If you were given 20.000 dollars right now....

or Euros for that matter, and you had to spend it in say a couple of hours at most, what stuff would you buy?

Let's assume going to market etc is not a problem, and you could order online.

ME:
A Nikon prosumer camera.
19" LCD Monitor!:D
New graphics card.
An R6?!

What about you?

phunktastic 04-21-2003 05:04 AM

A nice new laptop and a decent car. I'd have about 17 grand left over.. I wonder how much those hybrid cars are

BoCo 04-21-2003 05:11 AM

Since it has to be spent right away:

I'd get a Sony LCD projection TV ($4,000), a Litespeed road bike (~$5,000), some new 17" wheels/tires for my car ($2,000), some new speakers for my livingroom ($3,000) and the rest would be spent in a mad rush through the mall.

frenik 04-21-2003 05:12 AM

I'd buy $20,000 in gold, and slowly sell it to pay for college. Technically, I spent it in a few hours, right? :D

If that's ruled cheating, then I'd buy a car, a computer or two, and use the rest to stock my freezer with a few month's worth of frozen pizzas.

Peetster 04-21-2003 05:31 AM

Put it all into the US Stock Market. It's poised to rally.

Bob Biter 04-21-2003 05:37 AM

I'd by a van, some traveler's cheques and go on the mother of all road trips.

troit 04-21-2003 05:38 AM

20 grand huh?

I hate to be so plain but I would use it to put toward the purchase of a house since that is a fairly good chunk of change and therefore requires longer to accumulate.

Ganguro 04-21-2003 05:45 AM

Good question.. If I couldnt give it away I would buy a new computer, a car, or be the clotheshorse I was born to be! Can we say fashion plate of questionable sexuality? Call me what you want.. but when im waking up to a bevy of Aligator skin suits
.. we all know who the real winner is :)

Empty_One 04-21-2003 05:53 AM

well, I'd have it spent pretty damn quick. A new HDTv with a plasma screen that I was looking at costs around 12,000, then a quick trip over to the computer store to pick up a new top of the line laptop and desktop, and I'll probably have to fish in my wallet to cover the difference.

sapiens 04-21-2003 06:05 AM

I'd pay off my student loans. (If I could do it in that short of time.). If it had to be totally frivolous, I would put it toward a new computer, a vacation on some tropical isle, or Subaru WRX.

bundy 04-21-2003 06:06 AM

$20,000 would immediately mean a motorbike. a cool motorbike.
oh, then i'd pay off my dirty credit card debt.

End User 04-21-2003 06:08 AM

I'd probably buy myself a nice lunch, then go over to paypal and donate the rest of it to Hal to ensure this awesome community never goes offline again!

CSflim 04-21-2003 06:47 AM

hmmmmm.... maybe....some rope. Yeah some rope. I reallly like rope. A nice long bit.

Somenosuke 04-21-2003 07:01 AM

What would happen if we DIDN'T spend it in a few hours? I'd probably horde it between my mattresses or in some super secret spot nobody could ever in a million years find (except me).

I'd probably move out, get a cheap apartment, and live off it for a little b..oh who am I kidding? That money would get used up on my schooling. :P

boatguy234 04-21-2003 07:06 AM

00

Cynthetiq 04-21-2003 07:17 AM

I'd be paying for all the renovations for the new apartment the wife and I just bought in the lower east side. :)

fienna 04-21-2003 07:36 AM

20,000 huh? i'd have to buy that car, or at least put a nice down payment on it... hey, those new 3 series BMW's are nice, and 20 grand could push the financing payments down to less then 100 a month, which would be sweet!

shalafi 04-21-2003 07:37 AM

ooohhh i could pay off my truck, finally get my bike running again, and probably a downpayment on the new bike i could afford if i didnt have my truck payments

yournamehere 04-21-2003 07:39 AM

Send it off the the mortgage company with the notation "Apply to principal only."

zf0enix 04-21-2003 07:41 AM

I'd use half of it as a down on a fixer-upper and the rest in the market to use as collateral to fix up the fixer-upper.

Or, hookers and beer and maybe a little weed.

zf0enix 04-21-2003 07:43 AM

While we're talking about being given money, my wife and I were just "gifted" about that much money. So this is a like a practice run for me!

degrawj 04-21-2003 08:45 AM

i would pay off my student loans, which are around 18,000 bucks. the rest i would spend on CD's, if i HAD to spend the money. i would rather save it though.

snowy 04-21-2003 08:48 AM

I'd prolly pay my parents back for money I've borrowed, and then spend the rest on a trip to Europe. :D If I had money left over, I'd save it for spending money for next school year. :)

Junchbailey 04-21-2003 08:55 AM

I'd pay off all my debts, which would leave me only about 3000 more to pay off.

Grondar 04-21-2003 09:01 AM

Given my current situation, I would certainly buy a car.

Assuming we had to spend it all and couldn't invest/save it, I would probably spend as much as I could on a car without topping $20,000.

sandeep 04-21-2003 09:07 AM

I'd get that ipod that i've been dying to get for a good year or so now.

Then i guess i'd lose myself in the closest HMV.
knowing me i'd probably spend too much and end up with a bigger credit card debt then i walked in with ;)

NoCure 04-21-2003 09:12 AM

Pay off College Loans, and get car fixed

onodrim 04-21-2003 09:18 AM

While there are dozens of things I would like to buy, I would put it in the bank and save it towards paying off college, no question. I guess thats what I get for deciding to go to a 30,000 a year school :p

zizdog69 04-21-2003 09:21 AM

Looks like a great wish list!!

I would definatly pay off my car and credit cards. I would have about $5000 left so I would get two awesome laptops, one for me and one for my woman (she has always wanted a laptop).

hotzot 04-21-2003 09:38 AM

pay of the bills

hotzot 04-21-2003 09:38 AM

pay off! the bills, my spelling SUX

ARTelevision 04-21-2003 09:40 AM

redo the home LAN, should be able to do it for that much.
Then put the old stuff to extra use, backup duty, etc.

SaltPork 04-21-2003 09:47 AM

A nice new computer and the rest I would put toward a car.

Daval 04-21-2003 09:49 AM

1. Pay back my parents for the loan I have with them - that frees up $250/month

2. Pay off both of my credit cards and then chop them up with scissors - frees up another $250/month

3. Pay off my barbecue financing - frees up $60/month

4. $7500 CDN for two vacations - one this year, one next.

5. Any leftover money goes into RRSP's

With the money that I am freeing up every month would go into savings and mutual funds.

sixate 04-21-2003 10:11 AM

Pay a few things off and save the rest.

Quadraton 04-21-2003 11:04 AM

I'd dive into the local Future Shop/Electronics Boutique, and pass out from all the excitement.

teflonian 04-21-2003 11:09 AM

pay off the car, buy a new computer with two LCD monitors, buy a couple hundred cds and books, buy my girlfriend some diamonds (even though I think they are the worst example of commercialism and consumerism).

Phaenx 04-21-2003 11:10 AM

20.000? Blockbuster, food, driving range.

20,000, investments. I don't know which ones.

arael 04-21-2003 11:13 AM

20,000 dollars... prob invest most of it and buy an I-pod for myself... nothing else i really want or need

phoenix1002 04-21-2003 11:25 AM

Hmm... probably would really spend it on college. But hey, since its not going to happen, I'd spend it on a slightly used car, a new computer, and plane tickets and supplies so I could backpack across Europe.

Car $10-15k approx
Computer $2k
New backpack, tent, food, tickets, etc... whatever's left over.
