Weird hair issue

On the top of my head, near the back, where the hair switches between the side and back hair, I have a strange problem. The left area seems to poof up a lot (not frizzy, just stick up). I don't know if it's because of a scar or not, but I've had it as far back as I can remember. Does anybody else have this too, or is it just me? I hope you guys can picture exactly what locations (one for left, one for right) on my head I am referring to.

i think what you're talking about is a cowlick and lots of people have those.

Willravel 01-05-2008 11:00 PM

I can't even tell you how normal that is. Hair patterns are usually sporadic at best. Embrace it. I've found that my hair looks best when I just let it do it's thing and get a good cut every 3 weeks.

If you want to fix it, it's in your nighttime routines.
1) Bathe before bed, shampoo and condition
2) Put a finishing cream in your hair
3) Set your alarm to 15 minutes before you have to wake up and sleep on that hair until you have to wake up

Bam. Flat.

Cowlick sounds about right, though I previously thought that only referred to a section in the front of the head. Anyway, it's not a big deal. I'm sure it could be weighed down with a heavy cream/mousse/whatev.

hey, wish I had your problem. My hair is pretty much dead at the age of 28. LOTS of grey hair, my hair had been described to me as "african" hair.

yes, I am the white man who could grow an afro, many strands of hair coming out of the same pore, super thick, but dead. Completely immune to hairspray.

It just is unmanageable I think, that or no one on my family knows anything about dealing with this kind of hair (possible cuz no one else has hair like this in my family)

so strange.

I have the same thing but it's only really noticeable when my hair is short. The longer it gets the more gravity is on my side pulling it back down, hehe.

It's extremely common, like willravel said. I also like his suggestions, although I would like to add 4) shave your head a la Britney to the list.

I have two cowlicks on the back of my head. Like antlers. They're ultra-annoying. Either I shave my head or have to grow my hair out.

I'm in the process of growing it out again.

...

I mitigate my man-horns by keeping my hair "fluffy" from a good shampoo and conditioner and by keeping the top kinda mess so it blends in better.

Shauk: do you know what's causing it or do you think it's just genetic? I mean, nobody else in your family has it and it sounds pretty unusual the way you describe it. I know gray hair comes out wiry, and usually if you get so much gray hair at an early age then someone else in your family experienced the same thing. I have some gray hair at this young age, but it's not that bad. I actually kind of like it.

I have the same thing, horribly, and usually have no choice but to either keep my hair short, or let the rest grow out some and cut the cowlick down shorter.

Cyborg Ninja 01-06-2008 03:22 PM

Well I'm not about to give myself a buzz-cut, so I think you can deal with long hair, too. Don't let yourself become a slave to your cowlick!

Shauk 01-06-2008 04:41 PM

`I have no idea what's causing it actually. I think the way it grows is just genetic but it's so thick that it makes my head pretty... greasy? if I don't keep it short. It's almost impossible to wash my hair if I let it grow out cuz I can't even get down to the scalp. I dunno just imagine each fiber of your hair with its own water proof vasoline like coating and there ya go. I can wash 2 times a day and it still just feels like I stuck my hand in a 2 hour old cold pan of dried up hamburger grease.

I just save myself the guess work and keep the hair super short.

hey guys, any1 of u know how do i make my hair grow faster?

MSD 01-08-2008 06:28 AM

petre, hair growing speed is genetic. It took me almost five years to get to where I am today, and trust me, there's nothing you can do to speed it up. Make sure you keep your scalp healthy, it's all you can do to make sure your hair grows to its maximum potential.

You need salicylic acid shampoo like Neutrogena T-Sal to dry up the oil glands. If that doesn't work, you can try T-Gel, but the coal tar extract has a fairly strong smell. If I don't wash my hair daily, it looks like I dipped it in a pot of grease and feels disgusting, so I know the feeling. Even if I didn't sweat, if I'm going out at night I take another shower in the evening so I look clean.
