I looked into it a bit and it seems that insurance companies can only check credit in some states. The laws are done on a state by state basis. My state must have recently changed because my insurance company sent me a letter to let me know they were checking my credit. I called them and they assured me it wouldn't affect my credit. After they did the scan I applied for a mortgage with a broker who is also my friend and he was nice enough to give me the entire credit report (the one that the insurance companies don't want you to see). Needless to say there was lots of interesting information on that report but there was no decrease because of the insurance check. Also a few months ago I checked my credit with some online free credit check service and it listed the insurance credit checks under the area of "checks that do not affect credit".

well i went back to USAA and they assured me that they didnt run my credit and if they did, it wouldnt affect me.
I am paying about $120/mo. same coverage, same everything, and Geico is not charging me any penalties. so I feel odd changing back and forth, but if it saves me money, oh well right? |
