thread made me ponder…
I work in the Toronto bar service industry. While not a rule it’s certainly the standard that women will tip considerably less than men. It’s hard to say the exact number but I’ll offer as much as 50% less than men. With the main factors being that most of those that tip less leave no tip at all and it being VERY rare (about 1/100) for women to give a gratuitous tip of 25% or more. The one saving grace is that allot of women have worked in the serving industry at one point or another and this has educated them on the significance of tipping. A common trend is rewarding me with flirtation rather than money for my services. Something I’ve learned to avoid and circumvent but it’s still frustrating that I had to do so. The social and sexual value implications of this are rather disturbing to me. I’ve learned to live with this and come up with many strategies to keep my income at good level while providing great service to all of my clients. However, I love entertaining girls and wish that I didn’t have to depend on the men they are with to reward my services. There anywhere in the world where this might be possible? |

I am female. I live in a rural area in the South. My standard tip for servers is 20%. I go up or down from that amount depending on the courtesy, competency and consistency of the server. And I always tip extra to a server that goes the extra mile to make my dining experience a good one. It is my norm during the Christmas season to hand a hardworking server an extra $10 or $20 just because...

As a waiter it's well known women tip less. It's not just a stereotype, though there are few exceptions.

I tip about 18-20%(here in NJ it works out to about 3 times the sales tax or double the first digit of the bill) and whether it's with my friend or spouse, they both think it's too much, altho my friend is a bit more liberal.
I worked in a (slightly) upscale restaurant two years and, at least during lunch, the women were really cheapskates with tips but the worst of all....old people. 10% maybe and if they showed up with a BOGO coupon from those Entertainment books, they'd tip on only the meal they paid for, even though the coupon states "Please tip your server based on the bill amount before your deduction." |

Women always tipped me more but expected to be able to put it in my waist band.
The nerve of some people, I'm not just a piece of handsome meat, I have feelings too. Just once I wish they would have looked me in the eyes instead of my magnificent package.

You only say that because you think it's expected of you. Re: the topic, it seems to me that we could skip the umpteen threads and just decide now that every gender/race/nationality/ethnic group tips worse than every other gender/race/nationality/ethnic group.

I tip between 15-20%, depending on service and where I am. In cities and finer restaurants, I tip more, because generally the waitstaff does more. If I have an alcoholic beverage I add a dollar per drink to the tip. If I'm just drinking and not eating, I tip a dollar a drink.
And if I can't afford to tip nicely--I stay home.

I usually tip 15-20%, less if the service is weak. One chinese restaurant I used to frequent had very friendly and helpful waiters, I would tip $4-5 for a bill that usually came to around $20, and they often gave me free appetizers, free beer (even when I was 16), and free dessert, and I would leave a tip of $10-15 usually.
I never tip based on the gender/age of the person receiving the tip. I am male. |

I tipped 26% at dinner tonight. I usually start at 20% and adjust according to quality of service. Xepherys is a lousy tipper.

My girl is an example of this. She is not continental american. I tip at about 20% for meal, somewhere between 20 and 30 % for bars/drinks.
She tips about 10% max, and might tip less if she can.

We tip at least 20%. If it's just me, I'd have to spend $20-25 on food/drinks for one person in order for 20-25% to equal at least a $5 tip for my server. I figure I take up the same time and table space even when I am alone, and decided to always tip a $5 minimum, no matter what I spend.
I also tip the guys who fill my gas tank, giving them a bag of M&M's. If another car pulls into the gas station by my house at the same time that I do, my car gets filled first (I withheld M&M's once when they made me wait). The other day when we paid for our gas, I dropped a bag of M&M's on the counter. My husband explained to the cashier, "my wife says she always buys candy for the guys who fill her tank." The guy smiled, nodded, and said, "yea...we know."

Lady Sage usually will help me decide how much we leave. Most of the time she agrees with me. If we have a $25.34 check for example, I'll pay $4.65 then usually give a couple 1's also. Depends, I very rarely carry any cash so LS will leave the bills.
I have been known to be a very generous tipper making the above $35 if I feel service was outstanding.... which I'm easily impressed. I guess that's why we don't go out as much anymore. From these 2 threads it has dawned on me how greedy some waitstaff is though. Some of you expect everyone to tip generously (15-20% to me is generous), yet, you never think that the people may not have it. Perhaps they just have enough to eat on and the tip isn't going to be that great. What you want to tell people they can't come into your establishment unless they can afford to tip also? These threads have really opened my eyes to tipping and not in a positive way.
